Notre Dame Cathedral Comes to Eureka!

Organ Concerts at Christ Church presents Bay Area organist James Welch,
and pianist son Nicholas Welch in concert on Monday, September 28, 7:00
pm at Christ Episcopal Church (15th & H Streets), Eureka. The suggested
donation for the concert is $15.
Didn’t make it to Paris this past summer? James Welch, organist at Santa
Clara University and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto, played a recital
on the world famous pipe organ at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this past
June. The concert program at Christ Church will feature several of the pieces
he performed in Paris, including a piece based on the French national
anthem, a Gregorian chant-based work by a California composer, and a
thrilling toccata by Louis Vierne (organist of Notre Dame Cathedral from
1900-1937). Rounding out the program will be a selection of pieces from
America: Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho, Lord of the Dance, and Ashokan
Farewell. The latter piece, arranged by Welch, was used as the title theme of
the PBS series on the Civil War.
Joining Welch for the concert will be his son Nicholas, a senior in high school
and an accomplished pianist and organist. He will perform music by Chopin,
as well as Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.”
James Welch received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ
performance from Stanford University, with further studies in France and
Austria. He has concertized internationally, with performances in prestigious
venues such Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the National Cathedral in
Washington, D.C., and the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. A specialist
in Latin American organ music, Welch has performed in Mexico and edited
three volumes of organ music by Mexican composers. He has performed at
conventions of the American Guild of Organists and at the International
Congress of Organists and released numerous CDs, recorded on a variety of
organs. http://welchorganist.com/pages/artist.html
Nicholas Welch has performed in concert at organ and piano keyboards in
California, Hawaii, and the Tabernacle on Temple Square, Salt Lake City.
Currently a senior at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, he was the recent winner
of the San Jose AGO Chapter’s 2015 Frasier Organ Scholarship. He has held
positions as LDS ward organist and choir pianist, and substitute organist for
Christian Science and Seventh-day Adventist churches. He is also an avid

skier and swimmer and last year participated in the annual Sharkfest event,
swimming with his father from Alcatraz to San Francisco.
Please join us in welcoming musicians James and Nicholas Welch on their
return to the Northcoast. It promises to be a concert that will showcase the
possibilities of the wonderful pipe organ at Christ Church along with the
talent of a young and up-and-coming performer.
