Editor’s Note
Dear Readers,
The summer is almost over and the next few months we will be covering a lot of
charity causes and elections.
This month we hope you will enjoy the person story I decided to share with
you all about the trip to Chicago I made at the beginning of the summer. I went to
cover several stories in the area, but the DIG WARS story is my favorite.
As always we ask for any information, feedback and or suggestions. We are
always looking for writers and photographers.
We also ask that you pick up the special edition of the Aug 2015 issue that will
be all about the JB Kustoms Low Rider Car Show Culture & Art. This production
is something that The Show Scene Magazine and Trendkill Media worked closely
on with Joe Ruiz. We hope you will enjoy both editions of the magazine.
Sincerely,
Lucy Bocanegra

On July 26, 2015 Joe Ruiz, local business owner
of JB Kustoms (resident of Richardson,Texas), set
an example to Fair Park officials. The "dream car"
is as diversified as the State of Texas.
Most Texans visit the State Fair of Texas in the
fall with two things on their minds, fried foods and
automobiles, but in July it is visited for a whole
other type of dream car.

CAST
STILL ON THE DIG
by Lucy Bocanegra

Earlier this year, in February, I
recieved a strange text from a number
with an area code to a Chicago suburb.
The text seemed like an April Fools joke.
Nearly 3 years ago in June of 2012,
my daughter, the artistic director of the
magazine, lost her class ring.
We visited Lake Michigan in Chicago
while covering an event at Elgin, Illinois.
Luzette stood knee deep in the water as
she tossed a football back and forth with
her Dad. In one of the tosses, the class
ring was pushed off and lost for what
we assumed was forever. I was upset,
because her ring was custom made. It
was not like most class rings. She did
not have much identifying factors on
it and then instead of her high school
name being on top of it, she decided to
use her Grandfather’s last name on the
outside and her maternal grandfather’s
name on the inside along with her
company name, Trendkill, on the side.
When Mark Slinkman -- a cast
member from Travel Channel’s “Dig

12

Wars” -- found it, he was stuck, “It was
one of those rings where you run into
a lot of roadblocks. It was difficult to
return, not giving up, a few months ago
I enlisted the help of Andrew to see if he
could do anything with it.” He did and
he found Trendkill Photography’s page
by putting in my last name, which is
linked to The Show Scene Magazine.
Long story short the text message
read, “Did you lose a ring at the beach
in Chicago.” I responded with sarcasm
and said, “Ok is this Cousin Gil or
Cousin Lou?” The next message told
me that a ring was found and asked me
to indentify the markings on it. I still
felt it was a joke and I said, “It has a
hot dog!” Funny thing is that “Portillo”,
which is on the ring, is a tourist must
stop known for their hotdogs.
Luckily Andrew, the tracker, did
not give up. He asked for another
identifying mark and I said, “Inside it
has Bocanegra.” The next message
nearly dropped me to the floor. Years
had passed and we never thought the
ring would surface. “We have your ring.”
and it was accompanied with a picture.
It was Luzette’s ring!
In June of this year, we went to
retrieve it and to my surprise we
met Mark Slinkman at his home. As
promised, he did not ask for reward
money. He returned it and asked for
permission to take a picture of the
return and to allow him to report it on

the newsletter for the Midwest Historical
Society and in the website Treasure
Depot. Any rewards given go to the
metal detecting clubs children’s burn
camp. It’s sponsored by the Chicago
Fire Department.
Mark’s first appearance was in a
new television program entitled “Dig
Wars” on the Travel Channel. The first
show featured Fort Phantom Hill in an
episode that aired nationwide for the
first time on July 10, 2013. (Ironically
the fort is in Abilene, Texas; where
Luzette spends her summers. It is her
Portillo grandfather’s home town.) The
reality television program featured three
teams of experienced “artifact diggers”
who searched different historic sites
across the U.S., competing for bragging
rights about who found the best buried
treasures. The artifacts are now on
display at The Frontier Texas Museum
in Abilene, Texas.

Words can’t explain the gratitude we
have that there is still honest people
doing good deeds in life.

Governor Abbott Discusses
Border Security
Associated Press

With elections coming up soon, There will be all kinds of talks
about the border and securing it. Supporters of candidates and
opponents will make the coming elections interesting. It will be a
show to watch!
Governor Greg Abbott spoke with FOX News radio host Sean
Hannity today to discuss how Texas is stepping up to secure our
border in the wake of federal government inaction by signing into

law the most comprehensive border security plan in the nation.
Texas’ border security plan will invest $800 million in state funds
to increase the number of Department of Public Safety troopers,
aircraft, surveillance cameras, technology, and training equipment
in order to bolster security along the Texas-Mexico border.
“Texas took matters into its own hands. We passed our own plan
to secure our border, doing what the federal government has failed
to do,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas is stepping up and securing
the border because Republicans and Democrats in Washington,
D.C. are not taking care of a constitutional responsibility to
protect the sovereignty of the the United States of America.”
