Troy Grays is a ten year old boy who was in an automobile accident on Thanksgiving Day, 2009, that resulted in severe head injuries and a broken neck. He will have to wear a neck brace for the rest of his life, and also cope with the problems from the head injuries. Troy lost his two sisters in the accident and is going through some very hard times in his young life. His mother is a single mom, who not only is dealing with the pain of losing two daughters, and her son’s severe injuries, she also is facing huge medical bills. A benefit dinner and auction will be held on Saturday, April 24, at the Trufant Complex in Trufant. Donations are needed for the auction. If you have any outdoor items, household items, gift certificates, any sellable items, even animals, please contact Charles (Chuck) or Diana Petersen at 616984-6027. Proceeds will go towards the outstanding hospital and mounting medical bills. Please help this family in need with any donations you may have.

Who would’ve guessed a piano could be so much fun? Don’t miss Bob Milne in Carson City on Friday, March 19
CARSON CITY – Bob Milne, designated a “national treasure” by the Library of Congress, will dazzle the audience with an evening of “Ragtime and Early Jazz” in the beautiful entrance lobby inside Carson City Hospital on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m. This unique event is a fundraiser for the Carson CityCrystal Area Schools Foundation (CCCASF), with proceeds used to purchase education supplies and enhance facilities in order to benefit the students and the community of Carson City-Crystal Area Schools. Milne performed in Carson City to benefit the CCCASF last year, as well. “The hospital lobby is a fabulous venue for a performance like this,” said CCCASF member Jennifer Churchill. “The baby grand piano is already right there in the lobby, and will be professionally tuned that day by local piano builder Alex Kapetyn for this special performance. It’s really going to be a fun evening out.” An extremely popular, highly regarded concert pianist, Milne started out as a young saloon player in the Dakota Inn Rathskeller in Detroit. “I’m just a saloon piano player!” Milne has said, despite his world-wide accolades, including being designated a “national treasure” in 2004 by the Librarian of Congress, Dr. James Billington. Milne has been featured on the Ragtime page in the Library of Congress’ “Music, Theatre and Dance” section, where interviews with Milne and a video of his Library of Congress concert are featured. “Bob Milne has been named a Musical Ambassador by the U.S. State Department, traveling to places such as Japan and Ireland, and performing for the President of the United States in 2007,” said Churchill. “He’s also produced piano recordings, composed ragtime and classical music, and written several books. After an amazing performance here last year, we’re so excited he’ll be coming back to Carson City.” A resident of Lapeer, Michigan, Milne performs around the country and the world. Tickets may be purchased at the door, from any Foundation member, by contacting Nancy Seals at 989-5843131 ext. 379, or at the Carson City-Crystal Central Office at 115 E. Main in Carson City. Limited tickets are available. There will be freewill donation refreshments and snacks served during the performance.

Feinstein Challenge aids Helping Hands

From March 1st through April 30th, the Fight Against Hunger movement, sponsored by the noted philanthropist, Alan Feinstein, is offering their yearly challenge. During these two months only, any monetary and/or food donations made to Helping Hands will be totaled and the amount reported to the Feinstein Foundation in order to qualify Helping Hands for a portion of the one million dollars that has been set aside to match funds. The amount Helping Hands receives will be its portion when all the qualifying food pantries in the United States have submitted their donation amounts. The more Helping Hands collects, the larger the percentage they will receive. Donations may be taken to either Howard City bank (Firstbank or Independent), dropped off at the pantry during regular open hours, or mailed directly to Helping Hands at P. O. Box 532, Howard City, MI 49329. (If a receipt is needed, a request, along with your name and address, must accompany checks.) The goal is to collect as much as possible during the above time frame so that Helping Hands will receive a greater amount of the million dollars and all involved with Helping Hands wish to thank, in advance, each and every one who contributes to help meet this challenge.

