The dear leader Comrade Kim Jong II was born at the
secret camp in Mt. Paekdu on February 16, 1942.
His is a patriotic and revolutionary family which had
fought generation after generation for the independence of
3 the country and the freedom and liberation of the people.
His forefathers were honest-minded poor peasants in-
heriting a family tradition of fortitude and diligence and,
. . . . .19 from the early years of modern Korean history, they took the
lead in the staunch struggle against the foreign aggressors.
His grandfather Kim Hyong Jik was an indomitable
43 revolutionary fighter who had fought for the liberation of the
country and the freedom and happiness of the people, and an
outstanding leader of the anti-Japanese national liberation
. . . . 59 movement. He was a pioneer in changing the course of the
struggle from the nationalist movement to the communist
. . . . 77 movement.
• His grandmother and all those related on both his
paternal and maternal side were also staunch revolutionary
. . . .104 fighters who dedicated their lives to the struggle against the
Japanese imperialist aggressors.
His father, respected Comrade Kim II Sung, is the
123 greatest revolutionary leader whom our people hold in high
esteem for the first time in their history spanning thousands of
years.
Comrade Kim II Sung set out on the road of the
 revolution in his early years, founded the Juche idea, the
guiding idea of our era, and opened up a new path for the
Korean revolution to advance under its banner.
When the Korean revolution was at its dawning the great
leader brought up a new generation of communists and built
up a revolutionary backbone. And by leading the anti-
Japanese armed struggle to victory he carried out the cause of
liberating the country, the greatest event in the national
history of our people.
By his superb and seasoned leadership, Comrade
Kim II Sung has directed the Juche-oriented revolutionary
cause along the straight road of victory, thereby performing
the greatest and brilliant exploits in the 5,000-yearJong
history of Korea.
The dear leader's mother, Comrade Kim Jong Suk took
part, from her early age, in the anti-Japanese revolutionary
struggle led by Comrade Kim II Sung and carried out daring
military activities and. seasoned political work. By so doing,
she made an undying contribution to the cause of liberating
the country.
Comrade Kim Jong Suk, an indomitable communist
revolutionary fighter, resolutely defended and held fast to the
great leader's thought and line, no matter when and where.
She dedicated her all to the-prosperity of the country and the
development of the women's movement.
Born in the great revolutionary family, Kim Jong II took
his first step in life at the anti-Japanese revolutionary
headquarters, witnessing stem and glorious revolutionary
events, and nursed a great revolutionary ambition in the
pulsating reality of the post-liberation days when the Korean
people were building a democratic country.
He was unusually intelligent and sagacious.
From his childhood, through his close observatieto of
things and phenomena and his deep-going contemplation
Kim Jong II comprehended their principle by himself.
He was of such a sturdy and magnanimous disposition
that no matter what he would do, he did everything in a grand
manner and saw it out coping with all difficulties. Moreover,
he was gallant enough to take other person's suffering as his
own and help him out. Magnanimity and generocity towards
people were characteristic of his traits.
In his childhood, when he saw drops of water trickling on
the petals, Kim Jong II clarified a profound truth that one
plus one make a larger one, instead of making two. This
struck people with admiration. Even while running a race at
the head, he stopped to help up his fallen friend, and he was
more pleased to see the little boy resume the dash than he
himself breasted the tape.
At the sight of a steel vessel which was the first to be built
and set afloat by our Korean workers, Kim Jong II dreamed
of another biggerand better one to be made in the future. And
while having a look at a newly-built modern dwelling house,
he thought of building 50-100 storeyed houses in the future.
These high-minded natural dispositions of Kim Jong H
were developed into lofty qualities and brought into bloom as
he received meticulous education from his parents and gained
experience in his personal life.
From early years of age he was nursing a great re-
volutionary aspiration to dedicate everything for the good of
the people.
In the Summer of 1946, the year following the country's
liberation, when he accompanied the great leader to a rural
village in Taedong County, South Pyongan Province, he saw
a peasant drawing water with a pail. Then he pictured in his
 mind a future countryside where farming would be done with
the help of machines. In the Spring of 1947, while going round
the Pyongyang Silk Mill with his dear mother, he made a firm
resolve to free the workers from toilsome labour. He keenly
realized that he would really have a mountain of work to do
for the sake of the working people.
Kim Jong II surmounted the trials he met with in his life.
In this course, he set a lofty goal of revolution and acquired
noble communist qualities.
It was in the Autumn of 1949 when a great misfortune
befell Kim Jong II. His dear mother died of illness.
He endured his sorrow with a strong will-power, with a
firm determination to succeed to his mother's noble purpose,
and endeavoured in all respects to keep the father general safe
and sound, attending on him with fidelity.
To delight the father general on the New Year's Day in
1950 which he was to greet without his mother, Kim Jong II
organized a New Year's Day party and made every effort to
help the great leader relieve himself of all anxiety and worries.
In those days of fidelity Kim Jong II cultivated himself
mentally and physically to acquire the noble quality of loyalty
of a communist revolutionary who deems it a greatest
happiness to give pleasure to the fatherly leader.
The US imperialists and their lackeys provoked a war of
aggression against our young Republic in June 1950. Our
people had to undergo the grim ordeal at the crossroad. It was
amidst the flames of the hard-fought war that Kim Jong II
learned the most precious thing nobody could have acquired
even in several decades.
Later, looking back upon those days, he said:. "The
Fatherland Liberation War was severe. As I saw our people
fighting heroically in those grim days of war, I felt vigour
and valour welling up and made a firm determination to fight
selflessly for the country and people, though I was still
young."
At the time of temporary strategic retreat Kim Jong Π
made his way through the enemy planes' heavy bombing to
the northern boundary of the country and sped up his study
with an earnest desire to hasten the victory in the war. As a
result, it took him only a single year to finish the course of two
years.
In June 1952, following the great leader who was on his
tour of on*the-spot guidance in North Pyongan Province,
Kim Jong II visited Sinuiju City and Sakju area.
Seeing the heroic struggle of our people, he believed more
firmly in the victory in the war and renewed his resolve to fight
for the country and people with all devotion.
After that, Kim Jong II lived with the great leader at the
Supreme Headquaters.
Together with the great leader, he would sit up all night by
a desk of operation, find himself at People's Army positions
reeking of gun-powder, or in factories and enterprises where
war-time production was in full swing, and walk about the
streets set afire by enemy's heavy air bombardment or along
the ridges between rice-fields in the countryside.
In those rigorous days he cherished a conviction that
victory in the war and prospering future of the country were
being secured thanks to the wise leadership and inestimably
great efforts of the great leader.
Putting this lofty faith into words, Kim Jong II wrote
classic song entitled "The Bosom of the Fatherland".

In this immortal classic masterpiece "The Bosom of the
Fatherland" Kim Jong II with a strong emotion sang his
faith that the bosom of the fatherland which was taken back,
being guarded and glorified by the father General, is the
bosom of the General and that the loyalty to the General
represents ardent patriotism.
Enrolled in the fourth-year class of the Mangyongdae
Revolutionary School in November 1952, Kim Jong II rep-
eatedly said to the schoolchildren about the necessity to
follow and learn from the great leader so that they might grow
to be his true sons and daughters.
In February 1953 he organized a "Group for the Study of
the Short Biography of General Kim II Sung" and person-
ally directed its operation.
The mission of the Group was to intensify the study of the
"Short Biography of General Kim II Sung" among the
schoolchildren and help them acquire a deep knowledge of the
great leader's glorious revolutionary history and train them to
be his true sons and daughters. t.
He personally guided the study of the "Short Biography of
General Kim II Sung" among the shoolchildren and got the
members of the Group to conduct extensive explanatory and
propaganda activity for the purpose of acquainting the
masses of people with his greatness.
In July 1953 the Fatherland Liberation War ended in a
great victory for our people.
The great leader called on the entire people for rehabili-
tation and construction under the revolutionary slogan
"Everything for the post-war rehabilitation and development
of the national economy to strengthen the democratic base!"
The whole nation rose in rehabilitation and construction.
Kim Jong II who was transferred from the Samsok
Primary School to the Fourth Primary School in Pyongyang
initiataed a good-conduct campaign and led the schoolchil-
dren to step it up so as to make a positive contribution to the
work of rehabilitation and construction.
He held a meeting of activists and called on all the
schoolchildren to carry on a drive for collecting several bricks
a day during their spring vacation in 1954. The whole school
turned out, in response to his call.
This campaign was conducted by schoolchildren in
Pyongyang and over the whole country.
Later on, Kim Jong II initiated various "good-conduct
campaigns" including a campaign to keep school neat and
skillfully organized and mobilized the masses of schoolchil-
dren in assisting the working people who turned out in
rehabilitation and construction.
Cherishing an earnest desire to follow the great leader
with allegiance, Kim Jong II directed deep attention to the
 work of relieving him of his worry.
In order that he might be of help for the great leader who
was guiding the socialist transformation of the relations of
production, Kim Jong H would go into a market to make a
detailed study of the real state of individual tradesmen; He
would go to rural villages around Pyongyang to leam in detail
about the living conditions of the peasants and see how many
draught animals, seed grains and farm implements they had
secured and how they had made farming preparations for the
following year. Then he told the great leader about their real
situation.
His loyalty to the great leader found its striking expression
in every aspect of life. . creation. He read with an inexhaustible passion books of
In the spring of 1954, in,the grand march for rehabilitation
and construction, our people greeted the birthday of the great
leader for the first time after the war. Greeting this day all the
Korean people wished him good health and long life from the
bottom of their hearts and earnestly hoped that he would have
a quiet rest at least for the day.
However, the great leader declined it, spending the whole
day in his on-the-spot guidance to agricultural co-operatives
in Samjon-ri, Chunghwa County, South Pyongan Province.
Kim Jong II, who could not allow himself to let the
meaningful day drop, made an arrangement for a con-
gratulatory message to be offered to the great leader expres-
sing the earnest desire of the people all over the country. So,
on behalf of the schoolchildren several representatives went to
see the great leader and presented him with the con-
gratulatory message prepared with all sincerity and wished a
long, long life to him.
This simple ceremony did not have many participants, nor
was it made known to the general public. But the affair on that

significant evening has been told down to history as a picture
of loyalty of our people to the leader.
Kim Jong II entered the Pyongyang Middle School No. 1
in September 1954.
At the middle school he devoted more energies to
deepening the study to learn from the leader, so as to grasp his
revolutionary ideas.
Kim Jong II studied all the works of the great leader
according to their historical and systematic order.
Along with this, he broadened and deepened his know-
ledge of different scientific branches.
Kim Jong II said that passion was the source of great
elementary scientific branches such as mathematics, physics
and chemistry as well as of specialized technical branches such
as mechanical engineering and live-stock breeding and ac-
quired necessary knowledge while maturing a far-reaching
plan for the future of a rich, strong and prospering country.
While acquainting himself well with the achievements of
science and culture gained by mankind, Kim Jong II exerted
his efforts to translate the great leader's Juche thought on
literature and art into the reality of the literary and artistic
branches such as literature, film and fine arts, ect.
He stressed that we should sing our Korean songs in our
own way whenever we want to sing and draw Koreans' face in
every picture we want to draw and that Juche-based, people's
literature and art, distinct in ideology and understandable to
all, should be developed. And he directed students to put it
into practice.
Kim Jong II carried on dynamic organizational and
political activities among school youth.
While directing the work of the Democratic Youth

 League organization at school from the end of 1956, he
conducted energetic activities to improve the work with
youth.
He paid deep attention to implementing the great leader's
teaching that the Democratic Youth League should intensify
ideological education among the youth if it was to discharge
its mission as a mass educational organization.
The character of the students in their youth, each with a
more sense of independence, cherishing a great hope and
ambition and the reality where a great upsurge was taking
place in the Chollima movement in socialist construction and
a bitter struggle was going on within the Party to get rid of
factionalism made it necessary to further deepen the ideo-
logical work among school youth.
In his concluding speech delivered at the general member-
ship meeting of the Democratic Youth League organization
held in September 1957 Kim' Jong II emphasized that studies
should be subordinated to establishing a revolutionary world
outlook.
After making an analysis of the prevailing situation, he
referred to the mission the new generation assumed for the
revolution and to the importance of the period of senior
middle school in people's lifetime.
Then he made it clear that the basic direction and target of
the studies and education in the senior middle school days
should be the formation of a revolutionary world outlook.
To equip school youth firmly with a revolutionary world
outlook Kim Jong II directed them to establish Juche in their
study.
He said: "We should learn and get ready to make the
Korean revolution and to carry the revolutionary cause of the
great leader to completion. Everything should be sub-

ordinated to this. Precisely this is the Korean way and Juche
in their study."
He made all students make a deep-going study of the great
leader's celebrated work "On Eliminating Dogmatism and
Formalism and Establishing Juche in Ideological Work" and
put it into practice.
While inducing them to proceed with their study with
main emphasis on the great leader's revolutionary idea, our
Party's policies and things of our own country, he led them to
conduct literary and artistic activities in a Juche-oriented way
to suit the national taste and in studying science and
technology exert themselves mainly for acquiring deep know-
ledge of the achievements in our socialist construction.
Dynamic struggle was waged to establish Juche with the
result that the students came to have such a viewpoint and
stand in their study and life, in their thinking and behaviour as
to .put main stress on things of our own and find solutions in
conformity with specific conditions of our revolution and our
country.
Kim Jong II encouraged the Democratic Youth League
organization to combine the ideological education among its
membership closely with the fight against factionalism and
for establishing the ideological system of the Party.
In the field of education, too, there were deeply-rooted
ideological hangovers of the factional elements who were
disclosed and purged at the August 1956 Plenary Meeting of
the Party Central Committee.
The school principal, a cat's-paw of the factionalists,
availed himself of every opportunity to oppose the lines and
policies of the Party both openly and secretly. Opportune
blows were dealt at the factional element each time it was on
the move, and on the occasion of the general membership

system, through which the DYL organizations guided the
Children's Union with responsibility, and reinforced the
"youth group for assistance in keeping with the public order",
so that their socio-political activities were further invigorated.
One day he visited the home of the late Hero Li Su Bok,
together with DYL members.
He took a walk along the road by which he set out for the
front and met the Hero's mother, from whom he heard a story
about the Hero's schooldays, while helping her in her work.
His stay at the Hero's home with his mother for this one
day was a significant event in that it made a deep impression
on the DYL members.
Kim Jong II admirably organized and led the work of
training young students through revolutionary practice.
It was at that time when the Pyongyang speed was being
created at every construction site to carry out a new
construction policy set forth by the great leader.
In May 1958 he organized a meeting of young students to
rouse them to action for participating in a campaign of
supporters for the building of Pyongyang City.
Kim Jong II said to students: "Nothing is happier and
more honourable for us young people than to demonstrate
the honour of being a vanguard, a shock force in the
implementation of the great leader's instructions. We should
fully realize our lofty mission entrusted by the age and

revolution and turn out to socialist construction sites to
perform new feats of labour."
He took students with him to a site of campaign to
produce building parts.
While conducting political work in diverse forms such as
propaganda with the help of visual aids and agitation by
artistic performance among the students, he organized their
work compactly to finish the production of structural com-
ponents at an unprecedented speed.
In October that year, with a view to realizing the great
leader's idea to turn Pyongyang, the capital of revolution,
into a city thick with greenery in the parks, he organized tree-
planting. In April the following year, he participated in the
work to embank the Taedong River, where he personally
excavated muds in the water for embankment encouraging
students to feats of labour.
Engaging himself in manual labour in those days, he
implanted among the student the spirit of selfless service for
the good of the country and the revolution and the strong will
to overcome difficulties.
Kim Jong II ensured that the establishment of a re-
volutionary outlook on the leader should be the keynote in
the whole course of political life of the youth.
At a student's gathering in April 1959 he gave an
explanation of the position and the role of the leader in the
revolutionary struggle and of the attitude and stand that
ought to be maintained by communists towards him.
If a revolutionary struggle is to emerge victorious, he said
to bring them to reason, they should have a right leader, arm
themselves firmly with the leader's idea, defend and guard
him politically and at the cost of their lives.
This, he went on, has been fully proven by the experience

of our people's historical struggle to take back the country.
Thanks to the correct guidance of the great leader, the Korean
revolution has been able to advance along a straight triumph-
ant road full of glory. We should, therefore, deem it a
boundless honour and happiness to hold in high esteem the
great leader with high regards, and prepare ourselves more
firmly to be his true sons and daughters.
After that, he taught the student and youth time and again
to possess a revolutionary outlook on the leader as the most
valuable creed in life.
He emphatically told the students who were leaving
school after finishing the whole senior middle school course:
"Whenever we may take root, we should make-our youth
shine, upholding the intentions of the great leader."
As they listened to him attentively, the students deeply felt
with the feats the great leader had performed in the re-
volutionary struggle and construction work and hardened an
ardent desire to be loyal to him.

