JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, formerly known as Joint Electron Device Engineering Council(s) (JEDEC), is the semiconductor engineering standardisation body of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), a trade association that represents all areas of the electronics industry in the United States. Digit 1 Digit 1 = Diode Letter 2 Subsequent digits

Digit 2 = Bipolar transistor

Serial number of device

3 = Field-effect transistor (FET) 1N4004 would be a diode and a 2N3053 would be a NPN Transistor . Pro-Electron Coding System Table Pro Electron is the European type designation and registration system for active components (such as semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, sensor devices, electronic tubes and cathode ray tubes). First Letter Specifies semiconductor material A Germanium (or any semiconductor with junctions in a material with a band gap of 0.6 to 1.0eV) B Silicon (or band gap of 1.0 to 1.3eV) C Transistor - audio frequency, low power C Semiconductors like gallium arsenide with a band gap of 1.3eV or more D Transistor - audio frequency, power D Semiconductors with a band gap less than 0.6eV Second Letter Specifies type of device A Diode - low power or signal B Diode - variable capacitance Subsequent Characters The characters following the first twoletters form the serial number of the device. Those intended for domestic use have three numbers, but those intended for commercial or industrial use have letter followed by two

E Tunnel diode E Tubes with a 6.3V heater P Tubes for a 300mA series heater supply R Devices without junctions, e.g. photoconductive cells S Solitary digital integrated circuits T Linear integrated circuits F Transistor - high frequency, low power G Miscellaneous devices H Diode - sensitive to magnetism L Transistor - high frequency, power

numbers, i.e. A10 - Z99.

U Tubes for a 100mA series heater supply OR mixed digital/analogue integrated circuits N Photocoupler P Light detector Q Light emitter R Switching device, low power, e.g. thyristor, diac, unijunction S Transistor - switching low power T Switching device, low power, e.g. thyristor, triac U Transistor - switching, power W Surface acoustic wave device X Diode multiplier Y Diode rectifying

Z Diode - voltage reference
