Remind children of the work they


did in Year 4 about the three
states of matter: solid, liquid &
gas. Ask children to describe
some of the features of these
states & list them on f/c (refer to
plan resource). Discuss the types
of properties of materials that
children have studied in previous
years too.
Model to children how we can test
different materials for their
properties and explain some of
the terms that could be used to
describe some properties.
Briefly explain that materials can
be put into two group: Natural
and man-made (artificial) and link
this to previous learning done in
Geography.

Children to write previous knowledge of properties


and materials on their whiteboards.
Children to write a definition of what properties
are.