1964)
From September I960 Comrade Kim Jong II conducted
his revolutionary activites at Kim II Sung University, where
he devoted himself to scientific pursuits.
The first half of the 1960s was a historical period when
great changes were taking place in our revolution and in the
development of the world situation.
Our country was accelerating a fresh onward march
towards a higher stage building socialism in an all-round way.
Then the new generation who had never undergone exploi-
tation and oppression in former days began to make their
appearances as masters of the revolution and the work of
construction.
The international arena also witnessed the conversion of
socialism into a world-wide system and our people were
confronted with the historic duty to safeguard the triumphant
revolution to the hilt and carry the people's revolutionary
struggle for national independence and the building of a new
society through to the end.
On the day when he entered the university, Kim Jong II
made a firm determination to carry the cause of Juche
forward,'saying:
"As I have come into the highest seat of science I find
myself resolved more firmly to bear the future of our
revolution on the shoulder upholding the lofty intentions of

the great reader. I am going to turn my university days into a
period of significance in grasping the leader's revolutionary
ideas more deeply and making preparations to shoulder the
Korean revolution."
That day he went atop Mt. Ryongnam, where he recited a
poem, entitled "Korea, I Will Add Lustre to You!" carrying
his unshakable determination.
As I stand on Mt. Ryongnam with the sun rising
The land of Korea of 3,000 ri comes into my embrace
Studying the leader's lofty aim on this land
I will become the master responsible for the Korean revolution
O, Korea! I will add lustre to you
Holding the great leader in high esteem
I will go vigorously along one road of Juche
Battling with raging wind, waves and storms
I will lead Korea to future
O, Korea! I will add lustre to you
I will go on for ever with the cause of the sun
The shines over the whole world
I will bring about the era of communism
When the red glow of Juche will cover the earth
O, Korea!, My Korea!
In this poem he affirmed his pledge and firm will to be a
master responsible for the Korean revolution after learning
the leader's lofty idea and bring the Korean revolution to
completion generation after generation, holding the great
leader in high esteem.
While exerting himself with an ardent zeal for scientific

pursuits, Kim Jong II made every effort to rear the students
to be competent revolutionary cadres armed with advanced
scientific and technological knowledge.
We should work more energetically in our university days,
he said, to prepare ourselves to be revolutionary workers
equipped with versatile knowledge, who are capable of
rendering admirable service for the Party, the fatherland and
the people.
He taught that if the youth and students were to realize the
great leader's lofty intention to develop our country at a rapid
rate, they should deeply study and grasp his revolutionary
ideas and engage themselves in academic pursuits with such
ambition and audacity as to make an invention of world
significance in their twenties and thirties.
In March 1961 Kim Jong II initiated a movement to read
10,000 pages in a year.
The fundamental of this drive was to induce the students
to make a deep-going, comprehensive and systematic study of
the great leader's works and read a good many books
necessary for acquiring knowledge of their specialised scien-
tific branches and enhancing their cultural attainments, so as
to train them to be revolutionary personnel developed in an
allround way.
Kim Jong II kindled the flames of this drive among the
students and gave steady guidance to help make brisk
headway along a right track.
He would often go to see students at work, work out study
plans for them and guide their discussion as well.
It happened one of those days that he looked into
notebooks of those who were preparing their discussion on a
work of the great leader. He found that the notebooks

 contained draft of their discussion, which was not based on its
original but on its annotated edition.
This was an inclination manifested by not a few students.
Some of them would read any novels or magazines that came
in their hand to increase the number of pages they had read.
Kim Jong II remarked: "In the study of the great leader's
works you must read a great deal of their original. In order to
make the great leader's revolutionary thought your faith, you
must read his works ten or even twenty times until you grasp
their essence, thinking deeply over the ideas contained by each
phrase of his works."
After they received this teaching the students' campaign to
read books with the aim of deeply studying the great leader's
works came to gain greater momentum along the right track.
In particular, Kim Jong II inspired with his personal
example the students to study hard.
With a view to grasping the essence of the great leader's
revolutionary idea he read the leader's classical works day
and night and made it the sole criterion for his thinking and
action. He went through all the classical books authored in
the former days and found out their limitations and short-
comings one by one.
That was not all. He made an extensive and profound
study in every domain of ideological theories and scientific
and technical achievements gained by mankind from philo-
sophy, political economy, history, literature, military affairs
and art to natural science and technical engineering. And he
broke higher original ground for academic pursuits with new
conceptions and theories.
The personal example and dynamic guidance of
Kim Jong II gave strong impetus to the 10,000 page-reading
drive, which developed to be a mass movement for establish-

ing a Juche-oriented viewpoint and stand and a revolutionary
habit of study.
Furthermore, Kim Jong II ensured that the question-
answer method was applied extensively in the study among
students.
One day he called some leading students and told them to
conduct study by the question-answer as the anti-Japanese
guerrillas had done.
The anti-Japanese guerrillas did their study in the way of
questioning and answering each other whether at rest or on
the march.
This method in the study is the most effective one of study
which makes it possible to develop the creative ability while
consolidating what they have learned because a large number
of people gather and proceed with their study through
questions and answers, thus enabling themselves to find a
solution easily for the problem an individual has failed to
solve for himself, and because everybody can not only
enhance his faculty of presentation through his participation
in the discussion but arrange his knowledge in order and
systematize it by his own brains.
Kim Jong II created an exemplary model for this method
of study and generalized it among the students.
In this course the formalist and dogmatist way of study
was overcome and the scholarly attainments of students were
further enhanced.
Thanks to his energetic guidance for increasing the zeal
for study, the school youth came to grow into revolutionary
cadres of Juche type well prepared politically and ideologi-
cally, scientifically and technologically.
Kim Jong II exerted great efforts to strengthen revo-
lutionary organized life.

 He did all he could to strengthen the Party life of its
membership.
In many of his highly important works such as "Let Us
Intensify Criticism and Self-Criticism," "Let Us Strengthen
the Unity and Cohesion of the Party Members in Ideology
and Purpose Based on the Leader's Revolutionary Idea",
"Let Us Make the Review of the Party Life on a High
Politico-Ideological Level" and "On Further Enhancing the
Role of the Party Cell of the Students," he lucidly clarified the
revolutionary character and mission of our Party and set
forth the tasks arising in the organizational and ideological
strengthening of the Party and the improvement of the Party
membership's life.
In guiding the Party life of its members Kim Jong II led
them, first of all, to participate in their organizational life
willingly with a correct viewpoint on the organization.
He taught that Party members should always approach
their Party organizations respectfully, rely on them for the
solution of every matter and carry out decision of their Party
organization and its assignments to them in good time and
honestly.
Then he made the Party members steel their Party spirit
constantly through criticism and self-criticism and strengthen
the unity and cohesion of its ranks in every way.
On September 19, 1962 Kim Jong II guided a general
membership meeting of the Party cell and stressed there that
the unity and cohesion of the Party members in ideology and
purpose should be strengthened on the basis of the great
leader's revolutionary idea.
In his concluding speech, he said that the unity and
cohesion of the Party is the life and soul of the working class
party and the decisive guarantee for all victories. He taught

that in order to strengthen the Party's unity and cohesion the
Party members must firmly arm themselves with the great
leader's revolutionary ideology, struggle against even the
slightest manifestation of factionalism, localism and nepot-
ism, strengthen their revolutionary organizational life and
improve the work method and style of the Party's junior
functionaries .
This general membership meeting which was held under
the guidance of Kim Jong II marked an important occasion
in tempering the Party spirit of its membership and
strengthening the unity and cohesion in ideology and will of
the collective.
He also instituted a new system and order for the Party
members to review their Party life. This brought about a
revolutionary change in the improvement of the Party life of
its membership and in the furtherance of their revolutioniz-
ation and furnished a prototype of the Party's new order of
summing up the Party life.
Kim Jong II did not approve dual discipline in organiz-
ational life. He took the initiative in observing the Party's
organizational discipline strictly.
It happened one day in September 1961.
The Party cell chairman held a general membership
meeting of his cell without letting him know of it, since the
item on the agenda was the improvement of students'
dormitory life.
Kim Jong II, who found the fact later, said, "I am also a
member of the Party cell, so I must not absent myself from its
general membership meeting. The Party members should all
conduct themselves as stipulated by in the Party rules."
The cell chairman could hardly keep back his admiration

for the strong sense of organization and noble personality of
Kim Jong II.
The highly important instructions given by Kim Jong II
while guiding the organized life of Party members during his
university days and his exploits and experience in the
guidance of Party life served as valuable ideological and
moral wealth and a powerful weapon in Party building and its
activities.
Kim Jong II directed deep attention to stregthening the
organizational life of the youth and students in the DYL
organization as well.
In his highly important talks with the functionaries of the
DYL primary organization, he elucidated the theoretical and
practical problems that arose in strengthening and developing
the work of the DYL and raised our youth movement to a new
higher track.
He gave a clear explanation of the position and role of the
youth movement in the development of the revolution, the
essence of the young communist movement and the basic
duties and tasks facing the young communist movement.
Kim Jong II gave lucid teachings with regard to the tasks
confronting the University's DYL organizations, too.
He enunciated fundamental problems arising in the work
of the University DYL organization, such as the problem
concerning the organizational and political work to be so
conducted by the University DYL organization as to grasp
mainly politico-ideological education among students, thus
encouraging them to study hard; the problem of the
strengthening of DYL members' organizational life; the
problem of rectifying the method and the style of work of the
DYL functionaries; and the problem of turning the DYL
organizations into a pulsating, vigorous and militant ones.

The ideas and theories that was made clear by
Kim Jong II served as a compass of great importance in
further consolidating and bringing the youth movement and
the DYL work to a higher plane.
He guided DYL organizations to conduct ideological
education substantially among students in accordance with
their essential task befitting the ideological educational
organization for the students.
Kim Jong II detailed and helped rectify the work method
and style of DYL functionaries.
One day he sent for a primary DYL functionary, who had
been spoken ill of by DYL members on account of his rude
manner in his method and style of work.
Walking along the road in the University compound with
the functionary, he had a talk with him, around there were
beautiful flowers over which bees and butterflies were flying.
He said. "As flowers smell sweet, bees and butterflies of all
kinds come close to them like that. In case with dur youth
league workers, too, young people will follow of their own
accord if they are well-mannered and enjoy great popularity.
Youth league workers should be infinitely simple and always
be modest and mix well with young people."
Even referring to such a natural phenomenon as might be
regarded as commonplace by everybody, Kim Jong II gaved
meaningful teachings as to the method and style of work to be
possessed by youth functionaries. As he listened to him, the
DYL worker renewed his resolve to conduct his activities as a
genuine functionary whom the masses would love from the
bottom of their hearts.
It was under such an energetic guidance and deep
care Kim Jong II gave that school youth made fresh
improvement in their activities in the DYL organization and

f that the youth movement of our country came to usher in a
new era to take over the Juche cause and carry it forward-
Kim Jong II exerted a great deal of energy to steel the
students in the course of revolutionary practice.
In April 1961 he in company with students, participated in
the productive training at the Pyongyang Textile Machine
Factory.
In connection with the start of this training, he had a talk
with students entitled "Let Us Further Consolidate the
Knowledge Gained at School through Practice".
In the talk he explained to them how important and
significant the practical training was and how to conduct it
and he told that the students should plunge themselves into
the realities of socialist construction to make better prepar-
ations through practice to be communist revolutionaries of a
Juche type.
During the period of practical training Kim Jong II even
handled a machine in person. Thus he showed students a great
example of tempering himself in the practice of socialist
construction.
Inspired by his noble example, while engaged in the
production training, the students went among workers to give
an explanation of the validity of the Party's policy while
learning from their revolutionary spirit and organization and
had a good grasp of the organization of production and the
method of management and operation, and the superiority of
the socialist system of economic management.
In May that year Kim Jong II participated in the con-
struction project to expand the road between Wasandong and
Ryongsong, where he kept training the youth and students to
be pioneers, revolutionaries who would struggle through
thick and thin to carry out the great leader's instructions.

One day the students who followed Kim Jong ι, II to
participate in the expansion project were going to do excav-
ation work to lay underground waterpipes.
Excavation was a tough job, and that it rained in torrents.
A shovelful of earth scooped up would soon be doubled as
earth slid down from above. What was worse, the wall broke
down to make the work still tougher.
One of the students had got so tired out with hard work
that he was tottering as he shovelled.
Kim Jong II considered that he should train students to
be persevering in this difficult situation and backbreaking
labour. So, looking around, he encouraged them to brace
themselves up calling: "Comrades, let's sing. Let's pull
through the difficulties modelling after the fighting spirit of
anti-Japanese revolutionary martyrs who had fought in the
thick forest of Mt. Paekdu."
The students responded to this ardent call with a re-
volutionary song, which turned into a loud chorus in no time.
Their redoubled courage helped the students surmount all
difficulties and completed their excavation work with flying
colours.
When every company was hesitating to undertake the
excavation project to lay trunk sewer, which was the toughest
work, Kim Jong II went to the scene and began to work
before anyone else, so powerfully inspiring them to feats of
labour.
Thanks to such kind teachings and excellent examples, the
students were able to maintain the communist attitude
Si towards labour and collectivist spirit firmly and cultivate an
indomitable revolutionary spirit in the thick of hard and
labour-consuming work.
Acting upon the guidance of Kim Jong II, as seen above

 the students, through their revolutionary practice, could have
excellent qualities and qualifications essential for communist
revolutionaries of Juche type and grow up to be communist
revolutionary cadres possessed of the independent and creat-
ive power of cognition and action, and a high level of cultural
attainments and the artistic ability.
Kim Jong II paid much attention to help improve the
University educational work with the aim of training the
students better as continuers of the Juche cause.
He acquainted himself in an allround way with the
contents and methods of teaching at the University and its
administration and consistently guided them so that they
could undergo radical improvement.
First of all, he made sure that Juche was established firmly
in the University's education and scientific research.
Only when Juche is firmly established in education and
scientific research is it possible to train the school youth to be
independent and creative beings and to develop the country's
science and technology in the interests of the revolution.
In order to establish Juche in teaching and training he
made certain that a clean sweep was made of the survivals of
flunkeyism and dogmatism in the contents of all the teaching
materials and that our Party's policies were embodied in them
comprehensively.
He vigorously pushed ahead with the work of changing
the old system of political economics on the basis of Juche
methodology.
In September 1960 and 1961 he explained in detail to
teachers and scholars what shortcomings were contained in
the teaching materials of the political economics written in a
dogmatic way. He pointed to the need to conceive a new
system and content of political economics in accordance with

the ideology, theory and method of the great leader.
Along with this, he taught that the political economics
which will be re-written in new textbook should be one based
on the Juche idea and the mass line and that it should include
all problems the great leader had solved in a unique way,
including our Party's policy of carrying on agricultural
cooperativization prior to the socialist industrialisation and
the Chollima Movement, the general line of socialist con-
struction, etc.
That was not all. He sent many kinds of materials to help
the teachers and scholars in writing the textbooks.
And the result was the birth of the first edition of book on
political economy based on the great leader's ideology.
Kim Jong II gave wise guidance so that Juche was
established thoroughly in teaching history.
In his historic paper "On Re-examining the Problem of
the Unification of the Three Kingdoms", he quoted detailed
historical facts to make it clear that the former view of the
unification by Silla of the three kingdoms in Korea was
entirely unwarrantable. He said that instead of advertising the
so-called "Silla's achievements", we should not overlook the
fact that Silla was the first flunkeyist ancestor who had
brought foreign forces to our land. Then he emphasized that
the basic stream of our country's history was formed not by
Silla but by Koguryo and that the territorial unification of our
country was realized by Koryo which had been carrying
forward the aspiration of Koguryo.
This conception served as the scientific theoretical found-
ation on which our history can be re-arranged systematically
in accordance with the Juche-oriented methodology.
Kim Jong II elucidated a scientific method which made it
possible to introduce a new system on the Juche standpoint

 into different branches of social science including philosophy,
law, literature and history of the national economy.
He directed deep attention to improving the method of
teaching which is the basic one of school education.
He ensured that the old cramming method of teaching
with main stress on taking notes was throughly eliminated
and heuristic teaching, which promotes the students' indepen-
dence and creativity, introduced in an all-round way. Along
with this, he pointed the need to organize seminars on subjects
interestingly through discussion and debate, so as to posit-
ively develop students' thinking.
Furthermore, he taught that it was required to improve
visual and demonstrative education in the University's edu-
cational work, so that the students could have a vivid idea of
things and phenomena and of scientific principles through
our country's living reality.,
Saying that a scientific fantasy would be necessary for
those specialised in science and technology, he advised that
they should give full scope to their Korean way of fantasy to
develop the economy and actively utilize our underground
resources.
Kim Jong II saw to it that education was required to
combine theoretical education closely with practical training
to rear students to "be steadfast and competent communist
revolutionaries.
He gave a comprehensive explanation of the problems
arising in linking education with productive labour, theoret-
ical education with practical training, and encouraged stud-
ents to acquire a useful, living knowledge through various
practical trainings.
He exerted a great deal of energy to have the work of the

University's educational administration carried out correctly.
He saw that educational programmes were well drawn up
on the basic principle of Juche-oriented pedagogy and in
conformity with our country's reality, regularize and standar-
dize instruction work, establish a scientific system of edu-
cational administrative guidance in the University and gear
up educational work thoroughly to the demands of the
pedagogical processes. In addition, he made a point of
enhancing the responsibility and role of the educational and
administrative workers so as to strictly observe the whole of
educational discipline — teaching discipline, examination
discipline, training discipline, etc.
Moreover, he saw that classrooms, study rooms, labora-
tories and all other educational facilities were managed in a
cultural way, and the teaching staff and students were made to
participate in the work of managing them as masters so as to
build up the University like the centre of the cultural
revolution and the base for creating native cardres and
manage them assiduously.
Thanks to the energetic guidance of Kim Jong II, the
great leader's conception of Juche-oriented education was
realized splendidly'in the University's educational work and
Kim II Sung University was made to discharge its lofty
mission and duty admirably, as befitting the seat of Juehe-
oriented education and the base for training the commanding
personnel of our revolution.
Kim Jong II dynamically conducted ideological and
theoretical activities to defend and safeguard the great
leader's revolutionary ideology and develop it in depth.
With his unique ideological and theoretical activities he
gave correct solutions to new and important problems raised
by the revolution and, at the same time, splendidly safeguar-

 ded the purity of the Juche idea founded by the great leader
and developed it in depth in conformity with the demands of
the revolutionary development.
He gave a new elucidation, before anything else, of the
position and role of a leader in the revolution and
construction.
Under the condition where the modern revisionists who
had made their appearance in the international communist
movement at that time were concentrating their arrows on
vilifying and attacking the leader to do harm to the re-
volutionary cause of the working class, it posed a matter of
greater importance to give a clear definition of the leader's
position and role in the revolutionary struggle and defend his
authority.
Precisely at this juncture Kim Jong II propounded an
entirely «ew, unique theory that the leader of the working
class holds the absolute position and plays decisive role in the
revolutionary struggle.
He said that the leader is the central figure for the unity
and cohesion of the masses of the people, their brain and
supreme leading figure. Thus he clarified the leader's decisive
role in the revolution and construction. Then, clarifying the
inseparable relationship between the leader and the masses of
people, he explained the fact that as a man without his head
connot do his part properly, so the people without their leader
cannot play their role as the makers of history.
Kim Jong II expounded a new theory on succeeding to
the leader's revolutionary cause.
He pointed out:
"As the leader plays the decisive role in the revolutionary
struggles of the working class, so does his successor in
carrying from generation to generation the revolutionary

cause of the working class through to its end." ,ι
Kim Jong Π taught that heir to the leader should be a
man who has grasped the leader's ideology perfectly, fights to
defend and carry it into effect at the cost of his life and
possesses outstanding leadership ability and brilliant
intelligence.
In order, he said further, to inherit the leader's re-
volutionary cause correctly, it is necessary to equip the rising
generation firmly with the leader's revolutionary ideas and
the revolutionary traditions of the Party.
During his enrollment in the University where he was
conducting his revolutionary activities, Kim Jong II waged a
powerful struggle to resolutely defend our Party's line for
socialist construction and for the building of an independent
national economy from the attack and vilification by re-
actionaries of all brands.
It was in those days when he made public lots of historic
works, such as "Some Problems Arising in Comprehending
the Basic Line of Building the Socialist Economy", "The
Validity of Our Party's Policy for Developing the Local
Economy", "The Taean Work System Is an Original Socialist
Form-of Economic Management", "Let Us Firmly Defend
Our Party's Line of Building the Independent National
Economy" and "The Position and Role of the County in the
Building of Socialism".
In those works and his highly important speeches he
substantially proved the economic concept and theories
formulated by the great leader to be the most revolutionary
and scientific programmes for economic construction, giving
a comprehensive exposition of their originality, greatness and
indestructible vitality.
In his immortal classic work "The Position and Role of

 the County in the Building of Socialism", he systematized in
an integral whole the theory on the position and role of the
county as a regional base for the building of socialism and
communism, thereby giving a scientific answer to the most
difficult question confronting our era in socialist construction
in the countryside.
In his university days, moreover, Kim Jong II made a
clean sweep of the flunkeyist and dogmatist hangovers
lingering in different scientific branches — philoshphy,
history, literature and arts and military science, and pro-
pounded new theories and methodology for studying science
on the basis of the immortal Juche idea.
Kim Jong II clearly explainded the reactionary nature of
modern revisionism and imperialism.
In his work made public in January 1962 under the title
"The Characteristics of Aggressive Nature of Contemporary
Imperialism", he comprehensively systematized the theory on
modern imperialism and developed it in depth and scope.
As for the characteristics of contemporary imperialism,
Kim Jong II said:
"Contemporary imperialism is not merely based on
monopoly. It takes the state monopoly capitalism as its
politico-economic basis. It depends on neo-colonialism, not
on old colonialism. Imperialism exists each other not in a
paralled way but has been re-formed in a subordinated way,
with US imperialism as its head. It is not growing but quickly
weakening and declining, making desperate efforts."
This classic formulation given by Kim Jong II was an
excellent idea laying bare the true colours of modern imperia-
lism and a great idea laying the ideological and theoretical
basis of anti-imperialist, anti-US strategy.
In this work, he also disclosed and condemned the whole

nasty and vicious nature of the imperialist aggression.
The vicious nature of the imperialist aggression,
Kim Jong II said, finds expression in the fact that the
imperialists, who, in former days, kept fighting each other for
the acquisition of economic concessions and colonies after
they had held sway over a greater part of the world, are
nowadays turning most of their spearhead of aggression and
intervention on destroying and eliminating the socialist and
other revolutionary forces.
He pointed out the vicious nature of modem imperialism
is manifested in its crafty attempt to undermine the socialist
countries and revolutionary forces from within under the
signboards of "peace" and "cooperation".
Kim Jong II branded as an out-and-out reactionary and
capitulationist sophism the revisionist view that imperialism
had abandoned its aggressive scheme and become
"reasonable".
In the last part of his document, he said that the world
revolutionary forces should unite firmly and fight stubbornly
under the uplifted banner of anti-imperialist, anti-US
struggle, in order to finally sweep imperialism off the globe
and bring the world revolution to completion.
The outstanding ideological and theoretical activity
Kim Jong II had carried out in his university days affords a
splendid demonstration of his qualifications and qualities as
the great heir to the Juche cause, in that it served the purpose
of giving scientifically-substantiated answers to the new and
important questions raised by the era and revolution and of
resolutely defending the great leader's revolutionary ideas

soybean sauce and earnestly referred to the necessity of
improving their quality, adding that tasty soup would depend
on the flavour of soybean paste.
Kim Jong II stressed that shop-keepers should act as
genuine housewives for the people and supply the people with
soybean paste and many other kinds of foodstuffs without
exhausting their stock.
With a view to improving commodity supply and public
service for the people, Kim Jong II directed many shops and
department stores on the spot, including the Changgyong
Shop and Sosan Groceries in Sosong District, Pyongyang, in
May and June 1961, the Yaksu Shop in Changsong County in
August that year, the Pyongnam No. 1 Noodles Shop in
August and September 1962, the Pyongyang Children's
Department Store and the township general shop in
Pyongsan, North Hwanghae Province, in January and
February 1963.

Kim Jong Il's energetic guidance resulted in success in
the implementation of the great leader's far-reaching plan to
quickly raise the people's standard of living.
Assisting the great leader in his work he directed much
concern to increasing the combat capacity of the People's
Army.
Kim Jong II gave guidance so that the soldiers were
inspired to have ardent fidelity to the great leader and a high
degree of political and ideological awareness through intensi-
fied ideological education among them, upholding the slogan,
"Let us defend the Party Central Committee headed by
beloved Comrade Kim II Sung with our lives!"
Visiting a flying corps in July 1963, Kim Jong II made
detailed inquiries into the state of the airmen in discharging
their combat duties. After that, he defined their duty as
safeguarding the sky above Pyongyang where the great leader
was. Thus he kindled the flame of loyalty in their hearts.
As he saw the combat preparedness of the airmen who
were on duty, Kim Jong II told them the need to train flight
constantly and become skilled in it, adding that only then
would it be possible for them to drive the complex and delicate
aircraft at will and fully overwhelm the enemy both tactically
and technically under whatever unfavourable combat
situation.
That day he further gave explicit teachings on all problems
arising in the strengthening of combat readiness and combat
capacity of corps — how to intensify separate trainings with
regard to the essential parts for shortening the time to go into
action, how to make the airmen not only acquire a thorough
mastery of their machines but study the enemy's aircraft, and
how to repair and equip the aircraft effectively.
When he paid a visit to a defence outpost Kim Jong II

brought it home to the soldiers that their hearts should always
be afire with hatred for US imperialism and class enemies of
all shades imposing all sorts of misfortune and hardship upon
our people.

Kim Jong II made an energetic effort to establish the Party's
monolithic ideological system firmly in the whole Party and

"The leader's Juche idea represents the solely correct
guiding idea of our times and the unchangeable guiding
compass for all our activities."
He raised it as one of the fundamental problems in
accomplishing the great leader's revolutionary cause to take
his revolutionary ideas as the only guiding idea of our
revolution and as the solid guiding compass for thinking and
practice and to defend them invariably.
He launched dynamic activities first of all to overcome
flunkeyism, dogmatism and the worship for the preceding
revolutionary theories which had been lingering in the minds
of the people.
The unquestioned attitude towards the preceding classics
and the dogmatist and flunkeyist attitudes towards foreign
experience, which had long been implanted, made it im-
possible to have a correct understanding of the greatness of
the Juche idea, causing a big hindrance to establishing the
Party's monolithic ideological system.
Deeply studying the real state of affairs mentioned above,
Kim Jong II, in his May 1966 talk with scientific and
theoretical workers and in many other speeches, made a clear-
cut exposition of the historical position of the preceding
revolutionary theories of the working class and their social
and historical limitations. And he gave highly important
instructions with regard to the Juche-based standpoint and

revolutionary theories of the working class, is to have
scientific and theoretical grasp on the greatness and origi-
nality of the great leader's revolutionary ideas and on the

and propositions by using the .great leader's revolutionary

Saying that most important of all was to establish Juche
thoroughly in our Party's ideological work and theoretical
propagandism and in the work of science and education, he
gave scientifically-substantiated answers to various theoret-
ical and practical problems arising therefrom.
He bent a great deal of efforts on his ideological and
theoretical activities to defend the great leader's revolutionary
ideas consistantly from all opportunist ideological trends.
At that time, all forms of opportunism that had appeared
in the international communist movement did quite a bit

full play, until they win the final victory in the revolution.
The, triumphant advance and development of the revol-
ution and construction is ensured only by the struggle of the
masses of the people who are equipped with revolutionary
ideas.
Kim Jong II taught that the role of ideology is enhanced
unceasingly in keeping with the progress of the revolutionary
movement and increases to the greatest extent in the revo-

lutionary struggle for socialism and communism in parti-
cular.
This theory on thinking represents an original conception
which throws light overall theoretical and practical problems
concerning ideology and conciousness. And it furnishes a
powerful ideological and theoretical weapon which a
working-class party and state should consistently hold fast to
during the whole period of building socialism and commun-
ism to step up the revolution and construction by constantly
enhancing the role of ideology and consciousness and to
prepare people into communist revolutionaries.
Regarding the establishment of an outlook on the leader
as a matter of great importance in solving the problems of
ideology and consciousness, as a matter of principle in
establishing the monolithic ideological system of the Party,
Kim Jong II correctly led the work to establish a re-
volutionary outlook on the leader among the Party member-
ship and working people.
The revolutionary outlook on the leader constitutes the
idea of absolutizing the leader and revering him uncondition-
ally. Therefore, profound fidelity to the leader is indis-
pensable for the firm establishment of an revolutionary
outlook on the leader.
Kim Jong II saw to it that Party members and working
people were encouraged to have a broad and profound
knowledge of the greatness of the great leader and of the
immortal exploits he had accomplished for the country and
people, so as to make them revere the great leader from the
bottom of their hearts, cherishing an infinite honour and
national pride in holding him in high esteem.
Along with this, he set up an orderly system of propagat-
ing the great leader's teachings, so that the entire Party

 would form the habit of studying the leader's teachings and
their embodiment, the Party's line and policy.
In order to supply Party members and working people
with the great leader's works more which would serve as
materials for the study of the Party's monolithic ideology,
Kim Jong II took a radical step to publish and disseminate
the great leader's immortal classic works on a large scale.
At the same time, he made sure that the "room for the
study of the revolutionary history of Comrade Kim II Sung"
were built as the centre of education in the monolithic
ideology. For those study rooms to fulfil their such mission,
Kim Jong II said, they should be furnished with basic study
materials easy for anybody to understand. So saying, he
proposed editing pictorial records of the great leader's
revolutionary history and gave energetic guidance in compi-
ling new pictorial records on the leader's greatness in an all-
round way.
In March 1968 he gave valuable instructions for the
editing of new pictorial records. In addition he found out the
manuscripts of the works written by the great leader and
brought them to their reproduction site, where he gave
concrete directions so that they were properly printed for the
pictorial recording boards.
This energetic guidance of his resulted in respectfully
furnishing the "room for the study of the revolutionary history
of Comrade Kim II Sung" with new pictorial records. And
these study rooms were converted into a powerful centre for
education in the Party's monolithic ideology, enabling the Party
members and working people to study and deeply grasp the
great leader's immortal Juche idea, his glorious revolutionary
history and his revolutionary achievements.
With the vigorous struggle to establish a revolutionary

outlook on the leader under the energetic guidance of
Kim Jong II, fidelity to the great leader became firmer thfcn
ever among the Party members and working people, and a
new turn took place in the work of consolidating the great
leader's monolithic leadership in every way.
Kim Jong Π by all means strengthened the unity and
cohesion of the Party centering on the great leader.
Ever since the first days when he set out for his re-
volutionary activities in his early years, Kim Jong II exerted
every possible effort to safeguard the unity and cohesion of
the Party like the apple of the eye and cement it still further.
About the time of the historic 15th Plenary Meeting of the
4th Central Committee of the Party in May 1967 in particular,
he conducted dynamic activities to this end.
In those days, as the revolution and construction de-
veloped in depth, US imperialism further intensified its
manoeuvres for aggression and war, and the opportunist
ideological trends of all hues infiltrated from outside, the
bourgeois and revisionist element lurking in the Party began
their activities.
They distorted our Party's lines and policies, vilified its
glorious revolutionary traditions and attempted to spread all
kinds of anti-Party, counter-revolutionary ideas within the
Party.
It was none other than Kim Jong II who saw most
sharply through the true colours and counter-revolutionary
nature of the bourgeois and revisionist elements and waged an
uncompromising struggle against them.
In the course of his repeated inspection of ministries,
central organs and provincial Party organizations he clearly
knew that the counter-revolutionary schemes of the bour-
geois and revisionist elements had reached a very grave stage.

