Design a deck type, welded plate girder of a Railway bridge for single track B.G. main line loading, for the following data: Effective span = 24 m EUDL for BM= 2034kN EUDL for SF = 2231 kN Impact factor = 0.417 Traction force = 448 kN Braking force = 416 kN Raking force = 6000 N/m Draw to the scale: a) Cross section of plate girder b) Longitudinal elevation.

Part – B (Marks: 48) Answer any three of the following 1.a) What are the advantages of welded connections? Explain the following for fillet weld considering I.S. specifications? i) Size of weld ii) Throat thickness iii) Length of weld. With neat sketches, explain different types of welds? A simply supported beam of effective span 12m carries a uniformly distributed load of 40 kN/m. Taking Fy 250N/mm2 and E=2x105 N/mm2, design the beam if it is laterally supported? Draw the details of beam? With near sketches, explain different types of tension members. A tie member in a roof truss, 1.75m long and carries an axial load of 120 kN. Design a suitable single unequal angled section if fillet weld is used for the joint.

A built-up steel column comprising two ISWB 400 Rolled Steel Joists sections with their webs spaced at 325 mm and connected by 10 mm thick battens, transmits an axial load of 2000 kN. Safe bearing capacity soil at site = 300 kN/m2. The safe permissible stress on the concrete bed = 4 N/mm2. Design a suitable foundation for the column adopting a slab base, and draw to scale a) Side view of the gusseted base b) Plan view of the foundation. A plate girder having an effective span 12.20m is required to carry a uniformly distributed load of 90kN/m inclusive of its own weight, ends being simply supported. Part – B (Marks : 48) Answer any three of the following 1.a) b) Explain the defects in welding. A tie bar 120$\times$10mm is to be connected to the other tiebar of size 120mm x 14mm. The tie bars are to be loaded by a pull of 120kN. Find out the size of end fillets such that the stress in the end fillets are the same. Take the permissible stresses in the weld = 11 0N/mm2. With neat sketches explain compound beams? Explain about web crippling and web buckling with neat sketches? With neat sketches explain laterally unsupported beams? A column made of 2 ISMC 300 placed face to face at 350 mm outer to outer carries an axial load of 400 kN. Design a base plate. A diagonal member of a roof carries a maximum axial pull of 300 kN. Design the section and the connections with a 14 mm gusset plate. The length of the gusset plate available for marking the connection is 400 mm. Design the lug angle if required. The steel used is of yield stress of 250 N/mm2.
