Leen. “All our shows run at the same time as the Manistee Civic Players plays at the Ramsdell Theatre,” said Manistee Art Institute director of publicity Carol Marshall. Marshall said people are going to love the opening exhibit “To Be or Not To Be, Art Is the Question,” because it is a show where they really don’t know what type of work will be on display until the artists actually start bringing it in. Back in 2006, the art institute put on a similar show called “Is This Really Art?” that proved to be a big hit with the public. All types of media and artwork will be displayed at this show, and it really isn’t something anyone will want to miss. The imaginations of the Manistee Art Institute members and artists from this area are quite varied, so their creative works will

After more than a decade of delivering blue ribbon shows, this year’s Manistee Art Institute show at the T. Walter Hardy Hall of the Ramsdell Theatre just may end up being one of the very best. And for those who have been attending these shows for the past 15 years, that may be hard to imagine. But it’s true. This year, five shows are lined up and art institute members can’t wait to open the season with the show “To Be or Not To Be, Art Is the Question.” That exhibit premiers on March 12 and runs until March 21. One of the big awards the Manistee Art Institute presents every year is the annual VIVA award that goes to volunteers who constribute to the success of their organization. This year the award went to Pat Lottie, Elaine Sutherland and Deb Van

most likely fall into the same category. Marshall pointed out that the show is open to everyone and anyone that would like to exhibit their work. She reminds artists that work needs to be secure and ready for presentation. Work that can easily be handled by one person will be accepted. Any unsuitably prepared, hazardous, or unstable works will be declined. Artwork needs to be delivered on Sunday, March 21 between 2 and 5 p.m., and again on Monday, March 8 from 5 until 7 p.m. The opening reception for that show will be on Friday, March 12 from 6 until 8 p.m. The opening is always a great opportunity for the public to meet the people behind the artwork and to speak to them about their works. Show dates for that exhibit will continue on March 13, (1-8 p.m.), 14 (1-5 p.m.), 19 (5-8 p.m.), 20 (1-8 p.m.), and 21 (1-5 p.m.). The art institute season will continue with its second show called “Fabrications” that will run from June 25 until July 3 over the Manistee National Forest Festival. This show will feature art of a softer persuasion and should be quite unique. That show will be followed up by “The Look of Peace” scheduled to run Aug. 13-22. It will feature artwork centered around peace and its interpretations. Fall is the time when the beauty of Manistee County really comes to life and an opportunity to show off some of that beauty will take place at the “Open Juried Show” that runs from Oct. 15 to 24. The show is going to be an open competition for area artists. Manistee County is home to many up and coming artists and they will have the opportunity to exhibit their work at the “Students Exhibit” taking place during the Victorian Sleighbell Parade and Old Christmas Weekend celebration. This exhibit will run from Dec. 3 until 12, and will feature the artwork of children in the K-12 grade level. The deadline is rapidly approaching for area students that would like to apply for the 2010 Deb Guenther Memorial Scholarship. Students should note that applications are available in the guidance offices at Manistee County schools and through area art teachers and need to be submitted by March 12. Students can also get them by calling the art institute office at 723-2682 to leave a message about acquiring applications and information. Manistee Art Institute members will conduct interviews of the applicants and they must display three pieces of their artwork. Interviews will be scheduled for the week of April 12. Officers guiding the Manistee Art Institute this year are Tudie Rulison (president), Phyllis Cowden (vice president), Marge Lawrence (treasurer), William Hattendorf (recording secretary), and Carol Marshall (corresponding secretary). The vision thing — hope for the future
Melissa Reed
Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce

I’ve been thinking a lot the last couple of weeks about the whole “vision” thing — strategic planning, community visioning, long-range planning and a dozen other terms used to describe the process of a group of people looking to the future. In recent weeks the chamber board, the City of Manistee, the farmers’ market and the Onekama Planning Commission have all been working on long-range planning and those are just the ones I’ve participated in. Organization and community planning stimulate us to look collectively toward a shared future — imagining what could be. Of course, anytime you bring two or more people together, you’re going to get two or more opinions about the “perfect” future. That’s not just to be expected — it’s essential to a successful plan for the future of a community. When stakeholders have a hand in writing a plan for the future, it naturally follows that they’ll underwrite it as well and it’s the resources of an entire community that ensure a plan’s success. Without the support of the community, there’s no plan — only a fantasy. It’s extraordinary to watch the process in action and to participate in it as well. You see committed, passionate