 And he launched an energetic struggle to expose and smash
them.
While guiding the Party and state work, he brought to
light the vicious manoeuvres of the bourgeois and revisionist
elements which were distorting the Party's line and policy in
their implementation, and advised those cadres who, unable
to discern their machinations, were following them blindly, to
conduct all work with a penetrating political judgement.
In June 1966 and January 1967, moreover, when he was
inspecting the work in the Korean Central Broadcasting
Committee and in the sectors of the press and literature and
art, he learned the fact that the anti-Party, counter-
revolutionary elements were spreading alien ideas through
publications and broadcasting and literary and artistic works.
And he helped heighten the political and class awareness of
those working in the above-mentioned fields, so that they
could launch a vehement struggle against the slightest man-
ifestations detrimental to our Party's ideology.
While reasoningParty members and cadres into maintain-
ing the revolutionary stand of the Party, Kim Jong II carried
on positive activities to ascertain the true colours of the anti-
Party, counter-revolutionary elements.
He met officials to have a talk and examined materials and
archives in different fields to find out scientific evidences of
the criminal acts of the anti-Party, counter-revolutionary
elements. Thus he gave evident proof that their counter-
revolutionary nature was found in their attempts to disparage
the high authority and prestige of the great leader.
By relying on such concrete materials, he led the 15th
Plenary Meeting of the 4th Central Committee of the
Workers' Party of Korea to turn it into a meeting to expose
and shatter the bourgeis and revisionist elements decisively.

He saw to it that the Plenary Meeting would Strike a
determined blow at the anti-Party, counter-revolutionary
elements by giving full light on their evil influence upon the
different spheres of the revolution and construction covering
the Party work, the economy, the work for national reunifi-
cation and foreign affairs and on their criminal attempt to
split the revolutionary forces of our Party.
In this way the 15th Plenary Meeting of the 4th Central
Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea marked a decisive
turning-point in further cementing the unity and cohesion of
the Party centering on the great leader and in establishing the
monolithic ideological system within the Party and in the
whole society.
Under the wise guidance of Kim Jong II, after the 15th
Plenary Meeting of the 4th Central Committee of the Party,
the whole Party and all society were imbued fully with the
great leader's revolutionary ideas, the unity and cohesion of
the Party and the people, with the leader as the centre, were
cemented and the revolution and construction were pushed
ahead successfully under the monolithic leadership of the
great leader.
Kim Jong II made a breakthrough in the sector of
literature and art.
Attaching an importance to literature and art from early
days, he planned to open a new chapter in their history. In the
1960s he brought about an unprecedented change in literature
and art.
He pointed out: "We must by all means make a revolution in
literature and art in order to build the Juche-oriented literature
and art which would meet the requirements of the times."
Literary and artistic revolution was an urgent demand for
the development of our era and revolution.

 In those days the ideological and cultural infiltration of
imperialism and the manoeuvrings of the revisionists to distort
the socialist principle of literary and artistic creation were
becoming serious: the bourgeois and revisionist ideological
venom was planted deep in the minds of writers and artists. As a
result, the literary and artistic sphere which should have played
leading role on the Party's ideological front failed to keep
abreast with the development of the revolution.
Kim Jong II, who was well aware of the demand of the
revolutionary development in our times, undertook in person
the weighty and important task of building Juche-oriented
literature and art.
He clarified the essence and content of literary and artistic
revolution in a fresh light.
He pointed out:
"The revolution in literature and art is a deep-going class
struggle in the ideological and cultural field to break down
outdated things in all spheres of content, form and the system
and method of creation and to build the new Juche-based
literature and art."
He also propounded the theory on the traditions of
revolutionary literature and art and the principles to be
maintained in the literary and artistic revolution.
He taught that in order to successfully carry on the
revolution in literature and art, everything should be solved
taking the great Juche idea as its sole guideline to meet the
requirements of Juche, and the immortal classic masterpieces
which had been written by the great leader during the anti-
Japanese revolutionary struggle be made into different genres
of literature and art, so as to defend, inherit and develop the
glorious traditions of revolutionary literature and art.
Saying that efforts should be concentrated on cinema art

to make a breakthrough in the literary and artistic revolution
and its successes be generalized in the whole range of
literature and art, he made clear that this was the basic
principle to be maintained in making the revolution in
literature and art.
He pointed out:
"Making a breakthrough by devoting efforts to cinema
art and generalizing its success all over literature and art is the
basic principle we must hold fast to in revolution for literature
and art."
Cinema art is a synthetic art in which all the literary and
artistic fields—literature, production, filming, actor's acting, fine
arts, music, etc.—are combined organically.
Accordingly, developing it on a priority basis is a solid
guarantee for an overall progress in the other literary and artistic
fields.
With a view to bringing about a revolutionary change in the
field of cinema art Kim Jorig Π directed preferential efforts on
establishing the monolithic ideological system of the Party firmly
among cinema artists and on revolutionizing and working-
dassizing them.
He solidly built up Party organizations in the field of cinema
art and set up an orderly system for them to communicate and
study the great leader's teachings, thereby arming the cinema
artistes firmly with the Juche-oriented literary and artistic
thoughts and policies.
Moreover, he put foward an original policy for turning the
process of creation into that of revolutionization and
working-classization, and helped writers and artistes to
accelerate their revolutionization in creative practice.
The result was that the collective of the cinema artists grew
up into our Party's dependable cinema artists firmly prepared

Kim Jong II gave wise guidance so that a radical change
might be brought about in film production.
He vigorously pushed ahead with the work of making movies
of the immortal classic masterpieces which had been written by
the great leader himself during the anti-Japanese revolutionary
struggle.
He made public varieties of classic works titled "Some
Problems Arising in the Creation of Great Works", "On the
Ideological and Artistic Characteristics of the Immortal
Classic Masterpiece The Fate of a Self-Defence Corps Man'"
and many others in which he gave perfect answers to the
theoretical and practical problems arising in the Work of
picturizing the immortal masterpieces.
Along with this, he personally helped found the
Paekdusan Production in 1967 and, with this as a creative
centre, energetically guided the work of making movie of the
immortal classic masterpieces written by the great leader.
As a result, the picturiang of "Sea of Hood", an immortal
masterpiece which had been written by the great leader himself
braving through the flames of the anti-Japanese revolutionary
struggle was realized splendidly, and "The Fate of a Self-Defence
Corps Man", "The Flower Girl" and other masterpieces of
monumental significance came to reappear on our screens today
after an interval of several decades.
In those days when the immortal classics were being made
into movies Kim Jong II always found himself among the
artistes and, with his unexcelled wisdom and outstanding
artistic vision, provided them with scientific answers to all
problems arising in creative practice — production, acting,
music, fine arts, shooting and recording, etc: He went even to

benevolent affection.
It happened when Kim Jong II was guiding the picturiz-
ing of the immortal classic "The Fate of a Self-Defence Corps
Man" in February 1970.
After he had sent the film makers crew off to the location
site, he looked out of the window at dead of night with a
blizzard raging. He was so anxious to know if the crew who
had left by train were eating hot properly in that cold that he
personally telephoned an intermediate station and asked it to
help them get to their destination safely.
The next day, as he was still uneasy about them, he sent for
cinema actors and producers who were to leave by train on the
day and, in company with them flew to the location site by
helicopter.
No sooner had he got to the spot than he kindly asked
provincial officials to take good care of the health and dietary
life of the artists, let alone arrangements for their work.
As the short winter day declined, temperature fell sud-
denly, followed by a rush of severe cold in the north.
Nevertheless, denying himself even a short rest,
Kim Jong II flew back home.
The cinema artists were reluctant to get away from the
helicopter, but he urged them to leave, lest they should catch
cold, expecting to see them all again in Pyongyang after
successfully finishing the location in good health.
Inspired by his boundless affection, the cinema artists
completed the shooting, which would otherwise have taken
them one full year, in only 40 days, thus affording a good
example of revolutionary film production.
With the brilliant accomplishment of the historical cause
of making a movies of the immortal classics and on the basis

 of its successes, Kim Jong Π gave wise guidance so that fresh
upsurge took place in the production of other films.
In his June 1970 talk with writers and producers "Let Us
Create More Revolutionary Films Which Reflect the Reality
Under Socialism", he put forward a very important task for
producing many more films of socialist realism and specified
questions of principle arising in its realization, and the ways
and means to solve them.
In the talk he taught that writers and artists should raise
urgent and meaningful questions in the revolutionization and
working-classization of people and find their correct sol-
utions and describe in depth the process of revolutionizing the
workers, farmers and other working people.
Then he referred to the need for them to embody the spirit
of the times properly in their literary and art works and give
full play to their originality in creating varied and charac-
teristic works which would reflect the impressive realities of
our country rushing ahead in the spirit of Chollima, and the
worthwhile lives of our working people.
The cinema artistes, fully sympathizing with dear
Comrade Kim Jong Il's ideas and intentions, rose up in
creating films based on the realities under socialism.
This brought about a great upsurge in their film
production.
Thanks to dear Comrade Kim Jong II who had brilli-
antly accomplished the work of picturizing the great leader's
immortal classics, effecting fresh upsurge in the production of
revolutionary films, a breakthrough was made to open the
road of making the revolution in the whole range of literature
and art.

At the beginning of the 1970s our revolution entered upon
a new stage of development.
Under the wise leadership of the great leader and dear
Comrade Kim Jong Π the Party's monolithic ideological
system was thoroughly established in the whole Party and
society, the historic task of socialist industrialization ac-

become as strong as steel.
The revolutionary advance of the south Korean people
opposing US imperialism and its cat's-paws gained momen-
tum more than ever and the international status of our
country was enhanced further still.
Our Party and people were faced with the weighty yet
difficult task of vigorously promoting the revolution and
construction on the basis of the successes already gained so as
to move up the complete victory of socialism, speed up the
revolution in south Korea and the national reunification and
to develop the world revolution still more.
For the successful fulfillment of the above-mentioned
tasks, it was necessary, first of all, to find a correct solution to
the problem of taking over, for generations to come, the
revolutionary cause of Juche started by the great leader.
The fundamental question that arises in succeeding to the

Kim Jong II pointed out: "Who wall and how to take
over the revolutionary cause initiated by a leader is a question
of great importance which affects the future destiny of the
revolution."
Through their life and struggle the greatness and sagacity
of Kim Jong II had long since been brought home to our
Party and people, who had held him in boundless respect and
adoration.
Kim Jong II is the distinguished leader of our Party and
people who has perfectly personified all the qualities and
qualifications of the great heir to the revolutionary cause of
the great leader.
With infinite loyalty to the great leader Comrade
Kim II Sung, Kim Jong II had put forward a number of
superb conceptions and theories in which he developed the
great leader's revolutionary thoughts in depth. He
strengthened the Party into an impregnable one and brought
about a radical change in the revolution and construction.
He had accomplished brilliant feats in increasing the
economic power and the defence capacity of our country.
A great revolutionary change was brought about in the
sectors of literature and art in a matter of few years under his
guidance.
Kim Jong II had energetically led the struggle to ac-
celerate the south Korean revolution and further promote the
world revolution, thereby making a great contribution to
moving up the victory in the world revolution as well as the
nation-wide victory of our revolution.
In those historical days our Party and people had been
instilled with the adamant conviction that they would be able

to take over the Juche-oriented revolutionary cause gener-
ation after generation and carry it to completion with flying
colours and enjoy infinite happiness and glory only when they
were given the wise leadership of Kim Jong II, holding him
in high esteem.
It had been the unanimous will and desire of our Party and
people to hold Kim Jong II in high regards as the great
successor to the great leader's revolutionary cause.
At last their such desire was realized: they could have
Kim Jong II as the peerless heir to the great leader, as their
illustrious leader.
By highly honouring Kim Jong II as the great heir to the
cause of Juche, the fundamental question which is decisive of
the fate of our Party and revolution has been solved
brilliantly.
By holding him in high esteem in the van of the revolution,
our people have come to continue the revolutionary onward
march to defend the great leader Comrade Kim II Sung's
thoughts firmly, safeguard the unity and cohesion of the
revolutionary ranks and carry socialist construction through

Trusted deeply by the Party and people, Kim Jong II, in
his endeavour to fulfil the lofty mission he had assumed
before the era and revolution, energetically pushed ahead
with the work of setting up a system of Party's leadership.
Establishing the leadership system of the Party is the
decisive guarantee for advancing our revolution as intended
by the great leader and leading it to victory.
With the firm establishment of the Party's leadership
system under the wise guidance of Kim Jong II, the unity
and cohesion behind the great leader was cemented more than
ever, fresh change took place in the work of the Party, state,

economic and cultural organs and a solid guarantee for
inheriting and consummating the Juche-oriented revo-
lutionary cause was secured.
Kim Jong II directed deep attention to carrying out the
three major tasks of the technical revolution which had been
proposed by the great leader at the Party's 5th Congress, and
led them dynamically.
Kim Jong II said that he made up his mind to follow the
great leader's teaching and to take over and carry out the
revolutionary cause of human emancipation which aimed at
freeing our people from arduous and burdensome work for
ever.
Kim Jong II put his heart and soul into the overall
introduction of automation in the industrial domain with a
view to narrowing down the distinction between heavy and
light labour and eliminating heat-affected and harmful
labour, which was one of the three major tasks of the technical
revolution.
Kim Jong II taught that the fundamental principle to be
maintained in the overall automation was to solve all
problems arising in automation, making much of people.
He started his guidance for the overall automation with
setting an example at the Hwanghae Iron Works.
One day in the latter part of January 1973 when he was
receiving a report on the arrangements the officials had so far
made for automation, Kim Jong II said about the first object
of automation which they had failed to decide as yet: "We
must equip the Hwanghae Iron Works well, so as to make it a
model for automation. We must ensure that its workers, who
are the hard cores of our Party, should first light the beacon of
automation held up by the Party Central Committee."
He sent a group of technicians to the Hwanghae Iron

Works and took concrete measures at the Political Commit-
tee of the Party Central Committee in March 1973 to speed up
the automation project in the Works and to extend all Party
and all state support to it.
He gave very important teachings on more than one
hundred occasions and sent the apparatus and elements and
equipment for automation on over thirty occasions.
Encouraged by the energetic guidance and great solicitude
of Kim Jong II the workers of the Hwanghae Iron Works
displayed their revolutionary spirit of self-reliance. The result
was that the introduction into the steel shop of televisions and
wireless telephones was completed in a single week, the
project of introducing the system of remote control in the
sifting centre was made only in a month and the remote
control project was accomplished at the May 14 shop in a
short span of fourty days.
Thus the workers were freed from heat-affected and
harmful work and markedly increased production even while
saving a great deal of manpower.
Kim Jong II pushed it ahead dynamically to generalize
the achievement and experience gained in automating the
Hwanghae Iron Works throughout the country.
He took step so that arrangements for automation were
made with foresight at the Kangson Steel and Iron Complex,
the February 8 Cement Factory and other major factories and
enterprises in all parts of the country. And in December 1973
he got Party secretaries and leaders of the three-revolution
teams at factories and enterprises to learn the experience of
the Hwanghae Iron Works. Then he sent technicians and
designers who had been experienced in automation to major
factories and enterprises and provided them with various
kinds of automation equipment and elements, blueprints and

 accessories. Along with this he ensured that the Party
newspaper and the Broadcasting Station and other
propaganda-agitation media conducted active political work
to step up the automation powerfully on the principle of self-
reliance.
This is how the Kim Chaek Iron Complex, the Chollima
Steel Complex, the Songjin Steel Works, the February 8
Cement Factory and many other factories and enterprises
introduced industrial televisions and remote control system in
their production processes and a powerful campaign for all-
round automation was launched in our country.
Kim Jong II was deeply concerned also with the com-
prehensive mechanization of difficult and labour-consuming
work.
He led collieries and ore mines to make their mining
machines and conveyors large and quick operating and
guided the timber industry to mechanize its operations
vigorously, so as to free the lumberers from burdensome
work. At the same time, he saw that the latest machinery and
technical means were used in large quantities in construction
work so that the level of mechanization was brought on to a
higher plane.
The energetic guidance conducted by Kim Jong II re-
sulted in the successful solution of the problem of eliminating
the heat-affected and harmful work and narrowing down the
distinction between heavy and light labour and in laying the
firmer material and technical foundation enough to achieve
human emancipation.
Kim Jong II made untiring efforts to push ahead the
technical revolution in the countryside for the purpose of
diminishing the distinction between agricultural and indus-
trial work.

To this end, he made certain that the production of
tractors and lorries was increased, and many more modern
farm machines including trailers, rice-transplanting machines
and threshers were produced and supplied, so as to speed up
the comprehensive mechanization of the rural economy
vigorously.
Moreover, he led Chongsan-ri to set an example in
comprehensive farm mechanization and helped publicize its
results all over the country.
Every time up-to-date farm machines were manufactured
Kim Jong II sent them to Chongsan-ri farmers first and
assigned its managerial workers with a concrete task to
acquire a technical know-how for skillful operation of the
modern farming machines.
Thanks to his warm care, Chongsan-ri came to make a
success in comprehensive mechanization and the whole
country followed its example.
Kim Jong II paid deep attention to enhancing the role of
tractor operators with the aim of stepping up the rural
mechanization.
It happened on March 9, 1972. Towards dusk
Kim Jong II, who was hurrying with his guidance tour, came
across tractor operators of the Okhyon Co-op Farm.
Unceremoniously, he sat down at the edge of a ridge of a
non-paddy field and, unwrapping a bundle containing con-
fectionery, had a kind-hearted talk with them.
After making detailed inquiries into the farming and the
utility of tractors in their co-op farm, he said that the Party
was going to make all farm work easier and more joyful by
realizing comprehensive mechanization and chemicalization
in the rural technical revolution. Then he gave valuable
teachings for the tractor operators to enhance their role.

 Kim Jong II visited many rural communities in South
and North Hwanghae Provinces, South Pyongan Province
and many other provincial areas and pushed ahead a vigorous
struggle to expedite the chemicalization of the rural economy.
It was under his dynamic guidance and warm care that
remarkable changes were taking place in narrowing down the
distinction between agricultural and industrial labour and the
work went on successfully to free the farmers from hard
labour.
Kim Jong II spared no efforts to promote the technical
revolution which aimed at freeing women from the heavy
burden of household chores.
In order to carry out the great "leader's teaching for
making revolutions in producing food and in processing he
took care that the production of refrigerators and washing
machines for home use and many other highly efficient
kitchen utensils was increased.
And he saw to it that each province had corn-processing,
and food-processing factories and modernized the foodstuff
production.
As the overall automation made headway, and big
successes were tegistered in the efforts to speed up the three
major tasks of technical revolution under his wise guidance,
the working people became able to free themselves from
burdensome work and enjoy more independent and creative
lives.
Kim Jong II bent his energy on the work to usher in the
golden age of socialist literature and art. To do this, it was
necessary to carry through the literary and art policy set forth
by the 5th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea and to
expedite the literary and art revolution which had started in
the 1960s.

Drawing on the success and experience gained in ϋοέ cour-
se of cinematic revolution and on his already matured
conception, he proposed the policy of making a revolution in
opera.
He said that as the revolution in the cinema domain, was
made, so a great revolution should be made for breaking
down all the outdated things.
He defined the modernization and popularization of
opera art based on the revolutionary content and national
form as the main task for revolution in opera and threw an
original light on the Juche principle of creation of a new type
of opera of our fashion.
He directed that songs, the basic medium of opera
expression, should be arranged in verses, Pangchang be
introduced widely, dancing be combined closely to drama and
an automated three-dimentional stage which would const-
antly change in keeping with the dramatic evolution be
created.
Kim Jong II, in an endeavour to create a revolutionary
opera of our fashion, gave energetic guidance to the creation
of opera "The Sea of Blood", based on the immortal classic
"The Sea of Blood" written by the great leader during the
anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle.
In the whole course of its creation which began with the
writing of the libretto and music he had always been found
among the artistes.
Mingling with the artists he spared nothing for the
completion of the opera, working through the nights for
many days, denying himself rest and sleep.
As a result, it took no more than a month to bring the
immortal classic "The Sea of Blood" on the stage, and the

revolutionary opera "The Sea of Blood" was made public in
July 1971.
Its creation marked a turning point, a starting point in
breaking down the outworn framework and in originating a
"Sea of Hood" type opera.
In the wake of the completion of the revolutionary opera
"The Sea of Blood", Kim Jong II continued his energetic
guidance in creating the revolutionary operas "A True
Daughter of the Party", "Tell the Story, Forest," "The
Flower Girl" and "Song of Mt, Kumgang".
The revolutionary opera "The Flower Girl" is a monu-
mental masterpiece which is at the zenith of the "Sea of
Blood"-type revolutionary opera. , mental music were developed in conformity with the demand
By creating this revolutionary opera the opera revolution
which Kim Jong II had long conceived and bent his heart
and soul on has been accomplished brilliantly.
Kim Jong II also gave wise guidance so as to help bring
about revolution in literature.
With a view to bringing about a turn in the creation of
literary works, he saw that revolutionary literary works
should be written to describe die immortal revolutionary
history of the great leader and his lofty character and that the
immortal classic masterpieces which had been written by him
during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle were made
into fiction. In addition he made certain that excellent literary
works were written making a profound portrayal of a Juche-
type, communistic man of our era.
A number of literary works were written in this course,
including long stories "Revolutionary Aurora" and "The
Year 1932", which belong to a cycle of novels—Immortal
History—which made a splendid portrayal of the glorious

brilliant revolutionary history of the great leader. '
Kim Jong II conducted wise guidance in the realm of
musical art to have a fresh revolutionary change.
He led the musicians and artists to create such musical art
as to reflect what our people want, think and feel.
Clearly indicating the basic direction in which our Juche-
oriented popular music should develop, he advanced original
theories on numerous problems which involved giving proper
life to our intrinsic national rhythms to make them underlie
the musical evolution, having the art of music become
revolutionary and popular and making all songs and music
become renowned.
Also, he saw to it that the orchestra and other instru-
of the times and the thoughts and feelings of the people and
that the Juche-oriented orchestra was created by combining
national instruments with European ones.
Such days went by and in this while unabated efforts were
also made to search for and work out and perfect various
original forms of music.
Many pieces of music and dance epics were created thanks
to the prudent guidance of Kim Jong II.
The art of dancing has also assumed a revolutionary and
popular character which conforms to national peculiarities.
Kim Jong II also brought about a revolution in the
dramatic art in the course of his on-the-spot-guidance in the
Work of adapting for the stage a revolutionary play
"Mountain Shrine", an immortal masterpiece which was
created by the great leader in the period of the anti-Japanese
revolutionary struggle.
In the field of fine arts, too, Kim Jong II made a point of
developing them with the main emphasis on the Korean

 painting into a beautiful and refined form of art and of
making overall improvement in different kinds and forms of
fine arts.
As to the acrobatics, Kim Jong II clarified that the basic
direction for the development of Juche-oriented acrobatics is
in the proper combination of its socialist content with the
national form, developing acrobatics onto a higher plane in
that direction.
Kim Jong fl also gave guidance to develop the mass-
based literature and art.
As a result, mass-based artistic activities—creative writing,
art performance, mobile propaganda team activities, etc—
came to spread widely among workers, fanners, soldiers,
youths and students, producing a great many reserves of
talented writers and artists from among the masses of the
people.
Our country greeted the golden age of literature and art:
literature and art have become a truly revolutionary and
popular ones which would contribute greatly to the develop-
ment of the world's literature and art.
Drawing on the success and experience he had gained in
the literary and artistic revolution, Kim Jong U made public
an immortal classic treatise "The Theory of Cinema Art" in
April 1973.
This treatise represents a library of Juche theories on,
literature and art.
In it he put forward a theory on the communistic
humanics.
Kim Jong II pointed out:
"The humanics we need is a literature which places stress
on the matter of Chajusong, the matter of an independent
human being, and creates the paragon of a real man of a new

age so as to contribute to transforming the whole society to
meet the requirements of Juche."
He also clarified the basic requirement of the communist
humanics and the methods of expression.
He taught that in dealing with a man's question in the
works main stress should be laid on the question of his
political integrity and on its solution and that the masses of
the people should be described with main emphasis and
communist man coming from among the people should be put
up as a model.
And he stressed the need to give a concrete life-like
portrayal of man and describe a rich and diversified life in
detail.
Kim Jong II pointed out:
"Our literature should be a communistic humanics which
regards the masses of people as the most powerful, beautiful
and noble beings and serves them."
A truly communistic humanics, he stated, finds its original
nature in the fact that it raises the question of Chajusong, the
question of an independent man, and create the paragon of a
man in the age of Juche, thereby contributing to transforming
the whole of society in conformity with the Juche idea.
With the clarification of the essence of the humanics, and
of the ways of depicting man and of the methods of expressing
him, our literature and art have become able to represent a
new-type man, requied by the Juche era, the paragon of a man
infinitely loyal to the Party and the leader, so as to speed up
the revolutionization of the masses of the people and rouse
them powerfully to the building of socialism and communism.
Kim Jong II clarified a theory on creation with the
theory on the seed as its core.
The seed is, he made clear, the basic nucleus which defines

the content of a literary and artistic work, underlies the
description and secures its life. And he gave scientific
exposition of the essence and function of the seed, the
principle of its selection and the ways and means of
expression.
Besides, he made an overall clarification of the basic
principle arising in the other realms of art covering produc-
tion, acting, filming, fine arts and music and in the creation
and guidance of literary art. and he proposed concrete
methods for their implementation.
The immortal classic treatise "The Theory of Cinema
Art" serves a guideline of tremendous importance in the
building of communist literature and art whose truthfulness
and vitality have been substantiated in the historical course of
the literary and artistic revolution which has ushered in the
golden age of literature and art in our country.
Kim Jong II gave wise guidance to the struggle to
facilitate the north-south dialogue and to check and frustrate
the plot of the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet
clique to make "two Koreas".
In the 1970s the internal and. external situation of our
country took a favourable turn for our people's struggle to
reunify the country.
Our internal revolutionary forces became stronger than
ever before, and the ranks of supporters and sympathizers
with our revolution and the cause of national reunification
were increasing rapidly in many countries all over the world.
On the other hand, the US imperialists and the south
Korean puppet clique were further isolated internally and
externally and driven into an irretrievable predicament.
Precisely at this juncture, the great leader, in his historic
August 6, 1971 speech, declared a policy for the wide-range

north-south negotiation. This compelled the· south Korean
puppet clique to be drawn into the negotiation. In May 1972
he personally received the delegate of die south Korean side to
the north-south high-level political talks and defined the three
principles—independence, peaceful reunification and great
national unity—as the basic programme for national
reunification.
Kim Jong II set forth the excellent strategic and tactical
task for the implementation of the national reunification
program defined by the great leader and energetically led the
struggle to carry them out.
He exerted a great deal of energy first of all to make the
great leader's three principles of national reunification the
sole reunification programme common to the nation.
He gave detailed directions so that a joint statement could
be drawn up on the basis of the three principles for national
reunification. And he took care that patient work was done to
make the south Korean side accept our draft statement. This
resulted hi the July 4,1972 announcement of the north-south
joint statement whose main content consisted of the three
principles—independence, peaceful reunification,: great
national unity—as clarified by the great leader.
Kim Jong II directed deep attention to ensuring success
in the talks between the Red Cross organizations of the north
and south and in the high-level political talks which aimed at
implementing the three principles for national reunification.
It was under the energetic guidance of Kim Jong II that
the barriers which had been standing between north and
south as long as 27 years gave way and a new phase opened in
the implementation of the policy for broad negotiations
between north and south.
In the course of the north-south dialogue our united forces

grew in strength; peoples of the whole world voiced their
undivided support and welcome for our Party's policy of
reunifying the nation independently; and the south Korean
puppet clique were so isolated at home and abroad that they
found themselves in a serious crisis.
As the case stood, the south Korean puppet clique,
instigated by US imperialism, made frantic efforts behind
the screen of the north-south dialogue to rig up "two
Koreas"* and in June 1973 they finally proclaimed to the
world that they would perpetuate the country's division.
In order to cope with the prevailing difficult situation, the
great leader Comrade Kim II Sung made his historic speech
on June 23, 1973.
In the speech the great leader proposed the five-point
policy for national reunification, the content of which is: to
remove military confrontation and ease tensions between the
north and south, to bring about multilateral collaboration
and interchange between the two parts, convene the Great
National Congress composed of representatives of people of
all levels and political parties and social organizations in the
north and south, institute north-south Confederation under
the single name of the Confederal Republic of Koryo and
enter the UN under that name.
Kim Jong II organized and mobilized the entire people in
the struggle to cany this policy into effect.
He ensured that mass meetings were held on a large scale
to voice support for the five-point policy of national reunifi-
cation set forth by the great leader, denounce the "two
Koreas" plot of the US imperialists and the south Korean
puppet clique and to support and encourage the south
Korean people in their anti-US, national salvation struggle.
At the same time, he had the 59th Enlarged Session of the

Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the
Reunification of the Fatherland issue an appeal to the south
Korean people and overseas compatriots proposing the
earliest convocation of the Great National Congress. Thus he
took positive steps to carry the five-point policy into practice.
And so the Japan-resident Korean citizens and other
overseas Korean compatriots, let alone the south Korean
people, took an active part in the struggle for national
reunification, whereas the US imperialists and Pak Jung Hui
puppet clique were more and more isolated as the days went
by.
Kim Jong II also paid deep attention to turning the
international circumstances in favour of Korea's
reunification.
He ensured that the three principles and five-point policy
set by the great leader for national reunification were made
widely known abroad and the public opinion was so created
on a broad international scale as to denounce the plot of US
imperialism and its stooges for "two Koreas" and support our
Party's reunification policy.
Along with this, he made a point of setting up our Mission
in the UN in the heart of New York, the imperialists' den, so
that more positive external activities were conducted to move
up the national reunification by using the UN as the theatre of
struggle. The result was that the world public gave more
support and encouragement to our national reunification.
The Fourth Summit Conference of the Non-Aligned
Countries held in September 1973 and many other inter-
national gatherings and meetings of international organiz-
ations adopted declarations and resolutions one after another
expressing their positive support for the three principles and
five-point policy for national reunification. The Twenty

Eighth Session of the UN General Assembly held in October
1973 welcomed the three principles for national reunification
and adopted a resolution on immediate dissolution of the
"UN Commission for Unification and Rehabilitation of
Korea", which was an apparatus for US imperialism to
interfere in the internal affairs of our country.

Kim Jong II made an in-depth analysis of the subjective
and objective conditions and the matured demand before he
carried on ideological and theoretical activities energetically.
He paved a road for a historic onward march aimed at
embodying the great leader's revolutionary ideas, so that our
revolution could be developed on to a higher plane.
On February 19,1974 he proposed a new programme for
modelling the whole society on the Juche idea.
As he announced this programme, the ultimate goal of our
Party which is going to build a communist society and the
fundamental ways and means to attain it were made clear.
The programme of imbuing the whole society with the
Juche idea is a great programme which throws light on the
road for our revolution to march along.
In our country, the democratic revolution and the socialist
revolution were carried to victory. And today our revolution

 has reached such a high stage of development that the
complete victory of socialism and the building of communism
have become the order of the day.
In this historical course the socialist system free from
exploitation and oppression has been established, the ma-
terial and technical foundations of socialism laid firmly and
the firm unity and cohesion of our people around the Party
and the leader with one ideology and purpose have gained
tremendous strength. As a result, the social conditions under
which it will be possible to model all society on the Juche idea
have ripened.
Hie announcement by Kim Jong H of such programme
is the reflection of this matured demand for our social
development. Accordingly, it has provided our people with a
definite goal and method of struggle which enable them to
fight indefatigably generation after generation until the
revolutionary cause of Juche is carried out to completion.
Kim Jong II defined the modelling of all society on the
Juche idea as a prerequisite for transforming the whole of
society in line with the Juche idea and gave energetic guidance
so that fresh change might be brought about in Party building
and Party work.
Imbuing the whole Party with Juche idea means, in the
final analysis, developing our Party into a party in which the
Juche idea has been realized both in its composition and in its
manner of activity.
Kim Jong Π gave an overall explanation of the tasks
confronting the Party in its work and activity for imbuing the
whole Party with Juche idea.
They involve the thorough establishment of the monolit-
hic ideological system and unitary system of guidance, the
building up of our Party and revolutionary ranks politically

and ideologically, the strengthening of Party's leadership over
the socialist economic construction, and the improving of the
system and method of Party work, etc.
Kim Jong II made sure that the monolithic ideological
system was thoroughly established throughout the Party.
Along with this, he made a point of establishing strict
revolutionary discipline to cany out the great leader's
teachings and the Party's policies unconditionally.
To this end, he ensured that the great leader's teachings
and the Party's policies were promptly communicated and
brought home to the cadres and'Party members so as to help
study them deeply before they would strive to carry them out.
Also, Kim Jong II gave wise guidance to building up the
Party ranks firmly.
In order to reinforce the Party ranks organizationally and
ideologically he made it imperative for the Party to make
more vigorous efforts to equip the Party members with the
Juche-based revolutionary world outlook and to establish a
revolutionary tone of organizational life and a strict discipline
within it, so that they might be steeled in a revolutionary way.
And he saw to it that the ranks of cadres were built up with
excellent ones, on the principle of combining old, middle-aged
and young one properly, who were possessed of noble loyalty
to the great leader and the Party and prepared politically and
practically and that a well-ordained system of education for
cadres was set up to strengthen the work of bringing up the
reserve of cadres.
Along with this, he had the cadres and Party members to
participate in their Party life conscientiously with a correct
view of the Party organization and regularize it.
Under Kim Jong Il's wise guidance the Party ranks were
built up firmly and remarkable changes took place in the

