CAITHNESS 1. MAGNUS De OGILVIEd. 1239 Magnus son of Gilchrist, Earl of Angus (see Ogilvie) obtained the southern half of Caithness from Alexander II in 1222 upon payment of a yearly duty of £10 to the king. Magnus probably had a Norwegian mother through whom he received the earldom of Orkney, which the King of Scots could not have given him.

2I. MALCOLM (MAGNUS 1) Malcolm of Angus attested to a charter in Earl John's lifetime on 22 Apr. 1231 using his title of "Angus" only. After John's death, Malcolm attested another charter on 7 Oct. 1232 as "M. Comite de Anegus et Katania" using in addition to his own title of Angus, the title of a ward, who was heir to another earldom, in this case Caithness. On 3 July 1236, Malcolm, earl of Angus attested a third charter using his title of "Angus" only without the addition "and of Caithness". These facts can be explained by his ward having attained his majority and entered upon his earldom of Caithness between 7 Oct. 1232 and 3 July 1236. Issue I. Magnus- d.s.p.1284  3II.
