Hunting, Camping & Fishing

T he days of seeing someone walking down

a road with a stick, some string and a

bucket of worms are as much a part of

American culture as hot dogs, baseball and warm apple pie. Since that time, anglers now have many choices that go beyond that stick with a bucket of worms. Hunting and camping, along with fishing, have also become as deep rooted in American culter as everything in the aforementioned paragraph. Nowadays people have a wide variety of choices to make when selecting not only the gear they take with them, but also where to get them. Valley Rod & Gun is a family owned business that has been providing sporting goods to the Central Valley for more than 25 years. Inside the very large warehouse-like store you’ll find that you’ll have a wide range of fishing, hunting and shooting supplies. It’s not limited to the top 3-5 brands or manufacturers, Valley Rod & Gun has one of the largest selections of manufacturers in the entire Central Valley. Fishing supplies are also inclusive of more than just the freshwater variety, they include a vast majority of things you’ll need to get in to the saltwater game as well. And if you’re

The Cat House on the Kings

Saving the world, one cat at a time.

E very year the availability of help, housing,

and support for thousands of cats and

kittens in California’s Central Valley

shrinks. Over 50,000 are euthanized in local shelters and rescues, with an increasing amount of highly adoptable cats and kittens being turned away. An inconceivable number of these animals are abused, neglected, or abandoned on the streets and throughout these farmlands. The Cat House on the Kings is the largest no-cage, no-kill sanctuary for adoptable feral and stray cats. The organization is best known for their sanctuary, where they care for 700 to 1,000 homeless or unwanted felines at any given time. Upon arrival at The Cat House, every animal is given any needed medical care, is spayed/neutered and vaccinated. They are then placed in need appropriate cottages where they can become familiar with their surroundings. Once they feel comfortable enough, they are released onto the sanctuary grounds, and can roam about at will. The grounds are fully fenced and secure. While waiting for an adopting family, the cats and kittens have all the comforts of home with companion animals that have similar needs. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, The Cat House receives no government or public funding, and relies entirely on donations from the public to carry out its mission. The story of how it all started is a personal one. After a difficult divorce in 1981, Lynea Lattanzio, our founder, wanted to move to the quiet afforded by a place on a river. She settled on this 6 acre parcel in 1983. She often mused, “What was I thinking, single woman with no children living in a big house on 6 acres?” Nine years later, Lynea’s father asked for her help to replace his 2 Manx cats who had died of old age. In her quest to locate Manx kittens, Lynea visited a local animal shelter, and

carried home a box of 15 abandoned kittens (none of them Manx!). By the end of the year, she had rescued and placed 96 homeless cats. Lynea had found her calling, and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1993, Lynea came out of retirement to become a surgical veterinary technician with a local veterinarian. This experience helped increase her medical knowledge, and helped pay for the veterinary expenses of her growing feline population, which now numbered 150. Lynea sold her 1973 Mercedes 450 SL, her pride and joy, and her two-karat diamond wedding ring. There would no longer be a need for these with the life she had chosen. In 1997, the Fresno County Board of Supervisors approved a zoning variance for Lynea’s property. This variance pushed The Cat House into the public spotlight, and brought much-needed volunteers and financial support; in 2002 The Cat House on the Kings achieved non-profit status. In 2003, Lynea, with more volunteers and money, continued to expand The Cat House and added an area dedicated to the care of FIV positive cats. By 2004, The Cat House population had grown to over 500 cats and kittens. The Cat House was well known, but donations had not kept pace with expenses. A very generous donor, Doreen Wallet, left much of her estate to The Cat House on the Kings. This money was used to purchase the neighboring six acres and install cat-proof fencing around the entire 12 acre perimeter. Since its founding 23 years ago, The Cat House on the Kings has saved over 24,000 cats and 7,000 dogs (not counting the 40,000 animals we have spayed and neutered!) and currently cares for more than 700 cats and kittens, a dozen or so dogs and a handful of goats, who earn their keep as lawnmowers! It is our mission to place rescued cats and kittens into loving, permanent homes; to provide a safe, happy and healthy home for unwanted cats and kittens in a unique, no-cage facility; to prevent pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering; and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

What’s in a Label?

Labeling and Wording

use the word “natural” or “nature” in their company name or product name to create the illusion that what is inside their bottle is also natural. This is not always the case. Applying the word to the label does not alter the com- position of the product or what is inside the bottle.

