Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. It is used to control pain or a disease process in the affected limb, such as malignancy or gangrene. Accidents most likely to result in amputation are traffic accidents, followed by farm and industrial accidents. Congenital disorders or defective limbs present at birth are not amputations. A person with a limb deficiency can usually be helped by use of an artificial limb.
