A bedroom, tidy. A bed, a desk.

A corner of the room has a music stand, a chair, and
images on the wall of violin players.
Opposite, is a comfortable window seat with pillows and a
stack of books. A tree outside the window.
Hanging across the room are 4 large strings. Anyone
walking through the room must navigate past these strings,
but they are not brought to attention.
BAILEY THOMPSON, 13 but mature, lays on her bed
staring through the strings toward the ceiling.
BAILEY
I stopped telling people how long Ive been playing the violin. When I tell people, they
dont believe me. So, Ive taken to just say, a long time. It seems to satisfy most
peoples tiny curiosity. They dont much care anyway. They just dont know what else to
ask a thirteen year old girl who just played Locatellis Caprice in D Major in front of three
thousand people. Sure, I screwed up the arppegioes about a third of the way through, but
a) theyll never notice, and b) its a really hard piece, and c) Im thirteen years old. And
who even cares, anyway? With that much wine before the concert, most people were
asleep before I even got out there anyway. I think the applause was coming from the
speakers, before and after.
(beat)
Im just glad to finally be home.
Bailey rolls over and hugs her pillow.
MELISSA THOMPSON, 40, Baileys mother, enters
with a tray of snacks.
MELISSA
Bailey? You awake?
BAILEY
Yes.
MELISSA
I brought you something.

2.
BAILEY
A snack.
MELISSA
Yes.
BAILEY
Crackers and milk.
MELISSA
Yes.
BAILEY
I dont want any, thank you.
MELISSA
You should have a little something, before you start practicing.
BAILEY
I dont need to practice today, Mom.
MELISSA
What do you mean?
BAILEY
The concert is over. Ive been practicing forever. I want a day to not practice.
MELISSA
Now, you know that were going to Singapore next month...
BAILEY
Singapore? Again?
MELISSA
We talked about this, Bailey. Theyve invited you again.
BAILEY
If I have to play that piece again, Im not going.
MELISSA
Its a special concert...
BAILEY
Theyre all special concerts.

3.
MELISSA
For the heads of state of the region. They want to highlight their international
connections...
BAILEY
Always.
MELISSA
Djean Sang will be there, and Ming Chen, and Poulette. Theyre your friends.
BAILEY
I dont want to be on a plane for a whole day again.
MELISSA
You have a gift, my dear. We share it with the world.
BAILEY
I dont want the gift any more. I dont want to play the violin any more.
MELISSA
Gifts can be burdens, it depends on how you carry them. Youre making it harder than it
is.
BAILEY
You dont know. You dont have to play in front of all those people.
MELISSA
You told me you dont get nervous playing in front of people.
BAILEY
No. I dont. Its just...
MELISSA
Theres other things you love.
BAILEY
I guess I dont know. Id like to be able to try other things, to see if I do.
MELISSA
How about this? Have your snack. Practice-BAILEY
Ugh...
MELISSA
Practice for one hour. Just one.

4.
BAILEY
Do I have to do scales, or can I just play something?
MELISSA
Play.
BAILEY
Does it have to be intricate?
MELISSA
No.
BAILEY
I can play what I want?
MELISSA
Yes.
BAILEY
Then I can do anything I want.
MELISSA
For this afternoon. Until dinner.
BAILEY
Deal.
MELISSA
Deal.
Melissa rises, crosses away.
BAILEY
Yes.
Melissa stops at the door.
MELISSA
Tomorrow, youll start getting ready for the two local shows before the Singapore trip.
And finish the homework project you started last month. That has to be done before we
leave the country. Then well clean the house and get laundry sorted so we can get the
bags packed before the trip.
(at the door)
And keep it down, the babys sleeping.
Melissa closes the door.

5.
Bailey stands in the center of the room.
The strings lower. They stop around Baileys waistheight.
Lights down.
End.
