Bnei Akiva Dinner

For eight days we sit outside,

we eat our meals under schach,
people sleep on the floor, and we
spend precious time building a
Sukkah. Upon asking what is the
purpose or meaning of Sukkot,
many simply respond that it is a
commemoration of the Jews in
the dessert, just as they has to
live in Sukkot, so do we, and this
is true. However, I think there is
a much deeper meaning to the
holiday of Sukkot.!
On Sukkot HaShem forgave
the Jewish people for the sin of
the golden calf. Afterwards, the
Ananei HaKavod, Clouds of
Glory, came back to the Jews
which was the tangible
manifestation of G-d's security
for them in the desert. They
were finally able to rest easy now
that they knew HaShem was
there protecting them. However,
now we, the Jewish people, have
been missing the Ananei
HaKavod for a lot longer than a
couple weeks, and many people
do not feel G-d's continuous

protection. Nevertheless, we go
outside of our homes, our
comfort zones, and we put
together a Sukkah. We spend
may hours decorating and
building them and they become
our homes for this short period
of time because we are trying to
send a message to HaShem and
in a way to ourselves. Of course
it is nicer and easier to stay
inside and not have to worry
about swatting away the
mosquitos, keeping the flies out
of the food, and fanning
ourselves due to the heat, but we
do it anyway. We do it to say to
HaShem, "Look, we are sitting
out here without the security
and comfort of our homes, but
we do not care." We are telling
G-d that He is our security, He is
what we need to be comfortable,
and insisting that G-d did not
forgive us for our horrendous sin
for no reason, because we love
him and need Him. !
