MAKE YOUR OWN CUSHION

Use these instructions to make an easy

envelope cushion.

3. For the envelope back, you need

two pieces of fabric. Make a pattern
for these that measures the same
width as for the front but about twothirds the length, e.g. 53cm x 35cm.

4. Lay out your fabric for the front

of the cushion. Make sure its nice
and flat.

One metre of fabric
Paper (wider than the inner)
Pinking shears

2. Using this measurement, make

a paper pattern to use as a guide
to cut out the fabric. Make a pattern
for the front of the cushion first.

1.To begin, measure your cushion

inner. Add a 1.5cm seam allowance
to each of the four sides. So, for
a 50cm x 50cm inner, youll cut a
piece of fabric 53cm x 53cm.

5. Place the pattern on the

fabric and pin it in place.

Tip:
Cut a nice straight line, as close
to the pattern as possible.

10. Cut out the fabric for the two

back panels of the cushion.

7. Lay out your fabric for the back

of the cushion. Youll be cutting
both back pieces at once.

8. Again, make sure the fabric is

nice and flat.

9. Place the pattern on the fabric

and pin it in place. Dont pin along
the folded edge.

12. Unpin the patterns. You should

now have one piece of fabric for the
front and two for the back.

13. Before you sew all the pieces

together, you need to hem one long
edge on each of the back panels.

Fold the fabric over to the length

of the paper pattern.

11. When you get to the folded

edge, slip your scissors into the
fold and cut sideways.

Set your sewing gauge to 1cm

and use it as a guide to fold along
the edge of the fabric.

6. Cut out the fabric for the front

of the cushion.

14. Iron the seam flat as you fold.

15. Repeat, this time folding

over 1.5cm.
(This contains the fraying edge.)

16. Pin as you go in preparation for

sewing. Do this to one long edge of
each back panel.

17. You should now have two

back panels, each with one long
edge hemmed.

18. Now its time to arrange your

fabric pieces to sew together!
Take your front piece of fabric
and lay it right side up.

19. Lay one of the back panels on

top, right side down. The hemmed
edge should be the inner edge.

20. Lay the second panel over this,

as shown.

21. Pin the layers in place, with

the pins at right angles to the
fabric, so theyre easier to pull
out as you sew.

Sew the seams with your machine

set to straight stitch.

23. You should now have a

sewn up cushion cover. Just some
finishing touches to go.

24. Snip off each corner.

This removes excess fabric, so you
can push the corners out to a point.

Now, youre all ready to sew!

With your machine set to straight
stitch, start half way along one
edge. Remember to do a couple
of reverse stitches so the seam
doesnt unravel. Sew all four sides,
turning at each pencilled corner.

26. Time to see your handiwork!

Turn the cushion cover right side
out. Using your pencil, push out the
corners so theyre nice and pointy.

25. Now grab your pinking shears

and cut along each edge.
This stops the edges of the fabric
from fraying.
If you dont have pinking
shears, sew along the edges
using zigzag stitch.

27. Give your cover a quick iron.

28. Insert the inner.

29. And thats it a completed

cushion. Arent you clever!

22. Mark corner turnings before

you sew. Use your gauge to
measure 1.5cm in on each corner,
placing a dot with your pencil.
