TRIP REPORT
On 04-06-2012 at around 05:20AM, Bus Bar Protection operated and the GPPCPower Plant suffered a black-out. At that point of time, Bay-5 Savarkundla line-2,
Bay-8 Otha (Mahuva) line-2 and Bay-9 GTG Transformer bays were charged via BusA.
Relay settings:
Savarkundla Line: Zone-4: Z4= 1.31 Ohms, TZ4=500msec
Otha (Mahuva) Line: Zone-4: Z4= 1.17 Ohms, TZ4=500msec
Busbar relay setting: DiffOperLev = 910 A (= 1.3*max bay current (=700A))
Also, the observation in the form of Fault data is as mentioned below:

From the data of P442 of both the lines, it is seen that the Distance protection in
Zone-4 was initiated. The fault current in Y phase is 2.2kA in Savarkundla Line-2 and
1.39kA in Otha Line-2. The fault resistance is seen as -7.525 Ohm and -10.26 Ohm
in Savarkundla Line-2 and Otha Line-2 respectively. The bus bar fault also reads
current in Y phase of bay-5, 8 & 9 more than the operating differential current of
910A. Looking at the magnitude of the currents and Fault resistance, protection was
to be operated. Now as the bus bar protection is instantaneous operation rather
than time delayed operation of Zone-4 protection, Bus-bar relay operated.
The fault can be suspected in Zone-4 i.e. 220kV Bus-A and the fly-over bus up to
Generator Transformer. Now, when the relays for the protection of transformer were
checked for any fault records, there was no record or data for this particular
instant/time. If there was any fault on the fly-over bus up to Generator Transformer,
certainly the transformer protection relay would have recorded the fault data.
Hence, It can be concluded that the Bus-bar relay tripped for fault on the 220kV
Bus-A.
Complete 220kV Bus-A was physically inspected for identification of any problem
like damage to insulators, broken insulator, de-coloured/blackened insulator string
etc. But no such thing was observed. There was a lot of dust deposition on the
insulator. It was also reported by the Operators that sparking/flashing were
observed almost daily during the night hours due to the dusty atmospheric
conditions. Considering these factors, it was concluded that the tripping could have
occurred due to momentary heavy leakage current, which would have created a
momentary flashover.
Thereafter, IR test was conducted with 5kV IR Tester. But the voltage could not be
developed beyond 1700V due to leakage. The IR records with 5kV: Voltage= 1700V,
IR=0.8 Mega Ohm.
It was concluded that the hotline/cold line water washing is required to be done
urgently for cleaning of insulator disc and reduce the leakage current and corona.
