Taxpayers, Keno fans win with upgrade, site

STURBRIDGE — Good news for taxpayers and Keno

lovers came out of this week’s selectmen’s meeting.
Taxpayers will get a break on the wastewater
treatment plant facility upgrade, and Keno lovers will
have a new place to gamble those savings on Keno.

Based upon the final numbers of the Clean Water State

Revolving Fund Projects Receiving American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act grants subsidy, the state’s
Department of Environmental Protection has adjusted
the town’s principal forgiveness from 8.8 percent to
11.72 percent. As a result, the town’s $16,989,000
loan for its wastewater treatment facility upgrade
project will be reduced by $1,991,111 to $14,997,889.

With the upgrade, the plant will go from treating

750,000 gallons of wastewater per day to 1.3 million
gallons per day and comply with federal phosphorus

As recommended by the 2008 Sturbridge Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan, the completed
wastewater treatment facility will improve water quality in the Quinebaug River, provide better protection of
public and private water supplies near the river, and alleviate residents’ problems with failing and or poorly
functioning septic systems.
