In the milestone 2, learners will learn and appreciate the importance of Xitsonga and about the history of the Shangaan or Tsonga people. SKILLS: The Shangaan s or Tsonga culturally and traditionally have a passion for
embroidery, for colour, the decorative, the fashionable and the imaginary. The Tsonga or Shangaans are also known for the art they have in sculpturing.

KNOWLEDGE: The Tsonga people have historically had a multiplicity of
culturally different tribal groups who speak the Xitsonga language.Hence the language has a number of dialects, e.g. Xinhlanganu. Xitsonga is spoken in Southern Mozambique, the Nothern Province of the Republic of South Africa and South Eastern Zimbabwe. Xitsonga speakers are found in all nine provinces of South Africa, but the number varies in all the nine provinces. The total number of Xitsonga first home language is 1 756 105.175 245 people have indicated in the census of 1996 that they use Xitsonga as their second home language. VALUES AND ATTITUDES: Xitsonga is one of the eleven official languages in South Africa. It is mostly used as an official language in the Northern Province where the majority of Xitsonga people live. Xitsonga as introduced to writing in 1883 and the first work of creative writing was published in 1938. Since then there have been many short stories, novels, plays and poems that have been produced. The first novel was written by D.C.Marivate and was published in 1938.Other prominent writers include the poet EM Nkondo,the novelist TH Khosa who also published few plays. The attitude of the majority of the members of the community of the members is positive and eager to support the development of the language in all spheres. The language is one of the minority languages in South Africa, and is not regarded as important languages in some of the neighbouring communities.
