Our Physicians & Medical Staff

Dr. Arata is an accomplished physician, internationally respected for his work in
Interventional Medicine. He has performed over 2000 TVAM procedures with a technical
success rate of 99% and a clinical (patient response) success rate in excess of 90%. The
medical staff at Synergy Health are dedicated to making your experience comfortable
and worry-free.

Am I a Candidate for the TVAM Procedure?

In order to determine if you are a candidate for the TVAM procedure, Dr. Michael Arata
will review your medical history and imaging, if applicable. This review will be followed
by a phone consultation, during which the specifics of your medical condition will be
discussed. Our preliminary evaluation functions as a screening process to ensure patient
safety and to identify those patients who are the best candidates for treatment. The
determination to treat a patient is based on risk/benefit analysis and medical necessity.
Treatment is not dependent on having a neurologic condition. It is based on having
dysautonomia. Dysautonomia is common in patients with MS, Lyme, POTS, Fibromyalgia,
Chronic Fatigue, and other neurologic diseases and conditions.

Abnormal autonomic function associated with various neurological diseases and other
conditions can be clinically diagnosed based on a common set of symptoms. These
symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, altered cognitive function, cold or heat
intolerance, headaches upon awakening, and bladder or bowel dysfunction. Patients who
experience symptoms of autonomic dysfunction often experience symptomatic benefits
that greatly improve their quality of life after the procedure.

Clinical Success Rates

Greater than 90% of patients treated at Autonomic Specialists for autonomic dysfunction
(dysautonomia) via the TVAM procedure respond positively, showing improved cognitive
function, energy levels, reduced or resolved headaches, sleep disturbances, and thermal
intolerance. Also, bladder and bowel function often also improve.
Treatment response can be immediate. Some patients describe sensations such as a
lifting of brain fog or warming of hands and feet during the procedure. Additional
symptom relief occurs over the course of weeks to months as the effect of improved ANS
(autonomic nervous system) function influences other organ systems.
The majority of patients (approximately 75%) have a durable response lasting over two
years and beyond with no degradation or relapse. This group of patients is able to
maintain the benefits of the procedure seen from day one. The remaining 25% of patients
initially respond well to treatment but the effect is not durable. Of the patients in this
group, about half (12% of total patients) will see no benefits two months post procedure.

The TVAM Procedure

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis at Autonomic Specialists state-ofthe-art medical facility. The patient will receive I.V. sedation to maintain comfort
throughout the procedure, and the procedure will typically take approximately one hour
to perform.
The primary treatment is an endovascular procedure in which a catheter is inserted via a
small incision in the groin and threaded up into the jugular vein. A balloon is then
inflated via the catheter, applying mechanical energy to the nerve fibers that surround
the jugular vein.
The majority of patients experience little to no discomfort following their procedure,
and they are typically able to resume normal activity within two days.

Treatment costs are determined on an individual basis, which is dependent upon each
patients insurance provider. The patients co-insurance or out-of-pocket costs will not
exceed $11,000 USD.
The Autonomic Specialists treatment program fee includes:
