October 3, 1878 – NYT – Born March 1843 – Montreal, Canada – Left Handed
Cyrille Dion, the well known billiard player, died of congestion of the lungs at his mother’s
home in Montreal, early yesterday morning. He has suffered from a severe cold for three
years, and recently spent several months in the South with the hope of recovering his health.
On Friday last he left this City to visit his mother and rest under her care. He caught a fresh
cold in a sleeping car while on his way to Montreal, and this produced the congestion of the
lungs of which he died. Cyrille Dion was born in Montreal in March 1843. Upon leaving
school he entered the grocery business as a clerk. He spent his leisure hours in billiard
playing, and soon became recognized as the best amateur player in Canada.
Dion became a professional player in July 1865, when he won the championship of Canada at
a tournament that lasted a week in Montreal. Soon after this success he defeated the
champions of several Eastern and Western States, and appeared in tournament in this City.
He came to live New York about eight years ago. His first great success here was in winning
the Championship of the United States at a tournament held in the Hippotheatron, on
Fourteenth Street. After defeating Mc Devitt in a great game, which he won by only one
point, Cyrille Dion went to San Francisco to play John Deery, and was there beaten by 14
points in a four-ball game of 1,500 points. He won the diamond cue, the symbol of
championship of the United States in the four-ball game, and retained it for a year and a half,
beating all aspirants for its possession, thus gaining the ownership of the trophy. He won the
championship of America from Maurice Daly, but forfeited it to Garnier, and a few months
ago he defeated all other players in a pool tournament. He did not keep the pool
championship long. The Swedish player, Wahlstrom, challenged and beat him. Cyrille Dion
was a player of great nerve and judgment, and his skill drew to him as much honor and profit
as are attainable by followers of his profession.

Note: Spirit of The Times reported: “In the tie playoff between Frey and Malone, Feb 11, the game was
announced to begin at 8 o’clock, but Frey being a half-hour late, Malone claimed the game, but after
Frey’s arrival, agreed to play under protest, and Malone was defeated by a score of 150 to 89.
Malone’s protest was not sustained and the first prize was awarded to Frey.
NY Times:
“Last night was fixed upon for the decisive game. Malone was on hand at 8 o’clock, but Frey
did no t appear until nearly 9, and his opponent claimed the game by forfeit. This caused a discussion
lasting nearly half and hour, and finally terminating in Malone playing under protest. This seemed to
anger Frey, and he got his revenge by “haling” all the balls in the fist two frames thus getting a lead of
30 points to bank on. Malone never got any closer to him. Frey made some wonderful shot and seized
ever opportunity offered him. At the end of the fourth fame he had 55 points to Malone’s 5. When
Frey completed his first 100 points Malone had 48. These relative positions were maintained until the
sixteenth fame when Frey made the point needed to give him the game, the title of champion, and a
share of the and gate receipts, amounting to $450. Malone made only 89 points. He says he proposes
to fight for last night’s game, on the ground that Frey forfeited it by not appearing on time.

Note: NYT
Great excitement prevailed when this last game was played, and both the contestants were
evidently nervous. Each missed some easy strokes, and De Oro, by getting a lucky ball on a
scratch, found the opening, which made him victorious. Neither of the men played really
first-class game owning doubtless to their anxiety to win. De Oro was congratulated by his
numerous friends in the audience of 200. He refused to shake hands at the conclusion of the
match with his opponent, thus showing the feeling that exists between the men.

April 25, 1889
Albert M. Frey – Current Champion – dies of phenomena at age 26.
***

The Title is vacant.

Note: NYT – April 26
Albert M. Frey, the pool champion, died at his residence, 30 Irving Place, yesterday, of
pneumonia. He had been ill only a few days, and his death was unexpected. Frey, although
Only twenty-six years old, was the best-known pool player in the country. About ten years
ago he came into prominence by winning a tournament in O’Conner’s rooms, on Union
Square, defeating Samuel Knight, Leslie Slosson, Jacob Schaefer, Wahlstrom the Swede, and
other shining lights of the billiard world. His victory elevated him from his position as table
boy in a Nassau Street billiard room to that of champion.
Since that time Frey has taken part in about one hundred matches and tournaments and only
suffered defeat on two occasions. He was a remarkably steady player and showed up to his
best advantage when large sums of money were wagered on the games. His last victory was in
a tournament projected by George Slater last February in this city, when defeated De Oro,
Malone, and other celebrities. Frey was married to a Brooklyn lady about seven months ago,
and his wife, who is sick, survives him.
