How Is The New Start Time Working For Each
Chandler Alden
Not Much Change at Chandler, it is Helping my Freshman At DHS, Daughter at Alden its not an issue Huge help for older son in 8th grade, 6th grader in in the same situation All kids benefits from the Change, as a mom I was worried but it has worked out with all activities Not working well, felt like it just happened, weighing DHS/DMS benefit vs Alden loss from brain standpoint, Alden change difficult, he won't get out of bed, change to the negative Easier for each vs. to get going, Daughter, wife, and me. Extra Time really helps Not working for me, Difficult to get Alden kids out; bus at 6:45 , waiting in auditorium due to early bus. Great for DMS sleeping longer, Great for Alden extra time from 2 to 3

Not much change at Chandler, Alden kid change affects entire family, driving to bus stop, have to wake kids, changing parenting. Working well - Pleasant a.m. routine for High Schooler, Kids doing very well, likes 8:30 start time hope it stays, 10th Grader not any more refreshed, staying up late, because of activities less time in afternoon, no benefits for her 8th grader unhappy activities running late. Going to bed later due to homework - getting pushed back, not happy about green band being shortened by 15 minutes 3rd grader is emotional, cried every time , tired in school all day doesn't like being in the PAC 15 minutes in the morning Who opposes Alden time vs. HS start - Love to know the #, guessing HS opposition is low. 4th, 6th and 8th, 4th working well 6th Like Sleeping in. Rides the bus 8am pickup, relieved not in dark anymore, 8th grader rides bike to school, working well Graduate, MS and HS parents thinks that its great for those ages Negative work at home parent, June & July B-day, Financial impact, hoping to gear up on chores but couldn't Working for 6th grader making it work for others, Thinks that there could be a better solution for younger kids Quality gone, 7:15-6 exhausted child 3rd. 20 window on bus pick up? Causing problems 11 yr old - okay is an early riser Bus, Young kids back, HS are better off starting later 1st and 3rd not working very hard year. Emotional/Exhausted 3rd grader Line in Duxbury get parent to commit to $ for recourses for change 4th grader - ADHD, coming off Meds, Looking forward to 14 yr old, watching 4th grader - can't happen, can't get enough sleep drive and school and drop-off line is bad 3rd Grader - early riser, but nature can't make the 7:08 bus (Started at 7:20) I now drive to school, gets more sleep and don't have to Sit in PAC, wakes up tired, comes home tired, poorer concentration. High schooler - issues seeing teachers for help, tale to work every Day, no family dinners, they would change back High schoolers rushing to cars after school to get to destination on time

Overwhelming. On Bus @ 7:01, arrive school @ 7:17 to PAC. DMS Student late for homeroom every day but 3 days for the entire year. One Child struggling academically. Not eating Breakfast Same bed time. Now getting 1 hour extra sleep, Kids always wait on/off bus at same school. Now kids eat breakfast Same bed time = more sleep Same bed time, get up earlier than last year run to finish homework, gets stuck in traffic Improved attitude, more sleep More play, wake kids up for first time Bus stop - All kids need to walk to bus affects all Bus early - Wait in PAC - not happy Choosing - leaving young ones in bed or wake to walk/drive to bus (Chandler students and younger) Same day-care help of neighbors needed/ Work hours needed to be cut/ DSU cost High/ Concerned about Bus sharing with DMS/DHS longer walk home Student staying up late to do homework Student not participating in Extra x

Chandler Alden
4 kids different ways, they get up and adapt, all been good, student union is working Extra hour of sleep @ DMS. Being out at bus stop in daylight is good After school schedule works Nothing Easier for my daughter to get at teacher, Kids at DMS/DHS that I teach are way more alert and relaxed Alden after school hour, extra sleep in morn for DHS, Activities ok The alarm Clock Alden after school activities good but are out weighted by negative other facts Nothing has worked (6 people responded various schools) Love that high schooler getting up in daylight had a hard time getting up in dark Kids getting adequate sleep grades vs. last year. More civilized in morning, not trouble w/homework, no trouble with sports Its been ok, surprisingly x x x x x

Practices and games Move many student in short period of time More awake in morning More Sleep - Benefit Going well - early to bed, early to rise, more time with younger son in morning - helpful academically Positive - LD - but make sure to have structure

