Year 5 Curriculum Newsletter Autumn 2015

Welcome back to the new school term and your first term in Year 5! We have an exciting time planned this Autumn, much of which is based around our context for learning about the
Vikings. We will be asking ourselves Were the Vikings vicious or victorious? The information on this sheet will give you a brief overview of some of the activities we will be doing this term across the
curriculum.
Please feel free to contact Miss Fray if you have any questions or can offer any help.

English
Much of our English work will be linked to our study of The Vikings and
our class novel The Saga of Erik the Viking by Terry Jones. The children
will engage in both non-fiction and fictional writing. They will use the
disagreement between the Anglo Saxons and Vikings to write up a balanced discussion presenting two sides of an argument. They will also
compose a biographical account based on their research of the Viking
period. They will develop their skills in creating a mysterious atmosphere
and building tension by creating their own Viking Sagas (linked to our
class novel) through the form of both writing and drama.
The study of grammar, punctuation and spelling will be ongoing through
the year (following our new scheme of work).

Trips and Visits

We are currently looking to invite some Viking visitors into
school (more details to follow) as well as creating our own Viking
museum during the course of the term.

Mathematics
The children will work through the Year 5 National Curriculum
covering the following areas:

Place Value

Mental methods for addition and subtraction

Written methods for addition and subtraction

Handling money and decimal notation

Time

Measurement (length)

Mental methods for multiplication and division

Written methods for multiplication and division

Fractions
We want to become very confident with our multiplication tables to
12x12 (and the related division facts for these) this term also, so
please practice lots at home!

Computing
Following the New Curriculum for computing,
the children will:

Use blogging to understand computer networks and the

opportunities they offer for communication and
collaboration

Use and combine computing software to design and

create programs for presenting data and information

The children will continue to develop their skills using

iPads, and use the VLE to access homework and other
class/school tasks.

RE
We will be looking at two RE units of work this term. The first will look
at Hinduism and Hindu Gods and worship. The second will focus on
Christianity and followers of Jesus with a close link to Christmas preparations in school.

PSHE
In line with our new Values curriculum, the children will be looking at a new value each month and exploring what it means to
them. The values for this term are as follows:
September - Friendship
October - Appreciation
November - Caring
December - Love