Another way that labels can be misleading stems from the difference between what is required in the nutritional label and what information can be revealed in the list of “other ingredients.” Not all information is required to be disclosed in a nutritional label. We are used to reading serving size, fat calories, cholesterol, carbohydrates, proteins and such. The average consumer will stop there. It is important, how- ever, to keep reading beyond the nutritional box. Other ingredients impact the effectiveness of prod- ucts and often times render them useless to our body’s nutritional needs. Those pesky “other ingredients” regularly contain fillers and preservatives that are harmful to our bodies. Yet it is all too common for consumers to be content with the information contained only in the boxed area. Change serving size also contributes to misunderstandings in labeling and wording. While the logical mind assumes that the entire package, can, or container would often con- tain one serving, labeling allows for multiples servings. By creating smaller serving sizes, nutritional information can be manipulated. Being mindful of the serving size becomes very important for those of us who are watching our weight or trying to limit calorie intake. Be sure to pick up the next edition of The Valley’s Nickel to learn more about es- sential oils and their use. And as always, drink more water. Your body will love you for it. If you’d like more information on how Essential Oils can help you or your fami- ly, you can contact me at the number below or visit my website at www.PermissionCST.com.

I t is common knowledge that words matter. Words have meaning. They can be infor- mative, confrontational, emotional, or

joyful among other things. Words can also be mislead- ing. Everyone I know can admit to misunderstanding someone at some point in their lives. We do not always hear the sound emanating from peo-

lives. We do not always hear the sound emanating from peo- ple’s mouths. After that sound

ple’s mouths. After that sound arrives at our ears, misinterpreting the meaning behind the words becomes all too easy to do. Distrac- tions confuse our emotional filters and cloud our senses. Hearing and listening are not always the same thing. Words used on product label- ing struggle with the same problems that are common to spoken language. Labeling can be

infor-

ma-

tion as well as misleading. Regulations regarding what goes inside a prod- uct is not as restrictive as what is printed on the outside label. Let’s consider an example about the use of the word “pure” when applied to essential oils. If a bottle contains pure rosemary essential oil and nothing else, it can be labeled as “pure rosemary essential oil.” If a bottle contains a pure rosemary oil mixed with a pure carrier oil to dilute the rosemary, it can be labeled as “pure essential oils.” See the difference? Even thought everything inside the bottle might be “pure,” there is a huge difference in what you are actually getting for your money. The term “natural” is another exam- ple of labeling gone haywire. Some companies

hands-down favorite comfort food.

specialty dish that was introduced

to America by Thomas Jefferson, it was his cousin Mary Randolph who popularized it in her cookbook “The Virginia Housewife,” published in 1824. Whether you dress it up or down or enjoy it as a side or main dish, macaroni and cheese offers delicious versatility and partners perfectly with many meals. It travels well, too, for tailgating or bring-a-dish parties. This par- ticular macaroni and cheese recipe uses three cheeses, giving it a rich, creamy texture and fantastic flavor. While curly pasta is pictured here, you can easily substitute elbow. With so many tasty possibilities, don’t limit yourself to the variations below.

EASY PEASY CHEESY MACARONI

2 cups (8 ounces) curly or elbow style pasta 1/2 stick butter, divided 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs 1/2 teaspoon paprika

3

tablespoons flour

3

cups milk

1 4-ounce log chevre (a fresh, soft un-ripened goat cheese)

2 cups coarsely shredded Jarlsberg cheese

1 cup cubed American cheese

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350.

Butter a 2-quart round ovenproof casse- role dish.

Cook pasta one minute less than package directions; transfer to colander, and drain.

In same pot over very low heat, melt butter; remove from heat.

Measure 2 tablespoons butter and, in small bowl, combine it with breadcrumbs and paprika. Set aside.

Return pot to heat.

Whisk in flour and simmer until bubbly (1 minute). Gradually add milk, goat cheese and shredded Jarlsberg. Cook over very low heat, stirring constantly until mixture is creamy and thickens slightly. Return pasta to the pot and toss until coated; mix in diced American cheese. Transfer to prepped casserole dish and sprinkle with buttered breadcrumbs. Bake 30 minutes or until center is bubbly-hot and crumbs are golden. Serves 8-10.

VARIATIONS:

When combining pasta with cheese sauce, fold in:

• 2 cups cooked small shrimp (or one can of

tuna, drained) with 1 cup frozen petite peas.

• 2 cups each chopped cooked beef and mushrooms.