 organized lives of the Party members and in their qualities.
Kim Jong II also gave wise directions in improving the
system and method of Party work.
First of aH, he led the Party organizations and officials to
direct their primary efforts oninner-Party work and establish
strict discipline and order to do it as provided for in the Party
Rules. At the same time, all Party functionaries were made to
go down below according to the established system and to
make it a rule for them to help in work at subordinate units.
In his classic works authored in January 1975 'On Some
Main Tasks To Be Carried Out in Party Work This Year" he
put forward a revolutionary policy for setting the fun-
ctionaries' work method right and dynamically led the
struggle to carry it out.
He took minute care so that all cadres would actively learn
from the great leader's method of works the work method of
the anti-Japanese guerrillas, which represented our Party's
traditional- work method, and do all work as it required.
As Kim Jong Η set out the policy of imbuing the whole
Party with Juche idea and vigorously sped up the work for its
realization, our Party has been brought on to a higher plane of
development and secured a solid guarantee for the re-
volutionary cause of Juche to be carried through to the end
admirably.
In order to build up the revolutionary ranks firmly
Kim Jong Π attached particular importance to conducting
efficient work with the masses of all strata.
Proper work with different sections of the masses was a
matter of great urgency and importance in view of the then
prevailing situation and the demands of the developing
revolution.
The reason was that if only this work was deepened
further still would it be possible to attain a success in the
training and remoulding of all members of society into
genuine communist revolutionaries and in the transforming
of the economy, culture and other domains in accordance
with the requirement of the Juche idea.
Furthermore, it posed a question of urgency in relation
with the situation which prevailed at that time. In those days
the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet clique were
clamouring for "confrontation with dialogue", "competition
with dialogue" and "co-existence with dialogue" to sow the
seed of hostility against the northern hah" of the Republic. On
the other hand, the US imperialists were increasing extens-
ively their aggressive armed forces in south Korea and
persistently committing provocative acts like the
"Panmunjom Incident" in an attempt to unleash another war
of aggression.
The then prevailing situation demanded that work with
the masses of all walks of life be intensified more than ever,
rallying them firmly around the Party.
Kim Jong II elucidated the general direction in the work
with the masses.
He taught that our Party's general direction in the work
with the masses was to be found in educating and remoulding
the masses of all walks of life and rallying all of them closely
around the great leader and the Party.
The general direction having been illumined by him, our
Party became able to conduct mass work concentrically
towards the definite goal.
He taught that in order to do effective work with the
masses the cadres should have a revolutionary mass outlook
to carry through the Party's mass line and at the same time
improve their method and style of work and conduct

substantial work one by one by formulating specific
methodology.
Kim Jong II forcefully pushed ahead the struggle to
improve and strengthen the work with the masses of all strata.
His primary attention was directed first of all to ensuring
proficient work with the working class, farmers and other
basic masses so as to consolidate the class position of the
revolution.
Particularly, for the qualitative building up of the ranks of
the workers in the key industry branches and in coal and ore
mines he sent there large numbers of ex-service men and
young people and took care that they were brought up to be
nuclear forces infinitely loyal to the great leader and the
Party.
Also, he saw that the bereaved families of those fallen in
action or killed by the enemy were given good education and
their role increased in the revolution and construction and
that they were reared in a prospective way through practical
work like cadre-training centres to be cadres, revolutionary
commanding personnel, for the Party, state and working
people's organizations.
Next, Kim Jong Π paid deep attention to the work of
educating and transforming the masses with complex socio-
political record and uniting them closely behind the Party.
He led the Party organizations to discard their erroneous
attitude of picking man's class origin only and appraise him
accurately by putting the main emphasis on his present
ideological leanings.
And he ensured that people were embraced, educated and
remoulded if they followed the Party sincerely no matter how
complex their social records and family grounds might be.
Moreover, he made a point of posting them in the right place

according to their devotion and capacity and treating them on
an equal footing.
He took care that any problems connected with those
complex masses and their sons and daughters, a problem
associated with the political life in particular, should be
prudently dealt with and settled.
It was with warm love for people that he took care of the
problem connected with their fate and led the Party officials
to work on the principle of benefiting the revolution.
A certain Party organization was going to take measures
for some hard-working people to be transferred to other place
because of their complex family backgrounds.
On learning of this fact, Kim Jong II wondered, how the
class origins and past records of those comrades who have so
far worked devotedly for the Party could suddenly turn out to
be the discreditable grounds today. So he sternly told the
Party officials to give a full consideration to the problems of
people before disposal.
Then he kindly advised: even those who have shortcom-
ings in their family backgrounds and lives should not be
treated rashly: the criminals ought to be taken in act
determinedly, but Party officials should believe in those who
are faithful to the Party and win them over; they must start
from the principle fundamentally beneficial to the revolution.
Listening to his advice, the officials deeply repented of
their failure to take a viewpoint beneficial to the revolution
and of their working narrow-mindedly. And they dearly
realized from what viewpoint and stand a Party official who
takes the responsibility for man's political integrity should
proceed with their work.
Kim Jong II saw that work with those people who came

done by those coming from south Korea and made a point of
training them through education and practice into able

returned from Japan should be posted in their right place and
made to take an active part in socio-political life and that they

as to help them devote all their strength and wisdom to the
building of socialism and the national reunification.
Thanks to the energetic guidance of Kim Jong II, the
masses of all sections came to entrust their all to the great
leader and the Party and our revolutionary ranks have
become ever victorious, invincible militant ranks.
Kim Jong D ensured that the role of the working people's
organizations was enhanced to unite broad sections of the
masses closely behind the Party.
He pointed out that since the Party guidance for the
working people's organizations had a bearing on the problem
of implementing the mass line of the Party, Party organiz-
ations should direct deep attention to the work of the working
people's organizations.
He arranged that the working people's organizations set
up a proper educational system and a strict order of reviewing
organizational life so as to strengthen ideological education
and organized life among their membership.
He was interested so deeply in the firm building up of the
hard core members' ranks, their cadre ranks in particular that
from 1976 he organized short courses and model lectures for
cadres in the League of Socialist Working Youth organiz-
ations throughout the country, a national meeting of chair-

men of the model primary Trade Union organizations, and
propaganda workers' meeting and short courses for the
cadres of the primary organizations of the Agricultural
\[ Working People's Union to improve the political and prac-
tical qualifications of the cadres in the working people's
organizations.
With the improvement and strengthening of the work of
those organizations to meet the requirements of our re-
volutionary development in which the transforming of all
society in accordance with the Juche idea came to the fore, the
working people's organizations have become able to fulfil
their missions and duties in a better way as mass education
organizations.
Kim Jong II pushed ahead a vigorous struggle to inherit
and develop the brilliant revolutionary traditions of our
Party.
The modelling of all society on Juche idea is the continuity
of the revolutionary cause of Juche blazed in the Paekdu
forest and its new higher stage. Therefore, it is essential for the
modelling the whole society after Juche idea to take over and
carry forward the revolutionary traditions which constitute
the historical root of the Party and the revolution, and the
bloodveins which keep them alive.
Kim Jong II taught that our Party's revolutionary tradi-
tions established by the leader were the long-enduring
cornerstone which enables our Party and revolution to
emerge victorious from all storms and that only when we
defended the revolutionary traditions of the Party firmly and
inherited and developed them brilliantly could we accomplish
the leader's revolutionary cause for generations to come.
The great leader's revolutionary cause can be accomplis-
hed brilliantly only through the inheritance and development

and immortal exploits of the great leader and to embody them

Particularly, the reality of our country where the gener-
ation of the revolution is being replaced makes it still more

Kim Jong II defined the revolutionary traditions es-
tablished by the great leader as the blood-vessels connecting
the generations of the revolution and regarded defending and
adhering to the revolutionary traditions and inheriting and
developing them as the fundamental question decisive of the
fate of our Party and revolution and so he exerted great efforts
to do so.
He led our Party to keep the purity of its revolutionary
traditions in its entirety before everything else.
In a working-class party there ought to be only one
tradition, the only tradition which has been established by an
outstanding leader who is the first to blaze the road to
revolution.
He got the content of the revolutionary traditions per-
vaded with nothing but the revolutionary wealth gained by
the great leader, allowing not a bit of alien things which were
not associated with it to be mixed.
He also took definite measures to intensify education in
the revolutionary traditions.
Kim Jong II ensured that diverse forms and methods
were adopted in conducting education in the revolutionary
traditions by editing new pictorial records of the great leader's
revolutionary history, publishing large quantities of edu-
cational materials and revolutionary novels on the revo-
lutionary traditions and increasing the production of

achievements of the great leader should be arranged well
according to a far-reaching plan.
Despite the pressure of the work of the Party and affairs of
state, he visited Mt. Wangjae as many as three times in a little
over one year between 1974 and 1975 for inspection of the
construction project at the Wangjaesan Revolutionary Site.
In the wake of the construction of the Wangjaesan
Revolutionary Site, he developed a grand plan for turning the
whole region of Mt. Paekdu and Lake Samji into a grand
place of revolutionary education. He gave effective guidance
for this project and made sure that wide area of the
revolutionary battle sites extending from Hyesan to Mt.
Paekdu was built imposingly into a great open-air re-
volutionary museum.
Thanks to his wise guidance, all the revolutionary battle
sites and places and museums including the Mangyondae
Revolutionary Site, Pochonbo Revolutionary Battle-Site and
Kunza Revolutionary Museum have been furnished more
splendidly and the whole country turned into a school to

report of loyalty to the great leader and receive precious gifts
or have the honour of being awarded the title of Labour Hero
and other kinds of high state decorations. And he showed
great political confidence to those excellent team members
prepared politically and ideologically so that they might be
admitted to the Workers' Party of Korea, and bestowed
an ever lasting political life on the three-revolution-team

When he was informed of the heroic death of Kim Bak
Myong, a student of the Kim Chaek University of
Kim Jong II not only gave him the honour of being admitted
to the Workers' Party of Korea but bestowed great favours on
his family. Emotional stories of such great confidence and
solicitude he has shown to the three-revolution team members
are embroidered on the proud road they have come along.
Inspired by such energetic guidance and great love he had
given them, the three-revolution team members grew into
creditable vanguard in the three revolutions, and this move-
ment served as a great driving force which greatly expedite the
ideological, technical and cultural revolutions among the
broad sections of the masses.
The line of the three revolutions was deeply cherished in
the hearts of the people, and the flames of the three
revolutions flared up fiercely in all parts of the country. This
urgently required a new mass movement to push ahead with
the three revolutions in a more active, organized manner.
Taking into deep consideration the matured demand of
our revolution, Kim Jong II initiated the Three-Revolution
Red Flag Movement with a far-reaching plan of developingin
depth the Chollima Workteam Movement created by the
great leader President Kim II Sung on to a new height in
conformity with the new requirements of modelling the whole
of society an the Juche idea.
Upon initiating this movement, he put up a revolutionary
slogan "Let Us Meet the Requirements of Juche in Ideology,
Technology and Culture!."
Toward the close of 1975 he kindled the first torch of the

 Movement among the workers of the Komdok General
Mining Enterprise and the farmers of the Chongsan
Cooperative Farm and led them to spread the flames rapidly
to all over the country.
As a result, the Movement which started from the
Komdok General Mining Enterprise and the Chongsan
Cooperative Farm was rapidly expanded and developed in a
matter of one month as a mass movement embracing the
whole of society.
In his historical work published on the first of January,
1976, "On Some Main Tasks to Be Carried Out in Party Work
This Year," and other works Kim Jong II gave an overall
exposition of the matters of principle arising in pressing ahead
with the Movement.
He said as regards the essence of this Movement:
"The three revolution red flag movement is a new mass
movement for making full preparations to meet the great
revolutionary event and step up to the utmost the building of
socialism and communism by applying the principles of the
speed campaign and ideological battle and organically com-
bining and dynamically pushing ahead with the ideological
remoulding of man and the collective innovation movement
in economic, cultural and defence upbuilding."
He taught that the three revolutions were strategical tasks
to be carried out till communism has been built and they could
not be fulfilled in a short period. He said that in pressing
forward the Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement it was
important to set correct stages of it, properly define tasks for
each stage and correctly make the review and appraisal of the
Movement.
He stressed that it was also necessary to enhance the role
of working people's organizations, attach importance to the

work of the three-revolution teams and this work should be
converted to work of the Party committees.
He not only gave explicit answers to all the theoretical and
practical questions in this Movement but also wisely led the
work of expanding and developing in compliance with the
requirements of the developing realities.
To begin with, he saw to it that Party organizations
strengthened guidance over the Movement.
Accordingly, a directive on the Three-Revolution Red
Flag Movement was issued down in June, 1976, to have
debates on it as an all-Party work and, on this basis, the
Movement was more forcefully pushed forward in all branc-
hes and units.
He set forth a task of launching the Movement for

speed campaign in all branches of socialist construction.
He said:
"The speed campaign is the basic form of battle in socialist
construction to push forward all work at a lightning tempo."

ahead with work at the highest tempo by mobilizing all forces
and, at the same time, to ensure its quality on the highest level.
Ways of vigorously waging the speed campaign are to give
definite precedence to the ideological revolution, constantly
renovate technology by pressing ahead with the technical
revolution and follow them up with correct organizational
work and guidance.
Kim Jong II mobilized the entire people in the en-
deavours to successfully apply the policy of the speed
campaign and thus effect a new upswing in socialist construc-
tion and fulfil the Six-Year Plan ahead of schedule.
To effect a new upswing in socialist construction was an
urgent requirement of the economic development of our
country in those days. 1976 was a decisive year in the struggle
of our people to fulfil the grand tasks of the Six-Year National
Economic Plan ahead of the set time.
However, a litte more than two months were left till the
yearend, and it was by no means easy to effect an un-
precedented upswing in the economic work on the whole with
the existing equipment and manpower.
At that time, the new war provocation moves of the US
imperialists and the south Korean puppet clique reached a

more dangerous phase than ever before in our country,'and
this urgently demanded that the gains of socialism be
consolidated politically, economically and militarily.
A great upswing in socialist construction was also ur-
gently required to demonstrate once again the superiority and
potential of the socialist system amidst the worldwide econ-
omic stagnation.
Kim Jong D initiated a 70-day battle, clearly foreseeing
that the only way to bridge over difficulties under such
complicated situation of our revolution at home and abroad
was to launch the speed campaign in all sectors of socialist
construction.
He called consultative meetings of Party, state and
economic functionaries on several occasions in October 1974,
at which he clearly indicated the purpose and ways of carrying
out the 70-day battle, and energetically led the battle with his
experienced leadership ability.
He formed a powerful leading force to command the
battle and worked out a well-regulated commanding system
from the centre down to provincial major production branc-
hes and units.
Seeing an important key to victory of the 70-day battle in
the ideological campaign, he saw to it that ideological
education and ideological struggle were conducted vigorously
at all units. He ensured that the ideological campaign was
guaranteed by meticulous organizational work and guidance
for tapping reserves, designated the extracting industry,
transport and exports as the main fronts of the 70-day battle
and concentrated forces on them.
He called at many factories and cooperative farms across
the country, indicated the orientation and ways of effecting a
new upswing in production and construction, personally

working people to work new miracles and perform exploits in
the revolutionary spirit of the speed campaign.
He bestowed deep political trust on the working people
who performed feats during the battle, and showed warm
loving care for the people, paying heed to their boarding and
lodging, health and rest and even buses they went by. The
revolutionary enthusiasm of our youths and other working
people grew immensely, and production rose by leaps with
each passing day.
The policy of the speed campaign was successfully carried
through in the process of the 70-day battle, with the result that
the "Speed of the 70-Day Battle," a new Chollima speed, was
created.
The gross industrial output value in one month of 1974
was 52 percent up on the like period of the previous year, and
that in 1974 17.2 percent up on the previous year. Thus, a
breakthrough was made in fulfilling the Six-Year Plan ahead
of schedule.
The 70-day, battle which ended in a great victory was a
historical one which opened a new chapter in the grand
onward movement for modelling the economy on the Juche
idea.
In February 1975 the Central People's Committee of the
Democratic People's Republic of Korea, reflecting the un-
animous desire of our Party and our people, adopted a
historic decision to award the title of DPRK hero to dear
Comrade Kim Jong II who led the revolution and construc-
tion to a great upswing with his outstanding and tested
leadership.
Drawing on the successes gained in the 70-day battle,
Kim Jong II unfolded a new operation of waging again a

