Ben Franklin had much to say about maintaining good health, observing that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Businesses today are following Franklin’s sound advice about the value of prevention by promoting wellness in the workplace. The Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) reports that more than 80% of American businesses with 50 or more employees have some form of wellness program. These businesses have recognized the importance of workplace wellness as a sound business strategy. With health care costs rising at a record pace, employee health now impacts a company’s bottom line more than ever before. Unhealthy employees use more health care dollars, are absent more often, suffer more lost work days and are generally less productive. GERMS ARE EVERYWHERE IN THE WORKPLACE – An observation study by the American Society for Microbiology found that as many as 33% of public restroom users did not wash their hands. – 54% don’t wash their hands long enough to effectively remove germs and dislodge dirt. The Centers for Disease Control and Soap & Detergent Association recommend washing with soap for at least 20 seconds.* – 43% surveyed seldom or never wash their hands after coughing or sneezing. One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or eyes after touching someone or something contaminated with the cold virus.* – 32% of people don’t always wash their hands before eating lunch. That means the things they touch, such as their phone, desktop, keyboard, mouse, door knobs, chairs, monitor/computer, copier, fax machine, etc., can harbor germs and be transferred to the food they eat ultimately making them sick.

Whether germs are viral, bacterial, or fungal, some can remain active on most surfaces for several days – no matter what the surface. When you touch that surface, it’s transmitted to your hands and if you then touch your eyes or rub your nose or lips in any way getting your fingers in contact with a mucous surface, you will have infected yourself. Remember, the average desk surface has over 400 times more germs than a toilet seat. Your hands are continually touching your desk, the phone and your keyboard throughout the day putting yourself at risk for making you sick. Why use disinfectants? Disinfectants kill 99.9% of germs when applied wet and left on a hard, non-porous surface for at least 30 seconds. Germs such as: The Common Cold/ Rhinovirus, The Flu/Influenza Virus, E. Coli, Stomach Flu/Norovirus, Salmonella, Hepatitis A & B, Herpes Simplex Types 1 & 2, Staph & Strep, Antibiotic Resistant Germs MRSA & VRE. Hard surface disinfection is critical to breaking the chain of infection and thus creating a healthy workplace. In a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC), the regular use of surface disinfectants results in a 24% reduction in total illness and a 37% reduction in respiratory illnesses. USE DISINFECTANTS THROUGHOUT THE OFFICE: The Workplace: – Desktops – Light Switches – Handles & Door Knobs – Telephones – Garbage Bins – Copy & Fax Machines Washrooms: – Surfaces & Sink Areas – Toilets Breakrooms: – Countertops – Tables – Microwave Ovens – Faucets & Sink Areas

Say Goodbye to Germs

Most germs are spread by your hands, and your hands carry these germs throughout the workplace. With one touch, germs can be spread to your co-workers and work surfaces. As you go through your day, you’re in constant contact with these germs and deposit them on surfaces everywhere. You can wipe the germs off surfaces, but they will eventually be re-deposited. So what can you do? It’s simple, keep your hands clean. Proper hand hygiene kills the germs that are on your hands, helping to maintain your skin as a natural barrier against disease. Ethyl alcohol is the most reliable ingredient in proper hand hygiene and when applied to the skin, is among the safest known antiseptics*. The FDA has approved it as the active ingredient in antimicrobrial products. And, because alcohol evaporates completely, there is none left behind to promote “germ adaptation”. Hand sanitizers, using Ethly alcohol, need to be on your hands for 15-20 seconds to be effective. *American Journal of Infection Control STATISTICS SHOW THAT PROPER HAND HYGIENE WILL: – Reduce absenteeism in a workplace setting by 21% – Reduce absenteeism in a school setting by 50% – Reduce infection rates in a long-term care facility by 30% – Reduce infection rates in a hospital or healthcare setting by 36%

Clean air is one of our greatest natural resources. The air you breath in the workplace contributes to your personal health. According to the Clean Air Association, the cause of 50% of all respiratory illnesses have been attributed to the poor quality of indoor air. The use of hand-held and metered air sanitizers removes airborne bacteria, making the indoor air you breath healthier and cleaner. Glycol and Quaternary Ammonium Chlorides (QUATS) are proven ingredients in sanitizing and deodorizing the air. QUATS eliminate bacteria by destroying their outer membranes and literally dissolving it. They are also highly effective and quick-acting germicidal agents that are not toxic to humans or animals. QUATS AND GLYCOL – are proven to kill a wide variety of viruses, a broad spectrum of Bacteria, fungi and molds: – Staphylococcus Aureus (Staph Infection) – Streptococcus Infections – E. Coli – Salmonella – Listeria – Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 – Athlete’s Foot – Rhinovirus (Common Cold)

Implementing an effective Workplace Wellness Program means supplying your employees with the proper surface disinfectants and hand and air sanitizers. This should be done at their personal workspace and desk, in the breakroom, copy room, meeting room and restrooms. The average cost to a business is $134 per employee, per year for respiratory related illnesses. Included in these costs are; medical expenses, absenteeism, presenteeism (coming to work sick), overtime and disruption of the work flow. By implementing a Wellness Program with our help, you will improve workplace morale and your employees will be healthier and more productive. And with happy employees and less absenteeism, you’ll continue bringing in the sales and ultimately adding more “Ben Franklins” to your bottom line.