• 2 cups each cubed kielbasa or ham and

chopped grape tomatoes. Instead of buttered breadcrumb topping, top with crushed, lightly salted tortilla chips.

• 2 cups each chopped cooked chicken and broccoli florets.

• 2 cups cauliflower florets with 1 cup cooked crumbled bacon.

The 10 rooms are fur- nished more or less as a Victori- an family might have had them - the kitchen has a pie safe and the library; a portrait showing the young Dr. Meux on his way to join the Confederate Army. The Meux home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 1975.

Forestiere Underground Gardens Tour The Underground Gardens are the life-long devotion and hobby of Baldas- sare Forestiere (1879-1946), a Sicilian immigrant who came to

America in 1901 to escape the iron rule of his wealthy father and pursue his own dreams. The Gardens are a subterra- nean complex of patios, grottos, and garden courts intercon- necting with passageways that encircle the living quarters of self-taught artist and builder who sought to escape the bru- tal head of Fresno Summers.

Way Off Starboard

A s the 5 th largest city in the state of Califor-

nia, Fresno has a lot to be known for; from

being #1 in the nation for agricultural pro-

duction, to being home of the famous Fresno State Bulldogs. One of the things not mentioned during this topic of conversation is how Fresno also has one hell of an underground artist/music scene. Deep within the pulsating underground is a music scene utterly dripping with talent; it thrives in all different genres, R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, Metal, Blues, you name it. However, unless you’re one of these talented artists, or friends of a talented artist, or just running in to a performance night at a club or venue via happenstance, chances

are you aren’t going to hear much about whom these groups or individuals are and what they’re doing. Here at The Valley’s Nickel we decided to fix that.

We sat down with local alternative rock group, Way Off Starboard, and asked them a few questions to find out who they are and what they’re all about.

cian. We simply love them all and have assimilated them into our individual style which produces our bands music. We take careful consideration in the construction of our songs. We believe that even the slightest detail can make a significant impact on the listener’s emotions. We take the time to listen to each other’s input into the song as well as the time to follow thru on a concept or idea one of us may have. This is the engine that generates the style we have created. It is a conglomeration of everything we have been exposed to until this point in our lives. Way off Starboard is the sum of its parts.

First off, who’s who in the band?

Brendan Kelly – Vocals Daryl Bryson – Guitar left and backing vocals Chris Denton – Guitar right John Albertson – Bass and backing vocals Nick Anderson – Drums and percussion

What’s the story behind the name ‘Way Off Starboard’?

[Brendan] A little over a year ago Daryl, Denton, and I were sitting in the driveway jamming out, putting together our set list. We were brain- storming names, and Denton is throwing out whatever he sees. And he starts pushing “Fence Post.” Good for a laugh, but no. So we go on and play another song, and when it’s over Denton shakes his head and quietly says, “that was way off starboard.” That’s it. Maybe it was since he had just started flight lessons, I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t think he does either; it’s not something I’ve heard him say before or since. But we liked the sound of it.

Describe your sound. Why that particular style?

Our sound is contributed to a collage of musical influences we each bring to the band. Our influ- ences range from folk, rock, metal, indie, alterna- tive, 80s, 90s, etc….let’s face it there is no shortage of great influences out there for the aspiring musi-

LOCAL MUSIC

yeah, my best friend/roommate is a bass player, we have been playing together a while now, he could be here in like 5 minutes if you want?” And that’s it, we were complete. Oh yeah, and they happen to both be insanely talented, creative, personalities that fit right in with us, and much like Daryl and Chris they have been playing together for years. It was such an obvious and natural collaboration, especially since we basically came together through online band blind dating.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?

[Brendan] Not really, we all seem pretty calm before a show. Personally, I just try and get twenty minutes to myself somewhere where I can warm up my voice and do some thinking about what’s gonna go down. You don’t really get a moment with your thoughts around this group because there is always a good time going on. It’s pretty hard to ever get nervous around these guys, plenty of tension breaking going on. But if we get the chance Daryl, Chris, John and I will do a warm up exercise harmonizing acapella Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young’s Price of Freedom.

What do you imagine people doing while listening to your music? Are they relaxing, partying, making out?

Nick - I would be happily content with opening for the Rolling Stones or Tool.

Any plans to play out of town, maybe tour?

Those are in the goals that we have set for our- selves, but we are still in our infancy. Recording our EP is taking precedence over touring right now. We feel that we need to have legitimate media that we can share with the venue hold- ers throughout the valley before we can pursue touring.