What Is Not Working For You? Have You Been Able To Overcome This? How?
Chandler Alden
Logistics of Bus, No negatives for me Busses still not working Gridlock Traffic Disrupts continuity, I've had to change by parenting to yelling, homework not done, everything more difficult, after school sports affected Later in afternoon, busses still a little crazy Kids not falling asleep, School committee and superintendent not listening to data, fillibusting, bus time inconsistent, getting to class, kids more tired, too much discipline Getting up earlier but trade off for 7 years later

DMS

Getting all my kids up to go to 7am bus, 5th grader can't sleep that early, off field and in shaver to bed, takes away from quality of family life, more parents are driving Drop off at Alden only 1 drop of point, dangerous kids darting between cars, even arriving at library on-time kids marked tardy because Length of drop off time High schooler staying up later High School getting out later, rushing to work/sport/ less time to for homework, increased anxiety in HS because busses late to HS What are tardy rates at each school? Sitting in PAC when could be sleeping more transition in the early morning Alden Students eating breakfast at bus stop at 7:00 Driving Alden students to school helps overcome lack of sleep and sitting in PAC, can require getting Chandler student up Family time jeopardized/well being of children jeopardized. LONG DAY - 3rd grader; works hard every day, difficult to get thru homework, exhausted end of day x 5th grader- difficult get up early, working parents find it difficult managing all activities Chandler - do not see it working for them even w/rollback of activities bed time Busing 139 - Dangerous Intersection, A lot of driving early - Alden Circle Jammed Alden - "Not Working at All" Does not attend school same hours, interferes w/integration with peers and after school activities x Works because they have made it work, 8pm bed, no afterschool changed behaviors. x Had to Adjust to Disaster Forced to adapt - night owl children - difficult, is working Skeptical - See it Working beyond expectations Made his day more stressed and longer - napping mid week to catch up not enough benefit for older children Early morning, Child is over tired - long day Staying up later possibly more tired, afternoon compressed, no down time Alden teacher - needs to dismiss students at 1:55 - fewer minutes in school day, observed tiredness, tardiness increased.

Weekly Fatigue, hard to wake, sleeping later on weekends: Sleep vs. Tardiness Dilemma, Decreased appetite for breakfast Increase in traffic = thus more tardys Buses late, no time for locker = stress Day too long (DSU is good but would rather have child home) Child has to pick up younger sibling from DSU Lost hour of quiet homework time, Usually not tardy - has been 56 time this year Erratic bus schedule, adverse effect on routine for child that needs a set schedule Cannot see teachers for help before school - is on sailing team and cannot get help after school Sports season cut short Less time for outside play -gets dark, not getting any more sleep Less time to get ready in morning Evening activities - May run too late - late to bed Bus issue. Now Fixed Traffic Flow Extra help being provided < school. ?where is extra sleep Alden bus early, DMS bus late Bus route - no flexibility to help DSU - Cost high, Activates after school/early evening - hard to get to bed by 8 - wind down Admin & committees inflexible 3 yr vs. 7 yr - Not satisfied w/this - we need solution - concerned about grade 3-5 Moring difficulties, negotiations, sleep late, tried to drive, wait in traffic, then late Younger kids wake up - day very long for younger kids - going downhill Where's the light at the end of the tunnel two different issues - Alden Disaster as anticipated/HS gets up at same time as last year - longer day HS more stress due to afternoon compression Sleep issues, many tardies even late when on time because traffic Institute early bed time - early risers in bed at same time, better mooring waking - circadian rhythms Bus at 7, Drive them don't see older kids, have to change morning routines to get younger ones up - tough to get young in bed because of older

Getting enough sleep, too much time between A/C, Decision, bid mistake, PAC = Problem, better solution 2 working parents, tough to keep routines, High schoolers doesn't like It, input from them? Important to get their POV Breakfast DHS buses = problematic at beginning Concern = Loss of academic time P.A.C. time to Alden Kids Traffic to and around campus Families choosing to bring kids to school which is causing traffic Not Eating Breakfast Have to pay for breakfast club for Chandler student, working mother Kids over tired and school is a chore now, getting to school too early and taking minutes off end of day Extreme tired in A.M. shouldn't have to work thru this at such a young age Communication is poor between admin and parents Traffic at drop off

