III) SOOT BLOWER CONTROL (SBC)

The SBC is of Microprocessor based and built by using the Max - DNA hardware, implemented as
part of SG-DDCMIS. It houses the equipments required for auto sequential operation and remote
manual operation of soot blower and its valves from HMI in SG-DDCMIS. Commissioning of soot
blower control in SG-DDCMIS is necessary before operation of soot blowers as all limit switches and
pushbuttons are wired to SG-DDCMIS and operation commands are issued through SG-DDCMIS
only. Pressure & temperature controls of SB system is also implemented in SG-DDCMIS.
The system permits any group of soot blowers in sequence, if necessary and permits omission of any
soot blower(s) in a cycle. The blowers can be operated in groups. Only one group programme is
operable at a time. Maximum two blowers are envisaged to operate at a time in sequence from the
same group.
The blowers are grouped in different groups as below:i.
Pair operation of Wall Blowers
- P1
ii.
Single operation of Wall Blowers
- P2
iii.
Pair operation of LR Blowers
- P3
iv.
Single operation of LR Blowers
- P4
v.
Pair operation of AH Blowers
- P5
vi.
Single operation of AH Blowers
- P6

BHEL to ensure that the same

sequences will be used for operation of
future blowers.

When selecting two blowers for pair operation, pairing shall be made from blowers coming at opposite
sides of furnace as shown in scheme of soot blowing with valves, fittings and instrumentation.
Similarly for LR blowers also. For AH blowers blowers coming in RAPH-A & B primary to be
considered as one pair. Similarly for RAPH secondary also. Pair identification is indicated in clauseXII in detail.

IV) THE SOOT BLOWER CONTROL SYSTEM CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS
(REALISED IN SG-DDCMIS - HMI)
1) LOCAL / REMOTE SELECTION
REMOTE mode is selected for operating blowers in auto sequence or manually from HMI.
LOCAL mode is selected to issue a local start permit to SBMCC for operating blowers locally .
2) SEQUENCE SELECT (P1 to P5)
Blowers can be programmed in different auto sequences. An auto sequence can be selected by
pressing the required sequence button (P1 to P5). Only one auto sequence can be selected at a
time. Auto sequence can be reset by pressing the selected sequence button and RESET button.
3) START SEQ:To start the auto sequence START SEQ button has to be pressed along with selected sequence
Button.
4) STOP/RETRACT
STOP/RETRACT button when pressed will issue a command to stop the auto sequence and the
operating blower will be retracted back to home position.
5) RESET
After removing the fault condition, the RESET button will be pressed to reset the fault. To reset a
selected sequence RESET button has to be pressed along with the selected sequence button.

9561-101-01-TR-PVI-K-007 / Rev 02
PAGE No: 5 0F 10
6) MANUAL START
Any blower can be started manually from HMI by selecting the blower and giving a MANUAL
START command provided the required permissives are available.
7) DISABLE/ ENABLE
Any blower can be disabled / enabled by selecting the blower and pressing the DISABLE/
ENABLE button. Once disabled the particular blower will not be available for operation.
8) SEQUENCE CHECK
When pressed along with a sequence button will display all the blowers programmed in that
sequence on MIMIC.
9) AUXILIARY CONTROL
Soot blowing steam isolating valve and pressure reducing valves are also operated from HMI.
V) SB STARTERS (MCC) AND POWER SUPPLY
Each soot blower is provided with a starter which houses power supply ON/OFF switches for
outgoing feeders power contactors, thermal overload relays etc.
MCC will be having power supply ON/OFF Switches with fuses for Incomers, Ammeter (A) and
Voltmeter (V) with selector switches. Two incomers are provided with manual change over switches.
Jamming relay required for LR blower will be mounted in the MCC itself.
VI) CHECKS BEFORE STARTING SB OPERATION
1) Put ON' 415V, 3 Ph, AC Incoming and outgoing power supply switch in MCC ,
VII) INITIAL CONDITIONS
1) SB steam isolating valves and PRVs shall be in closed condition.
2) All the blowers shall be in Home position.
VIII)

SEQUENTIAL OPERATION
1)
2)
3)
4)

Switch on power supplies.

Select the group programme to be operated.
Ensure Initial Conditions
Open the SB main Isolation valve and control valves and allow the steam to drain. Since thermal
drain valves are controlled from SBC, this will modulate according to the temperature of the line
automatically and keep removing condensate, if any.
5) After attaining the required drain temperature & adequate steam pressure, give program start
command. The first blower/ first pair of blowers will start as per selected programme and the
sequence continues. Programme operating display glows to indicate the same. (MIMIC shows the
individual Blower operation)

IX) BLOWER OPERATION LOGICS