Perfect Day for Winter Fun on the North Country Trail
The members of the West Michigan Chapter of the North Country Trail Association had a beautiful day of winter fun at the Loda Lake Wildflower Preserve on Saturday February 20th. The weather was perfect - warm sun, mild temperatures, and no wind. After starting the day by enjoying delicious pastries with fellow participants, it was time to strap on snowshoes or cross-country skis for a delightful hike around Loda Lake. At the end of the scenic and sunny trek it was back to the Birch Grove Schoolhouse, the Chapter’s base in Newaygo County located a few miles north of White Cloud, for more good food and enjoyable company. About the North Country Trail The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) is 4,600 miles long stretched across seven states. Thousands of hikers find their way onto a section of the NCT each year. Whether it is winter camping and snowshoeing, long-distance trail running in summer, or a quiet autumn weekend with the grandkids, you can find what you’re looking for on the North Country Trail. Opportunities for a day, week, month or more abound on the trail. Some quick facts about the North Country Trail: n Longest hiking path in the United States n Managed by the National Park Service n Passes through 10 National Forests n Created by Congress in only 1980 n Beginning in upstate New York, the trail passes through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and ending in central North Dakota To learn more about the trail, or the North Country Trail Association, visit www.northcoutrytrail.org About the West Michigan Chapter of the North Country Trail Association With more than 250 members, our purpose is to promote the North Country National Scenic Trail and to build and maintain the Trail in Michigan’s Kent and Newaygo counties. Wren Boys at the Dogwood Center on March 17
Come enjoy St. Patrick’s Day at the Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts with The Wren Boys! If you enjoy the sounds of all types of Celtic music, come and check these guys out! This Celtic/Rock group is gaining great popularity in the West Michigan area. They won the WYCE 88.1 FM Jammie Award for the best worldbeat act in 2008 and have quite an extensive array of instrumentation ability. To get a sense of the Wren Boys music visit www.myspace. com/thewrenboys and listen to some of their music tracks. One of the tracks “Copper Harbour”, an acoustic small pipe/fiddle set, starts in a haunting manner and gives way to an energetic piece that is quite beautiful. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. The Dogwood Center Box Office is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and one hour prior to an event. For information, phone 231.924.8885.

To The ediTor: I went to the community forum meeting Monday, March 1st. After listening to everything about closing schools, firing teachers and possible concessions to the teacher contracts. I left the meeting in shock. From what I understand some not all teachers are opposed to any contract concessions. The choice is simple we fire 15+ teachers or they take some concessions. They would rather have their coworkers fired than have to take concessions. My concern is our children are with these teachers 6-7 hours a day. They spend more time with our children than we do on a weekday basis. What kind of morals and behaviors are we allowing to be taught to our children. I am not sure about you but, myself this is not acceptable behavior I want my child to exhibit. Shouldn’t we teach our children compassion, understanding, and not teach them to stomp on anyone to get ahead. I am not confident that this thought process the teachers are exhibiting are something I want passed on to my child. Like it or not teachers are role models. When the behavior of a teacher impacts education or behavior of our children then that is a problem. Maybe we should be taking a second look at these teachers who are willing to throw one under the bus to save the cost of healthcare. As I look at it they are lucky to have a job. They should be fortunate they are not in the unemployment line like most of our state. Be grateful you have a job and try and help save those of whose jobs are on the line. “We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have. (Frederick Koeniq)” MaTThew Mulholland

MCC seeks community input
Thank you to the Howard City VFW for allowing me to proudly represent Tri County Schools in their Teacher of the Year program. I was honored to be chosen! I appreciate the support and enthusiasm for our school system, myself and all the great teachers in it! Thank you, too, for your generous check which I will spend on computer programs that will benefit the students in my classroom for many years. Jan Malmo, Macnaughton elementary 2nd grade looping teacher SIDNEY – Montcalm Community College is hosting a series of public forums to gather input from people in the communities it serves. MCC President Bob Ferrentino said the purpose of the gatherings is to give people a voice in planning for the future as the college continues to focus on how to best serve the educational needs of the community during the nation’s difficult economic times. “We have spent the last few months discussing our future and putting together the initial pieces of a new institutional strategic plan,” Ferrentino said. “As we continue to work on this important topic, we would like people to share with us their thoughts, ideas and dreams for the college.” The sessions include: n March 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at MCC’s Panhandle Area Center in Howard City, 1401 S. Ensley St., Howard City. n March 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room D303 in MCC’s Beatrice E. Doser Building, 2800 College Drive, Sidney. n March 18 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at MCC’s M-TEC, 1325 Yellow Jacket Drive, Greenville. “MCC is truly a community asset and we want the voice of the community included in our planning,” Ferrentino said. A light meal will be served during each meeting. Please RSVP three days prior to the meeting by contacting MCC Advancement Office Assistant Lisa Herald by e-mail at lborton@montcalm.edu or call her at 989-328-1210.