grand battle of loyalty to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the
foundatipn of the Workers' Party of Korea as a grand festival
of victors, and dynamically mobilized the whole Party and the
entire people in it.
He bent big efforts on resolving the transport problem.
He established a system of transport by cableway at the
April 13 Iron and Steel Works and promoted the construction
of a large-scale headings transport pipe at the Kim Chaek
Iron and Steel Works. And he roused the entire people to the
project for carrying heaps of mucks from the Unryul Mine to
the sea scores of ri off through a large-sized long-distance belt
conveyer and enlarging the map of the country in future.
He also made sure that the mining industry, the first
process of production, was developed, and a great upswing
effected in the production of nonferrous metal ores in
particular.
He made the whole Party and the whole country forcefully
help the Komdok Mine with the aim of making big leaps at
the mine, a leading nonferrous metal ore producer of our
country, and thus providing an occasion for new upsurge on
all fronts of socialist construction.
In July 1975 he gave on-the-spot guidance to the Komdok
Mine.
He drove down to the underground pit although fun-
ctionaries and workers dissuaded him, and sat knee to knee
with workers and gave concrete teachings on effecting a new
innovation in the production of minerals.
After his on-the-spot guidance the workers of the
Komdok Mine effected an unprecedented upswing in mineral
production to overfulfil the mineral production plan en-
visaged in the Six-Year Plan by the end of July.
The flame that flared up in the Komdok Mine, afterwards,

and mass meetings or meetings for supporting and im-
plementing the theses were held at the central, provincial, city
and county level and at industrial establishments and cooper-
ative farms, thus vigorously stirring up the entire people for
the purpose.
Under his leadership the contents and methods of edu-
cation were improved, the material foundations of education
consolidated and the state and social concern for the edu-
cational work grew as a whole. This brought about new
changes in educational work.
He vigorously pushed ahead with the efforts for the
development of scientific researches.
He expounded the basic mission of scientific researches
and the revolutionary demand for the proper development of

celebrated the 30th founding anniversary of the Republic as a
grand festival of victors.
Dear Comrade Kim Jong II, on the basis of this success,
again organized a new offensive to attain higher goals of
socialist construction.
At the 17th Plenary Meeting of the 5th Party Central
Committee he defined it as new offensive targets of our Party

standards and ease the strain on transport, and energetically

celerated, and paid deep attention to the living conditions and
supply service for the welfare of coal miners.
The coal miners, deeply cherishing the Party's intentions,
successfully carried out their production assignments by
displaying a high degree of revolutionary zeal and creative
ingenuity and opened a broad vista for increased coal
production.
Kim Jong II also made untiring efforts to markedly
develop foreign trade.
He guaranteed that exports production bases were con-
solidated, production increased and the sources of exports
actively explored and tapped on the one hand and the
production of export goods were ensured in good time on
schedule and our Party's credit-first policy carried through on
the other in foreign trade. Along with this, he ensured the
production and supply of modern transport means and cargo
ships and the reconstruction and expansion of trade ports.
As a result, the commodity export in 1979 increased 30

Already from the beginning of 1978 he personally or-
ganized and led the 200-day battle for the transport revol-
ution to make a new innovation in transportation. Then, he

with the requirements of socialist construction of a high stage
again at the 18th Plenary Meeting of the 5th Party Central
Committee in June 1979.
He saw to it that the material foundations of railway
transport were consolidated and equipment and materials
needed for railway electrification were supplied preferen-
tially, and sent excellent scientists and technicians to carry
through the policy of three-way transport. In July 1979 he
kindled the fierce flames of the "Drive for Extra-haulage on
Schedule without Accident to Implement the Decisions of the
18th Plenary Meeting of the 5th Central Committee of the
Workers' Party of Korea" in the railway transport domain.
And he made sure that the whole Party, the whole country
and the entire people rendered more active social assistance to
transportation.
In consequences, the strain on transport, one of the
problems in the fulfilment of the Second Seven-Year Plan,
was eased.
He organized and guided the work of actively promoting
the revolution in the domain of science and technology and
thoroughly implementing the Taean Work System.
He founded a unique method of scientific researches
reflecting the requirements of the speed campaign and, in
February 1978, formed and sent "February 17 Shock

to major units of the national economy, and formed "May 19
Technical Innovation Shock Brigades" embracing scientists
and skilled workers on the job to press ahead with the

As a result, a new turn was made in the development of the
nation's science and technology and in the carrying out of the
technical revolution, and a great progress was made in the
endeavourings for the Juche-orientation, modernization and
scientification of the national economy.
Kim Jong II also took measures of regularizing and
standardizing industrial management in conformity with the
demands of the Taean Work System and further improving
the planning of the national economy, and put emphasis on
consolidating the financial foundations of the national
economy by strengthening the financial summing-up system
and discipline.
He paid deep attention to work for the betterment of the
people's living.
He saw to it that, first of all, functionaries had a correct
idea and viewpoint of the people's living, and then, the
people's dietary life was made affluent by effecting great
changes in the production of mass consumer goods and
directing big efforts on the development of agriculture and
fisheries. And he ensured that many dwelling houses were
built and the revolution was made in the public service
domain, and showed a deep loving care for the people by
sending uniforms, shoes and school things to the children and
students all over the country and padded clothes of good
quality to all the fanners on the occasion of the 67th birthday
of the great leader President Kim II Sung.
The entire working people turned out as one in the charge

the leader, for the country and the people, were produced
from among our people in the process of the fulfilment of the
Second Seven-Year Plan.
In October 1979 Kim Jong II personally initiated the
Movement for Following the Examples of Unassuming
Heroes and raised this as an important policy of the Party.
He pointed out:
"The movement for learning from the examples of
unassuming heroes is a mass movement for influencing all
members of society with positive examples to make them
revolutionaries boundlessly faithful to the leader and the
Party and for giving full play to their revolutionary zeal and
creative activeness to bring about a great upswing in socialist
construction."
Unassuming heroes regarded it as their supreme duty to
resolve the problems the great leader President Kim II Sung
and dear Comrade Kim Jong II wanted and intended to
solve, and made tireless efforts for the purpose. For a long
time, not merely a year or two, they lived and worked with
pure revolutionary conscience for the Party and the leader,
for the country and the people, devoting their all silently
without any private interest in reward.

examples so as to rouse the broad masses in this Movement.
The three revolutions were further accelerated and funda-
mental changes took place in the ideological and moral traits
of our people and in their style of work and life in the heat of
the vigorous Movement under his sagacious leadership.
As a result of this Movement the masses' unquestioned
trust in the great leader President Kim II Sung and dear
Comrade Kim Jong II immensely deepened, the ranks of
unassuming heroes increased on all fronts of socialist con-
struction and new miracles and leaps were wrought in the
economic construction and in the development of science and
technology.
Kim Jong II strengthend and developed our Party's
revolutionary armed forces.
Our revolution which reached a new stage of its develop-
ment urgently required strengthening as never before tHe
People's Army to guarantee the cause of modelling the whole
society on the Juche idea by force of arms.
Deeply grasping the requirements of our developing

policy of modelling the whole Army on the revolutionary idea
of the great leader.
Modelling the whole Army on the revolutionary idea of
the great leader means to bring up all the soldiers to be
revolutionary soldiers of the great leader and carry on the
building of the revolutionary armed forces and all military
activities as required by the Juche idea, the revolutionary idea
of the great leader.
Of paramount importance here was to firmly prepare all
the soldiers politically and ideologically and rear them as
Juche-type revolutionary soldiers boundlessly loyal to the
Party and the leader.
Kim Jong II set forth for the People's Army a slogan "Let
Us Fight for the Great Leader at the Cost of Our Lives!"
Our People's Army soldiers, under this slogan were firmly
prepared to defend the Party Central Committee headed by
the great Comrade Kim II Sung politically and ideologically
and with their lives at any time and in any place and further
strengthened the militancy and combat preparations of their
units.
Kim Jong II laid emphasis on briskly conducting edu-
cation in loyalty within the People's Army and strengthening
class education, education in socialist patriotism and elevat-
ing the political consciousness of soldiers.
He set the Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement as the
highest form of mass movement within the People's Army and
directed attention to increasing the number of Red Flag
Companies. He saw to it that the units which had already won
the title of the Red Flag Company enhanced their qualitative
level to be twice and thrice Red Flag Companies and, further,

Early in December, 1979, he organized a national mem-
orial meeting with a large attendance on the lapse of 40 years
since Comrade Ο Jung Hup, a communist revolutionary
fighter boundlessly loyal to the great leader, died in battle
during the anti-Japanese armed struggle, and initiated the
movement for learning from Comrade Ο Jung Hup within the
People's Army with this as an occasion.
Afterwards, he gave precious teachings of learning from
Comrade Kim Hyok and Cha Gwang Su, young communists
who were faithful to the great leader in the early period of our
revolution, and thus further developed in depth education in
loyalty among the soldiers.
Upholding this movement initiated by him, the entire
soldiers grew up to be Juche-type revolutionary soldiers
holding the great leader in high esteem with loyal hearts, with
a pure and clean conscience, and firmly defending him in any
adversity.
Kim Jong Π also thoroughly embodied the anti-
Japanese guerrilla methods of propaganda and agitation with
a view to bringing about a new turn in the political and
ideological education within the People's Army. And, in
order to turn all propaganda and agitation into propaganda
and agitation for the front, he ensured that all political work
was conducted just the way the frontline political work roused

propagandized, and that the movement unwaveringly ad-
vanced along the road of anti-imperialism and independence.
And he gave instructions at large to ensure that our delegation
played an active role in the Fifth and Sixth Non-aligned
Summits.
The Sixth Non-aligned Summit estimated the role played
by our country in the non-aligned movement and unanim-
ously approved the election of our country as a member
nation of the Coordinating Bureau of this movement.
Kim Jong II saw to it that our Party adhered to the stand
of Juche in the international communist movement and
waged a principled struggle against any acts of hindering the
independent development of this movement.
He paid deep attention to the socialist countries, commun-
ist and workers' parties working to quickly eliminate dif-
ferences of opinions and achieve unity on the basis of
Chajusong. At the same time, he cautioned against encroach-
ing on other's sovereignty in the international arena and made
sure that the principle of equality and independence was kept
in the relations between socialist countries and communist
and workers' parties of different countries.
The international authority of our Party and the
Government of our Republic immensely grew and inter-
national solidarity for our revolution became unpreceden-
tedly stronger thanks to the high international authority of
the great leader President Kim II Sung and the energetic
activities of dear Comrade Kim Jong II.
Our country has diplomatic relations with more than 100
countries on the five continents and is expanding and
developing economic and cultural exchange and cooperation
with many countries of the world.

Our revolution entered a new stage of its development in
the 1980s.
Solid foundations for modelling the whole society on the
Juche idea in an allround way were laid as result of the
vigorous acceleration of the three revolutions—ideological,
technical and cultural.
The Party's organisational and ideological foundations
were cemented noticeably and our Party reached a new stage
of its development.
Ομτ Party and people were faced with heavy yet honorable
tasks of accelerating the modelling of the whole society by
consolidating and developing the already achieved successes.
Kim Jong II carried on tireless, energetical activities to
make the Sixth Congress of the Party a historical congress
making a new turning-point of our revolution.
He guided the work of more closely rallying the whole
Party and the entire people behind the great leader and
effecting unprecedented miracles and innovations on all
fronts of socialist construction on the occasion of the
upcoming Congress of the Party. He also personally designed,
organized and guided all work from anangements of docu-
ments to various political functions, and took meticulous care

level.
The Sixth Congress of our Party was grandly held in
Pyongyang, the capital of our revolution, in October 1980.
The Sixth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea
proclaimed the modelling of the whole society on the Juche
idea as the general task of our revolution and put forward
highly important tasks of accelerating the revolutionization,
working-classization and intellectualization of all the mem-
bers of society and successfully attaining the 10 long-term
objectives of socialist economic construction and thus achiev-
ing complete victory of socialism in the near future and,
further, modelling the whole society on the Juche idea.
In his works including "On Some Tasks of Party
Organizations", classical work he published in December
1980 with a view to carrying through the far-reaching
programme set forth by the Sixth Congress of the Party
Kim Jong II advanced new tasks of making a decisive turn in
modelling the whole society on the Juche idea.
He taught that, in order to bring about a decisive turn in
modelling the whole society on the Juche idea, it was
necessary, above all, to press ahead with the work of rearing
all the members of society as genuine communist revo-
lutionaries of Juche type. To this end, he stressed, it was
imperative to constantly develop in depth education for
firmly establishing a revolutionary attitude toward the leader,
intensify revolutionary education and class education, com-
munist education and education in socialist patriotism and
thus make people equipped with a high degree of communist
ideology.
He also instructed that a new upswing should be brought
about in socialist economic construction.

He emphasized that the Taean Work System should be
thoroughly implemented in all branches and units of the
national economy by exploring and tapping inner reserves in
production and construction to the maximum in the re-
volutionary spirit of self-reliance, and that a great campaign
should be launched to rapidly develop the nation's science
and technology. At the same time, he said, the Three-
Revolution Team Movement, the Three-Revolution Red
Flag Movement and the Movement for Learning the
Examples of Unassuming Heroes should be organized in a
more rational way and, thus, the whole society be seethedi
with these movements.
He taught that the basic key to the modelling the whole
society on the Juche idea was to constantly develop in depth
Party work in conformity to the new requirements of the
revolution.
He laid emphasis on the need to establish within the Party
a revolutionary trait of unconditionally accepting and
thoroughly implementing the great leader's teachings and the
Party's policies, to consolidate the Party's foundations, to
skillfully organize the masses with Juche-oriented leadership
ability and successfully ensure Party's guidance over the
administrative and economic affairs.
The tasks of modelling the whole society on the Juche idea
clarified by Kim Jong II were an immortal militant banner
which imbued our people with the firm conviction of victory
and infinitely encouraged their struggle.
Kim Jong II energetically pushed ahead with the en-
deavour to consolidate the Party's foundations.
He directed biggest efforts to this work to further
accelerate the cause of modelling the whole society on the
Juche idea.

 He pointed out: "To lay the foundations of Party is a very
important task related to the future destiny of the revolution.
Only when solid foundations of the Party are laid, is it
possible to develop and strengthen our Party forever to be a
revolutionary Party guided by Juche and brilliantly carry
forward to completion generation after generation the re-
volutionary cause started by the great leader Comrade
Kim II Sung."
Laying the Party's foundations means to consolidate the
organizational and ideological foundations for developing
the Party into a Party of the successor to the cause of the
leader.
This is a very important matter related to the future
destiny of the revolution. Only when the Party's foundations
are consolidated is it possible to successfully carry forward the
revolutionary cause of the leader to accomplishment, guided
by the revolutionary idea of the leader, even though the
generations of the revolution change. *
In the past our Party carried on energetic activities to
consolidate its foundations and made great successes. In
particular, the Sixth Congress of the Party marked an
occasion of new turn in consolidating the Party's found-
ations. The Congress demonstrated to the whole world the
unshakable determination and will of our Party and people to
carry the revolutionary cause of Juche through to ac-
complishment, invariably holding Kim Jong II in high
esteem as the great successor to the revolutionary cause of the
respected leader President Kim II Sung.
Most important in consolidating the Party's foundations
was to further strengthen the work of fostering loyalty to the
Party among the Party members and other working people.
In "On Further Improving and Strengthening the Party's

Ideological Work", a historical work made public at the
National Meeting of Party Propaganda Workers in M*ich
1981, and his other classical works Kim Jong II gave an
overall exposition of the questions of principle in ideological
education on bringing up the Party members and other
working people as genuine Kimilsungists boundlessly faithful
to the Party and the revolution, and vigorously pushed ahead
with the struggle for the purpose. Hence, educational work
for making people deeply understand the role of the successor
in carrying forward the leader's revolutionary cause and the
significance of loyalty to the successor in the Party building
and revolutionary struggle came to be conducted as a
systematic and regular practice through study networks.
And the publication of a large number of books and
pamphlets explaining the Party's ideas and theories, reminis-
cences and educational books about the wise leadership and
benevolence of Kim Jong D made great contributions to
education in loyalty to the Party.
In December 1980 he initiated the work for learning from
young communists including Kim Hyok and Cha Gwang Su
and saw to it that the work was pressed forward in all sectors
and units to foster fidelity to the Party among the Party
members and other working people. As a result, the Party
members and other working people, under the slogan "Let All
of Us Become Kim Hyoks and Cha Gwang Sus of the 80s!",
came to work and live, regarding as a paragon of the fervent
loyalty with which the young communists upheld the great
leader in the early period of the Korean revolution.
Kim Jong II also ensured that the ideological and purposeful
unity and purity were firmly guaranteed throughout the Party
by organizing well the work for establishing the Party's
monolithic ideological system.