What Suggestions/Solution Can You Provide? Have There Been Any Surprises?
Chandler Alden
How else Can we gain Alden time? Logistics of bus, offer consulting from parents in town to help to be more efficient Make bus company more accountable and consistent, dement program, private bussing, own bussing Get good minds together, many kids getting "Hall pass" for late busses, How is 1st block different for teachers? Weekends with no activities getting up @ 9-9:30 not sleeping late, doesn't need to "Sleep Binge" ? Has time change benefitted HS - would all agree? - 1 dissent, Her High schooler is not doing well Overall - Whole thing needs to be looked at and how it impacts, e.g. welcome back days rushing/leaving early to get Alden kids off the bus 2 tired bussing 8:15 DHS & DHS 9 Alden and Chandler, the town needs sidewalks/bike paths and car pooling Put K-6 in one school

2 tiered bus system - possible good solution, relook at bus situation. Make St.. George street one way morning and afternoon Sleep for all, original recommendations 6 years ago only tweaked Additional drop-off points for drivers to Alden Look at ACTUAL ridership, analyze bus usage/routes to use buses more efficiently Alden after school extended day programs school be pro rated based on usage Reverse decision, study properly then revisit, more research, more community input, It was a 'behind the scenes Beacon Hill Bag Job, Let's do it right Extend it to fill hour Afraid sports would be impacted - no change, still goes to library Can not let 3rd grader come home = w/o Parental guidance, Have babysitters No Family structure - tag team w/mom and dad - stress Good To hear it will work in future - not working now Add more after school Activities - Alden Debate Closed Both Groups later start time - benefit all more, more buses and better sate solutions for all - stop dividing schools After school programming w/buses cuts into 15 min of program, working parents need 5 day solution Central Bus location at DMS At dismissal Bed Time same for young children, limit activities, no over scheduling As children Arrive - Strait to classes or in PAC and Journal Need more money to address transportation issues & Other school needs High Schooler loves it - Fits in everything Civil a.m. routines - very different - eat better Alden child likes it - Likes getting out earlier Polled 4 HS students- want it old way Found many students very happy - sons grades better, involved more activities How quickly the exhaustion showed up - has to wake daughter changed "Tweak" Start times Survey community - look at "Sleep for all" solution committee suggested Go back to the way it was communicate tonight's data (post to web) x x x x x x x x x x x x

Start Alden Later - 9:25 - Small Change in Other "SLEEP FOR ALL" Difference in HS students Tense Children - morning not before - PAC wait before school, Early dismissal At end of day (1:45 pack up - 1:55 Dismissal Lost instructional time at end of day, concerns about addressing this Was bus issue fully explored Alden school/MS go at same time, too many kids - empty buses 8:25 Don't loop around Alden Circle - traffic problems HS buses on time? Alden Dismissals? Too Early. Instruction time Does School have to worry about parents schedules? Don't Bus HS kids Bus HS in am, but not PM - Many Hs kids don't take afternoon bus Go back to neighborhood schools - Marshfield switched schools Norwell 9:25 too late for Alden Should explore all the issues. Chandler to start earliest (If full day K) Status quo ante More Buses: start everyone at the same time More study of Alden aged kids Education for kids re: sleep needs and lifestyle changes (cell phones etc…) Invite sleep needs experts to Duxbury to share knowledge w/kids, Families, schools Would there have been less anger if the change making process had been done differently? Moving forward what can/should be done to better communicate?....To mend fences about the process? Impact of change upon some families (Child care) Impact upon family time (Small Children) Significance of positive input on 8th grade boy Volume of families reporting negative impact That the decision was made despite opposition Negativity Significance of positive impact upon DHS senior More Money for buses Same order as before, later start time for all kids What was wrong with the old system? 25+ years Review bus routes and make sure the best routes are being used Could this go to a town meeting for vote Why no public Votes Fund Raise for Fleet of buses like Hingham. (Was this reviewed) Where are the studies on 8, 9, 10 year old sleep? Other than hormones, why are the high school kids not sleeping? Technology? Caf Drinks? What keeps kids up? End of school day release at 1:50 (2:00 on website) Why? x Waiting in PAC in A.M., wear & tear on PAC, supervision x Surprised my son is so tired, thought the time change would work, but doesn't, now driving Surprised Alden kids & high school kids together on Bus Student union works for some but don’t want young kids riding on the bus with high school bus x Surprised we didn't have this forum before the change Surprised the School committee bungled so Badly, Real P.R. Problem, Disaster Conflict of interest, was doctoral student using this as final thesis for school credit etc… Surprised so many people fired up by this How do 5 people have so much power to effect so many No hard data to support the high school was failing and needed this change