The top 10 most popular dogs in the U.S.
StatePoint Media
It’s a good time to have four furry legs. Pet ownership has surged over the past twenty years, and dogs in particular are enjoying major popularity. But whether you already own a pooch or are searching for one that’s right for you, it’s interesting to note which are the most popular dogs in America. For the 19th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America, but could this be the last year for the Lab’s reign? According to American Kennel Club (AKC) 2009 registration statistics, the German Shepherd overtook the Yorkie and is now ranked second most popular in the nation for the first time in more than three decades. An American favorite since the time of Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd became the number one breed of the 1920s, but slipped in popularity until after World War II. “Labs have been America’s top dog for nearly two decades due to their loyal and gentle nature,” said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “But the German Shepherd has gained ground recently, quite possibly due to the increased attention they receive for their security efforts at home and abroad, and search and rescue efforts in Haiti.” The most popular dogs in the country according to the AKC are: 1. Labrador Retriever 2. German Shepherd Dog 3. Yorkshire Terrier 4. Golden Retriever 5. Beagle 6. Boxer 7. Bulldog 8. Dachshund 9. Poodle 10. Shih Tzu The type of dog you choose can say a lot about your personality. Labrador Retrievers are an ideal sporting and family dog. Millions of Americans own and love Labs because of their even temperament, trainability and family-friendly nature. German Shepherds are hailed as the world’s leading police, guard, and military dog, however this dependable breed is more than its nine-to-five job. Energetic, approachable and fearless, German Shepherds are loyal family pets and good guard dogs, the ideal choice for many families. Yorkies offer big personalities in small packages. They serve as great companions for all ages, due to their loving personality and convenient, portable size. With their friendly temperament, intelligence and eagerness to please, Golden Retrievers are popular as family companions. This active and energetic Sporting breed can adapt to many different living situations but requires daily exercise in order to thrive. Beagles make wonderful family pets due to their merry personalities, compact size, and easy-care coat. Curious and comedic, they often follow their noses, which can sometimes lead to a little mischief. Selecting the right dog for

Peer pressure can be good for your health
North AmericAN Precis syNdicAte
There’s good news, bad news and better news about fitness for older Americans. The good news is that just as peer pressure can affect how you act when you’re young, it can encourage adults to stick to their exercise regimen. That’s important, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says every week, older adults need at least: • 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (brisk walking), 75 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic activity (jogging or running) or a combination of both; and • muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). The bad news, according to an AARP survey, is that more than six in 10 adults aged 45 and older say they exercise less than they did five years ago. The better news is that in order to encourage older Americans to live healthier lives, AARP provides free support to anyone interested in becoming a “Fitness Ambassador” by starting a walking program. Fitness Ambassadors are everyday people, such as retirees and others interested in health and fitness. One such is Cathy Nemerovski. While exercise has always been an integral part of her life, she didn’t train to become a gym instructor until her 50s. A year ago, a broken foot forced her to re-evaluate her exercise regimen. “I had just turned 60 and because of my injury, I had gotten a glimpse into what it would be like to be getting older and having your body change. So I decided I wanted to focus my teaching on

Long Life Prescription
(NAPSI) — The prescription for a longer, healthier life may lie between the pages of a handy new paperback. “Long Life Prescription” offers easy, effective ways to repair your body, combat ailments and stay energized at any age. Based on more than 500 clinical studies and interviews with more than 100 top doctors, the book offers proven and specific keys to living well. Learn: n How vacationing can lower your risk for heart disease n Which parts of your body can regenerate--and how to speed up the process n How dark chocolate and red wine can fight free radicals to combat age-related health concerns n Why lactose-intolerant people can get even more calcium from rhubarb, dried figs, and beans (the anti-aging superfood) than dairy n How sunshine can prevent the flu and physical activity twice a week can cut your risk of Alzheimer’s in half. With this book, readers may be able to improve their general well being, fight aging and increase their vitality in the process by examining their habits and lifestyle choices, assessing any damage already done and creating a repair plan. Published by Reader’s Digest, “Long Life Prescription” is available wherever books are sold.

seniors.” As a Fitness Ambassador, Nemerovski organizes weekly educational sessions and walks, and provides information, opportunities and incentive to older adults to get moving and healthy. “I find if you’re evolving as a person as you’re doing something for others, you’re on a journey together. My students give me way more than I give them. It’s a wonderful experience.” Fitness Ambassadors get training and support from the Lifelong Fitness Alliance, an organization that seeks to bridge the gap between knowledge and action

when it comes to fitness and healthy living. Lifelong Fitness Alliance staff are available to counsel Fitness Ambassadors about the progress, challenges and needs of their group. “This gives me the perfect platform to help people,” said Nemerovski. “I really enjoy inspiring people to make changes in their lives. Walking is something everyone can do.” If you want to make a personal commitment to improve fitness for midlife and older adults, contact step@lifelongfitnessalliance.org or call (650) 361-8282 for more information.

Meet Nettie - A sweet fluffy cat who’s looking for a new home! She’s just one of the many cats and dogs available for adoption at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter in Stanton. Nettie is an adult longhaired cat, about 13 lbs. (most of that fur!) and has attractive gray/ brown tabby markings. She was brought into the shelter on February 3rd, and is available for adoption immediately. One of her favorite habits is kneading blankets with her paws - she’s very affectionate, very easy-going, and very friendly. Nettie’s shelter ID# is 10/03/26. Many other cats besides Nettie are available to be adopted, and plenty of dogs too! Go online to