March Business After Hours has become a tradition thanks to the sponsorship of our friends at Blarney Castle Oil Company and the intimate, welcoming atmosphere and terrific food provided by Rick Shay. One Business After Hours sponsorship left for 2010
The Chamber’s Business After Hours events are more than a great networking opportunity — it’s also a highly effective public relations tool for sponsors. Don’t take our word for it — just ask the sponsors for 2010’s nearly sold out BAH line up. Just one Business After Hours sponsorship opportunity remains for 2010. Lake Bluff Bird Sanctuary has signed on to host Business After Hours on Aug. 12. This is a unique setting in the county and should be a great event. Lake Bluff is looking for a co-host for this Business After Hours. Lake Bluff will provide the venue but needs a partner/partners to provide/serve food and beverages. News from Parkdale Animal Hospital
Parkdale Animal Hospital now offers laser surgery for animals. Instead of a scalpel, a laser is used to make incisions in the skin and other tissues. This results in less pain, less bleeding and less chance of infection. Dr. Betts uses the laser for all surgeries but reports the most dramatic difference in feline declaws and the removal of large tumors. “The recovery is less painful, exactly what we want for our pets.” Parkdale Animal Hospital is proud to offer the latest in veterinary technology for the fourlegged members of your family. MANISTEE-BENZIE COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH BOARD VACANCIES
Manistee County is requesting applications to fill appointments on the Manistee-Benzie Community Mental Health Board of Directors. The Board is made up of five residents from Benzie County and seven residents from Manistee County. State law requires that four of the Board members be primary (themselves) or secondary (family members) consumers (past or present) of any mental health services. The remaining eight are “at large” from various members of the community, including county commissioners and the general public, who may have unique interests in Community Mental Health services. Manistee County is seeking one applicant from each category (primary, secondary, and at large). The applicant must be a permanent resident of Manistee County. Appointments are for a period of three years. If you wish to apply for a position on the Board, please send a resume briefly stating your background and reasons for wishing to serve on the Board, to the Manistee County Clerk’s Office, 415 Third Street, Manistee, MI 49660. Deadline for filing applications is Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Appointments will be made at the March 16th, 2010 Board of Commissioner’s Meeting and you will be seated on the Manistee-Benzie Community Mental Health Board in April, 2010. For further information, please contact Chip Johnston, Executive Director of Manistee-Benzie Community Mental Health at 231-309-1724. Marilyn Kliber Manistee County Clerk

Trinity Lutheran to host annual pork roast dinner
Trinity Lutheran School, located at 420 Oak St., will hold its 60th Annual Pork Roast Dinner on March 6 beginning at 5 p.m. The dinner is sponsored by and is a major fundraiser for Trinity’s Parent Teacher League (PTL). Money raised in recent years has helped fund technology and other equipment needs of the school. This year’s menu includes roast pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, applesauce, dinner rolls, dessert, and beverage. Hot dogs are available for children. Prices this year are the same as last year. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, and $4 for children, ages 6 to 12. Age 5 and under are free. Tickets are available from any TLS parent or by calling Denis Johnson at 723-2602 or the school office at 723-8700. The school holds a long tradition with the pork roast dinner. The event brings the school community together as scores of individuals work to make each year’s supper a success. Planning begins weeks in advance, and on the day of the dinner dozens work together as a well-oiled machine to deliver the dinner. One of the school’s goals with the dinner is to bring the Manistee community together. The sauerkraut supper of 60 years ago had a small beginning. It started in the basement of old Trinity Lutheran School, then located at First and Division streets. All school families are expected to be involved in the event, including upper grade students. The methods of preparation have changed over the years, but the enthusiasm and cooperation of the PTL members still exists. The silent auction is a fairly recent addition to the dinner. The auction is held during dinner hours, from 5 to 7 p.m. School officials say they appreciate the support shown by many area businesses and merchants that donate to the auction. Call the school office 24 hours in advance for supper delivery. Take out is also available. The public is invited to join in the dinner for fine food and good company.
