Ben Franklin had much to say about maintaining good health, observing that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Businesses today are following Franklin’s sound advice about the value of prevention by promoting wellness in the workplace. The Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) reports that more than 80% of American businesses with 50 or more employees have some form of wellness program. These businesses have recognized the importance of workplace wellness as a sound business strategy. With health care costs rising at a record pace, employee health now impacts a company’s bottom line more than ever before. Unhealthy employees use more health care dollars, are absent more often, suffer more lost work days and are generally less productive. GERMS ARE EVERYWHERE IN THE WORKPLACE – An observation study by the American Society for Microbiology found that as many as 33% of public restroom users did not wash their hands. – 54% don’t wash their hands long enough to effectively remove germs and dislodge dirt. The Centers for Disease Control and Soap & Detergent Association recommend washing with soap for at least 20 seconds.* – 43% surveyed seldom or never wash their hands after coughing or sneezing. One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or eyes after touching someone or something contaminated with the cold virus.* – 32% of people don’t always wash their hands before eating lunch. That means the things they touch, such as their phone, desktop, keyboard, mouse, door knobs, chairs, monitor/computer, copier, fax machine, etc., can harbor germs and be transferred to the food they eat ultimately making them sick.

SURFACE HYGIENE
Whether germs are viral, bacterial, or fungal, some can remain active on most surfaces for several days – no matter what the surface. When you touch that surface, it’s transmitted to your hands and if you then touch your eyes or rub your nose or lips in any way getting your fingers in contact with a mucous surface, you will have infected yourself. Remember, the average desk surface has over 400 times more germs than a toilet seat. Your hands are continually touching your desk, the phone and your keyboard throughout the day putting yourself at risk for making you sick. Why use disinfectants?