www.petfinder.com/shelters/montcalm.html
for a full list of adoptable animals.
There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the animal is “fixed” already. The Montcalm County Animal Shelter is open to the public Monday thru Friday from 12:30pm to 5pm. Call 989-831-7355 or 616225-7355 for more information. New animals are brought into the shelter on a daily basis, so if the one you want is gone by the time you call, the Montcalm County Animal Shelter will do its best to find you a dog or cat that matches what you’re looking for! 154 W. March 4 A weight loss journey when you have as much weight to lose as we each do, is definitely a marathon and not a sprint. We are both doing many things that are great steps in the direction of long term weight loss. We are making better food choices, spray butter instead of margarine on everything, and making better decisions like walking from the outside edge of a parking lot instead of driving in circles trying to find the closest spot to the store. These types of changes will help us to reach our ultimate goals and maintain from there. I am starting to enjoy working out a bit. I have started this week an 8 week podcast that is an 8 week course on moving from a couch potato to running a 5K. I have no intention of running a 5K, but am enjoying learning to run a bit! The course will probably take me more than 8 weeks, but it’s a good start. Jodie is still struggling to work out on a regular basis. It will come for her, I am sure of it! We all do these things in our own time and I have no doubt Jodie will be kicking my butt in the workout area in no time. Due to the change in the timing of this article, we didn’t have to provide our weight and measurements, so our goals for the next report is: Jodie @ 230 (18 lbs. lost) and Jamie @ 199 (17 lbs. lost). Wish us luck!! Until next time: Jamie and Jodie

Health Matters
Help For Heartburn
By Tresa Erickson
The older you get, the more heartburn you seem to experience. What once occurred two or three times a year now occurs monthly, if not weekly. Isn't there some way you can put an end to the madness? Perhaps, but only if you are willing to make some changes in your diet and the way you eat. Many acidic and high-fat foods irritate the stomach lining and reduce pressure in the lower sphincter muscle, compromising its ability to stop stomach acids from splashing back up into the esophagus and causing heartburn. In order to find out exactly what foods cause you heartburn, you must keep a food diary. Only then will you know for certain what you should and should not be eating. Spicy and fried foods are known for causing heartburn. Specific foods that may pose a problem for you include: • Buffalo wings • Brownies • Butter cookies • Chicken nuggets • Chocolate • Coffee • Corn chips • Cottage cheese • Cranberry juice • Creamy/oily salad dressings • Doughnuts • Grapefruit juice • Ground beef • Ice cream • Lemons & lemonade • Liquor & wine • Macaroni & cheese • Marbled sirloin • Orange juice • Potato chips • Potato salad • Soda • Sour cream • Spaghetti with marinara sauce • Tea • Tomatoes Again, the only way to know for sure if these foods will cause you heartburn is to eat them and record the after-effects in your food diary. You might find that spaghetti doesn't bother you as much as orange juice and potato salad do. Along with watching the foods you eat, you need to make some changes in your consumption of them. Eat slowly and eat less. The quicker you eat, the less likely you are to feel full and the more you will eat. The more food you eat, the longer it will sit in your stomach and the more likely it will stir up acid. You might also want to keep some safe snacks around that you can eat. Some of the foods known for neutralizing stomach acid and keeping heartburn at bay include: • Avocados • Bananas • Breads & cereals • Broccoli • Carrots • Crackers • Green beans • Oatmeal • Papayas • Peas • Pineapple • Rice There is no surefire, quick fix for heartburn. You can, however, keep it at bay by identifying what triggers it and eating in moderation.

For those of us that have suffered with depression, this statement may seem a little cruel. There are many different kinds of depression. I used to have bouts of cyclic depression that would last three or four days. Many have seasonal depression. Then there is reactive depression and finally endogenous depression. All forms of depression are caused by a reduction of neurotransmitters. These are chemicals made in our brain. Their job is to help nerve cells communicate with each other to perform a specific task. The task of keeping our moods stable and on the happy side is a complicated one. What we think about, causes certain chemicals to be released and these chemicals determine our mood. Worry and anxious thoughts cause the neurotransmitters to be used up faster than they can be made and consequently this depletion causes us to have the feelings that we call depression. Feeling this, is like seeing the red warning light show up on the dash of your car. Its purpose is to tell you something is wrong. In my case there were certain thoughts and thinking patterns that I had learned in childhood that needed to be updated. In seasonal depression, these feelings mean you need more sunshine. Melatonin is a chemical that must have full spectrum natural light to be made by the brain. Fluorescent lights contribute to the problem. Endogenous depression is usually caused by a deficiency in our nutrition. Reactive depression is part of grief and loss. Remember, the feeling of depression is a warning. Instead of just taking a medication to raise the neurotransmitter levels, it is better to look for the cause. Fixing the cause will permanently remove those feelings of depression. Sunshine, full spectrum lighting, hypnotherapy, good nutrition, homeopathic remedies for unresolved grief, and supplements to naturally restore the balance the neurotransmitters will solve this problem. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Depression is often a good thing. It tells us that something is wrong.
