Introduction: Humanitarian Logistics in emergency relief is the management of humanitarian emergency relief supplies from source to the beneficiaries efficiently and effectively. The basic task of a logistics system is to deliver the appropriate supplies, in good condition, in the quantities required, and at the places and time they are needed. Although mostly concerned with the movement of goods and equipment, relief logistics also encompass the relocation of disaster-affected people, transfer of casualties, and the movement of relief workers.

The Humanitarian Logistics Course focuses on the importance of logistics in the provision of assistance to communities as well as its place in the carrying out of other emergency management operations. This is a Logistics course designed for non-logisticians, neo-logisticians & experienced logistics coordinators, as well. Experienced logisticians will benefit from the broader application of logistics to emergency situations, building a knowledge bridge for deployment to humanitarian crises. The resulting course has been developed in close consultation with practitioners in the field. It incorporates the latest experiences, methods and practices used by the private sector, United Nations agencies and international non-governmental organisations. The course is part of RedR India's Training Programme, which aims to improve the effectiveness of specialist and non-specialist in emergency response. Course Contents: The course contains the following training blocks: Core Technical Sectors Examines logistics in relation to the Core Technical Sectors.

Control Systems Provides an introduction to the basic control systems that are used in all stages of the logistics process.

Storage and Warehousing Explains the key aspects of warehouse management and a working knowledge of storage requirements for food, non-food items, cold chain, dangerous goods, key aspects of storage management and the basic principles of stock control and information flow.

Supply and Transportation Develops an understanding of different transport options, the basic rules of road relief operations, the transport requirements for specialist items and people, and the documentation associated with the movement of goods.

Distribution Develop the ability to establish a workable distribution system.

Fleet Management Develop an understanding of the principles, management, maintenance and control systems of Fleet Management.

Contracts Explains the essential components of a contract, various types of contracts, and writing contracts for transport/fuel/employment/rental/purchase.

Staff Management Develops an understanding of the processes and procedures involved in staff recruitment, employment, training, promotion and discipline, termination.

Financial Management Develops an understanding of the basics of financial administration for emergency programmes, basics of budgetary controls, reporting back and record keeping.

Procurement Explains the key components of the procurement process, the elements of a clear specification and how to produce a tender document and purchase order.