 In consolidating the Party's foundations it is important to
build the ranks of cadres with officials faithful to the Party.
The Party's leadership is realised through cadres, the
hardcore force of the Party. The Party's foundations can be
consolidated successfully, therefore, only when ranks of
cadres are built with elite people.
Kim Jong II made sure that the ranks of cadres were built
under a far-reaching plan, with main emphasis put on loyalty
to the Party as an absolute feature* and the system for rearing
reserves was established well and the competent cadres
underwent a refresher course. He gave guidance in detail to
ensure that Party cadres training institutions improved the
quality of education decisively and rear all cadres as a
dependable backbone of the revolution boundlessly loyal to
the Party. , J, of the county Party committee youth affairs departments and
In order to consolidate the Party's foundation he es-
tablished a revolutionary principle under which the whole
Party move as one under the guidance of the Party Central
Committee. He saw to it that all Party work was concentrated
on the Party Central Committee, the. whole Party un-

Party's decisions and instructions, and the function and role
of Party organizations at all levels were enhanced so that all
the cadres and other Party members carried on the revolution
and construction under the guidance of the Party. And he

To intensify the Party life of the cadres and other Party
members he organized an all-Party study of the new Rules
which was adopted at the Sixth Party Congress and, in 1982,
saw to it that the work of issuing Party membership

Rearing youth and children, the future masters Of> the
rotation, as genuine heirs boundlessly faithful to the
Vievolution is of very weighty significance in consolidating the

Kim Jong II said: "To strengthen the Party's guidance of
.work with youth and children is one of the most important
?:tasks facing the Party of the working class and a very
important matter related to the future destiny of the Party and
"tevolution."
He put his body and soul into the work of bringing up
and children as heirs to the revolution boundlessly
; ikithful to the Party.
In July 1981 he arranged a short course for functionaries
j#ent a historical letter "On Further Strengthening the Party's
[Leadership for Work with Youth and Children," expounding
! jn a comprehensive way all questions of principle arising* in
;this work.
In October that year he personally attended the Seventh
^Congress of the League of Socialist Working Youth of Korea
i;(LSWYK) and took meticulous care of the holding of the
'Congress as a whole, thus providing an occasion of signal turn
in improving and strengthening work with youth and child-
ren. And he took new measures to strengthen the Party's
" leadership to work with youth and children and reorganized
tiie LSWYK work systemin an overall way in the direction of
strengthening the Province, city and county LSWYK
committees.
He also made young Party members take part in LSWYK
life to further strengthen the organizational life of LSWYK
I members and give them more influence of the Party. At the

same time, he established a new cadres training system to
actively rear reserves of the Party among young people,
constantly reinforce the Party ranks with them and solve the
problem of cadres of the Party and state in a far-sighted way.
With the Party's leadership to work with youth and
children strengthened, the Party's monolithic ideological
system was more firmly established within the LSWYK, and
the modelling of the youth ranks on the Juche idea was further
accelerated. · He pointed out:
While constantly developing in depth the work of con-
solidating the Party's foundations, Kim Jong Π unfolded a
grand blueprint for building our Party under a far-reaching
plan in line with the requirements of accomplishing the
historical cause of modelling the whole Party and society on
the Juche idea.
He published the immortal classical work "The Workers'
Party of Korea Is a Juche-type Revolutionary Party Which
Infierited the Glorious Tradition of the DIU" on October 17,
1982, on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the formation
of the Down-with-Imperialism Union (DIU) by the great
leader.
In this historical treatise he gave an overall exposition of
the course of the efforts for the founding of our Party during
the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle and of the struggle to
strengthen and develop our Party after the country's liber-
ation. He also pointed out the nature and characteristic
features of our Party as a new-type revolutionary Party of the
working class.
As he taught, our Party is a glorious Juche-type re-
volutionary Party which was built and carries on activities,
guided by the Juche idea, which has thoroughly established
the monolithic ideological system throughout it and achieved

steel-like unity and cohesion on the basis of the Jucife idea,
which has established close bonds of kinship with the masses
and struggles for the accomplishment of the revolutionary
cause of Juche by enhancing their role. In this historical
treatise he also clarified the position and role of the Party in
accomplishing the cause of socialism and communism and
put forth new task to build the Party under a far-reaching
plan.
"In carrying out the cause of socialism and communism,
we should build the Party in a far reaching way in view of its
position and role. This can be realised only through the work
of modelling the whole Party on the Juche idea."
He raised it as a fundamental problem to model the whole
Party on the Juche idea in building it under a far-reaching
plan, and indicated overall tasks to solve it.
He taught that, in order to strengthen and develop our
Party, it was important to constantly deepen the work of
establishing the Party's monolithic ideological system and
thus firmly defend the lineage of Juche and carry it forward,
pure and dean.
At the same time, he stressed the necessity of taking the
great leader's idea and theory as the eternal guiding idea and
theory of the Party and firmly defending his revolutionary
exploits, fighting experience, revolutionary work method and
popular style of work and successfully carrying forward and
developing the revolutionary cause of Juche.
He instructed that the great unity and cohesion of the
Party should be defended and further strengthened down
through generations, saying that to defend the unity and
cohesion of the Party and its purity was an important
question related to the destiny of the Party and the revolution.

 The historical treatise of Kim Jong Π "The Workers'
Party of Korea Is a Juche-type Revolutionary Party Which
Inherited the Glorious Tradition of the DIU" is an immortal
encyclopedia giving an integral systematisation and consum-
mation of the revolutionary theories of building the Party and
revolutionary principles of Party activities. It is a guideline to
be held fast to in strengthening and developing our Party for
ever to be the Party of the great leader.
Kim Jong II dynamically roused our people in the en-
deavourings to attain the new long-term objectives of socialist
economic construction.
These new long-term objectives set by the historical Sixth
Congress of the Party were grand programmes of economic
construction for laying solid material and technical found-
ations commensurate with a completely triumphant socialist
society and a blueprint for turning our country into a more
developed socialist economic power.
For our Party and people to successfully hit these vast
long-term targets, it was necessary to effect a great re-
volutionary upswing once again and thus forcefully accelerate
the revolution and construction.
Kim Jong Π, who deeply considered this urgent require-
ment of our revolution set forth a revolutionary, militant task
of creating a new speed of the 80s in the spirit of the great
Chollima upsurge.
He said that the drive for creating the speed of the 80s was
one for effecting once again a great upswing in socialist
construction as in the days when a great revolutionary
upsurge was brought about with the Plenary Meeting of the
Party Central Committee in December 1956.
The new speed of the 80s is a speed of leaps whereby to
make an extraordinarily rapid progress in the spirit of

Chollima spurred on by the speed campaign and thus
accomplish in a few months and on the highest level what
should be done in a few years; it is a speed of self-reliance, a
new speed of producing and building on one's own, always
relying on one's own efforts, and renovating and creating
everything from a new angle, not restricted to any existing
formula or experience.
It is a speed of loyalty based on the dose unity and
cohesion of the entire people around the great leader
President Kim II Sung and dear Comrade Kim Jong II,
based on the burning loyalty and revolutionary zeal of our
people who carry out without slightest vacillation any
militant task set by the great leader and the dear leader.
Kim Jong II wisely led the efforts to create the new speed
of the 80s and thus attain the 10 long-term objectives of
socialist economic construction.
He strengthened political work to vigorously mobilize the
whole Party and the entire people in the efforts to attain these
objectives.
He established a well-regulated system for bringing the
Party's economic policies home to the functionaries and
producer masses, and intensified economic policy studies
through educational networks so they could acquire the
Party's intentions in breadth and depth.
And he saw to it that various agitations for increased
production such as oral propaganda, art propaganda and
audio-visual agitation were conducted to make the producer
masses fully display all their creative wisdom and devotion in
implementing the Party's economic policies.
He also made sure that meetings were held in different
sectors of the national economy and all Party organisations
and working people's organizations held meetings for ideo-

encouraging all the working people to turn out as one in the

His intentions of bringing about a new revolutionary

glorifying the history of our Party and people again with
heroic feats was launched on all fronts of socialist construc-
tion in hearty response to the Party's militant call "Let Us
Create the 'Speed of the 80s' in the Spirit of the Period of the
Great Chollima Upsurge!"
Kim Jong II guaranteed that a revolutionary trait of
absoluteness and unconditionality was established and the
revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and hard struggle highly
displayed in the implementation of the Party's policies, while
closely combining the struggle to create the "speed of the 80s"
with the Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement and the
Movement for Learning from the Examples of Unassuming
Heores.
Along with this, he led the leading economic officials to set
positive examples and command production in a responsible
manner. , metallurgical methods, new smelteries were built and the

Subsequently, a broad vista for carrying out the four
grand nature-remaking projects on schedule was opened.
In order to attain the 10 long-range objectives ahead of the
set time, he pressed ahead with the consolidation of raw
materials, fuel and power bases. He sent a powerful guidance
group to the ore and coal mines, the domain of prime
importance in attaining these objectives, and saw to it that
modern technical means were supplied fully to build up new
ore and coal mines and power stations on an extensive scale..
He also bent great efforts on reinforcing metal and
machine production bases.
With a view to attaining the steel production goal earlier
than schedule, he ensured that metallurgical factories includ-
ing the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Works were reconstructed
on an expansion basis and the technical equipment level of
production processes was improved, the independence and
Juche character of the ferrous metallurgical industry were
further strengthened by developing and completing new
production of non-ferrous metals increased.
He guaranteed that primary efforts were directed to
making machinery a precision, large-sized and high-speed one
with accelerated pace by making the revolution in the
pressing, stampforging, welding and insulated material fields
so as to markedly develop the machine industry. And he made
sure that the technical revolution was pressed forward to
invent and manufacture new machinery, the truck, tractor

 and other farm machines and remarkably increase their
production capacities.
As a result, the raw material, fuel and power production
bases were consolidated in our country, new innovations
effected in the production of metals and machines and broad
vista for attainment of the 10 long-term objectives at an early
date was opened.
Paying deep attention to the development of agricultural
production, Kim Jong II led the work of completing the
comprehensive mechanization and widespread use of chemi-
cals in agriculture in a short period, and organized and
commanded the countryside supporting campaign and took
various measures of overcoming damages caused by the cold
front.
He saw to it that a new leap was made in the light industry
and welfare service domains to improve the people's living
standard at a fast tempo.
He ensured that the construction of dwelling houses was
undertaken in Pyongyang, Hamhung and all other areas of
the country on an extensive scale and when he was looking
round Mt. Myohyangin Mayl981 and Mt. Kumgangin June
he taught that the places of scenic beauty should be built up
well as cultural recreation grounds for the working people.
During his on-the-spot guidance to Hamhung in June
1981, he showed much care for the increasing traffic and
health problems of the working people and ensured that the
production of foodstuff was industrialized in keeping with
increasing the capacities of meat production bases so as to
fully solve the question of their dietary life.
Our Party and people came to greet the 40th birthday of
Kim Jong II (February 16, 1982) meaningfully against the

efforts to create the "Speed of the 80s". ' ·
However, he dissuaded people from celebrating his
birthday and never allowed any official function to be held for
it, saying he is only a soldier of the great leader.
On the occasion of the greatest auspicious holiday of the
nation the Central People's Committee of the DPRK awar-
ded the title of hero of the DPRK to Kim Jong II, reflecting
the ardent desire of the entire Party members and other
people.
Our people accelerated the forceful march along the road
of victory with a more staunch fighting spirit and conviction
of sure victory, with a high pride and honour of holding
Kim Jong II in high esteem as the great successor to the cause
of Juche.
Kim Jong II made the 70th birthday of the great leader
President Kim II Sung shine as a grand political festival.
1982 was a significant year marking the 70th birthday of
the great leader President Kim II Sung and die 40th birthday
of Kim Jong II, two most auspicious and significant
holidays.
Cherishing a noble plan to have the 70th birthday of the
great leader celebrated as a grand political festival and
thereby glorify his revolutionary exploits for ever,
Kim Jong Π made tireless efforts to carry it into effect.
Our Party members and other working people were
unanimous in wishing to celebrate the 70th birthday of the
great leader as the greatest auspicious event of the nation for
glorifying his revolutionary exploits for ever.
To celebrate 70th birthday as a grand political festival
Kim Jong II paid primary attention to widely propagandiz-
ing his greatness.

 He saw to it that the great leader's works and excerpts of
his teachings including "Kim II Sung Works",
"Kim II Sung Selected Works" and "Teachings of the
Great Leader Comrade Kim II Sung on the Ideology,
Theory and Methodology of Juche" were published in large
quantities.
Notably, in March 1982, he organized a national seminar
on the Juche idea on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the
great leader Comrade Kim II Sung and authored "On the
Juche Idea", an immortal classical work of his own writing
which gave an allround exposition of the questions of
principle on the Juche idea and further developed them in
depth. This occasioned a new turn in the propaganda of the
Juche idea.
In this treatise he comprehensively explained the great
Juche idea including its historical significance.
While ensuring that documentaries recording revo-
lutionary activities of the great leader were compiled and
disseminated, he personally initiated the compilation of the
"Biography of the Great Leader Comrade Kim II Sung"
and "Revolutionary History of the Great Leader Comrade
Kim II Sung" and gave detailed guidance to it, thus further
deepening the propaganda about the glorious and brillant
revolutionary history of the great leader.
He made sure that many reminiscences were published in
large numbers to widely propagandize the immortal re-
volutionary exploits of the great leader and his noble
communistic traits.
He led the work of producing and disseminating re-
volutionary films including "The Star of Korea" which gives
a broad representation of the history of the great leader's
revolutionary activities, and many novels of "Immortal

History", a cycle of novels depicting the glorious andfcrilliant
revolutionary history of the great leader.
The world's revolutionaries and other people also con-
ducted brisk activities to propagandize the greatness of
President Kim II Sung on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
As a result, millions of volumes of his works were translated
and published in scores of foreign languages, and national,
regional and continental seminars on the Juche idea were
widely organized.
An international seminar on the Juche idea was held in
April 1982, with the attendance of 132 delegations and
delegates from 107 countries and 5 international organiz-
ations, which widely demonstrated once again the truth and
vitality of the great Juche idea of President Kim II Sung.
Kim Jong II wisely led the endeavours to construct grand
monumental structures to add brilliance to the greatness of
the great leader.
He initiated the construction of the Tower of the Juche
Idea and the Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang, the capital of
the revolution, and vigorously guided it.
He saw to it that Kim II Sung Stadium was rebuilt as a
sports and cultural base, and such magnificent and beautiful
structures as the Grand People's Study House, the Ice Rink,
the Chongryu Restaurant, Pyongyang Department Store No.
1 and Mangyongdae Fun Fair were constructed to display the
might of the country to the whole world.
He ensured the betterment of the people's living.
In order to more satisfactorily cater to the needs of people
for daily necessaries and foodstuff, he made sure that many
light industry factories, such as a paper-making mill, a
packing-material factory and a vegetable plant were built up
and the existing ones were operated at full capacity to

Hence, the national meeting to celebrate the 70th birthday
of the great leader was held on an unprecedented scale on
April 14,1982, and soiree of Pyongyang working people was
grandly organized on Arpil 15.
Colourful celebration performances and other functions
took place in local areas, and the music and dance epic "The
Song of Glory" and the mass gymnastic display "People Sing
of the Leader" showing the glorious course of the re-
volutionary struggle of the great leader and bis imperishable
revolutionary exploits were created and performed.
The 70th birthday of the great leader was grandly
celebrated worldwide as a grand political festival under the
particular care and guidance of Kim Jong II.
This grand political festival was participated in by heads
of state, party leaders and other prominent personages of
broad strata from 118 countries, and various functions were
held with a large attendance in almost all countries.