The biggest hurdle we face second to not being able to dedicate all of our time to this

is recording our material. Because we all have

lives in addition to our commitments to our band recording is a necessary time consuming endeavor. To try and recreate the ambiance and synergy of

a live performance onto a well balanced recording

requires precise attention to detail. We are all most

definitely up for the task and dedicated to the messages our music portrays and the emotions it evokes.

Where can people find your music? Do you have an EP they can buy?

Well the EP is in progress, but we do have some rough videos on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/wayoffstarboard and acoustic material on Reverbnation www.reverbnation.com/wayoffstarboard We also keep photos and updates on Insta- gram. #wayoffstarboard #WoS. And of course there is our Facebook page www.facebook.com/wayoffstarboard

What’s next for Way Off Starboard? Shows, merchandise, music video, world domination

[Brendan] Well, the next big thing is opening for Everlast at Fulton 55 on Sept. 19th. You can buy tickets by contacting us at any one of our previous- ly mentioned sites. After that, we are concentrating on recording and playing a few shows to keep the excitement level up as that process continues. Of course, shirts, and other merchandise are all in the plans. I don’t think any of us have any desires for world domination, but if we could find a slice of the world that allows us to make a living doing what we love, we would take it.

Lastly, why should everyone come see you live? What kind of experience should they expect?

[Daryl] You should come to see us live because there is always an energy present whether you’re hanging out with us in the parking lot or whirling your hair around while we play in front of you. It’s the energy you brought with you, we just trans- mute it into music and words that you’re com- pelled to express in the ways that you do. From what I have witnessed from the shows we have played I would say you can expect to be impressed. How you show that is purely a personal preference but I have seen moshing, head banging, hair whirl- ing, small groups moving in unison, and I have seen intense stares of introspective observation. We welcome all the reactions to our music and hope that you will come out and catch a good show and hang out with us. n

will come out and catch a good show and hang out with us. n [Daryl] You

[Daryl] You know to be completely honest with you, I imagine that everyone is doing one or more of the things you mentioned. I suppose it would depend on which song they were listening to. We have such a broad range in our style from song to song that by the time we have finished our set you would have relaxed, partied, and possibly had or currently are making out. That’s just surface contact. I would like to think that by the time you had heard the songs nearly a half dozen times that you would have noticed the intricacies that were unawares to you in previous listens. I also imagine that you would start to actually listen for the words, the messages they convey, and hopefully you would find, through our music, relevance to your life experiences or feelings. Because at the end that is what music does for us as human beings. It bridges the gap between our ears and our emotions which evokes a memory we so dearly don’t want to forget.

Who’s your dream band to open for?

Brendan - Biffy Clyro without question. Never heard of them? Do yourself a favor and look them up.

Daryl - My dream band to open for would defi- nitely have to be Tool. I grew up listening to them and their influence has been an integral part of my style.

John - What I want is no longer available to me or anyone for that matter. I would love to open for Led Zeppelin but then again I am not alone.

Chris - I would be living a dream if I could open for either Breaking Benjamin or Tool.

How did the band come together? How did you all meet?

[Brendan] Band Mix! Well about

a month after I moved out here

Daryl, Chris, and another guy hit me up from Band Mix to sing for the band they were start- ing and then that project slowly fell apart. I was pretty bummed to lose the connection and creativ-

ity of those two, but after 4 months

I had put my own set together again.

I had started hitting up open mics

for a couple months, when Daryl sent me a message wanting to do an acoustic project with just the two of us. I jumped at the chance. We had maybe two practices when Chris sends me

a message wanting to start a project with him

and I. I told him, “Well Daryl and I just started playing together again, why don’t you come join us, perfect.” Honestly that’s what I wanted. When

I went looking for other musicians I couldn’t

have asked for two better people to collaborate with. We have always had a real open communi- cation, and they are the best two guitar players that I have ever worked with. They played together before this for years in the local group Dislodic, and through the years they have developed a style that is all their own. I think it’s pretty special, and I am very thankful I get to write, sing, and perform with their creations. So the three of us spent probably 8 months, writing, and performing acoustic shows sporadically, waiting, and looking for a rhythm section. We had a drummer or two, and a bassist or two come through but nothing

that ever panned out. Then, Band Mix struck again. I saw an account Nick had started. I think he said he was on there like a week before we hit him up. Then I think it was the second practice we had with Nick that we started talking, “Alright now we need a bass player.” Nick drops the, “Oh
