Preservation 301: FREE National Register Workshop
Where: Northborough Historical Society, 50 Main St. at the corner of School St. When: Friday January 22nd at 7:30PM Preservation 301 provides an overview of the National Register of Historic Places program, the country's primary means of recognizing and honoring places significant for their contributions to local, state, and national history. Learn how properties qualify for National Register listing, what it means to be listed on the National Register, the steps in the nomination process, and how to generate interest in National Register designation. Preservation Massachusetts will lead a preservation workshop for the Northborough area community. The workshop is intended to inform attendees about the importance of developing a National Register Program for your community. Local historical commission and historic district members, planners, historians, members of municipal and non profit organizations, and interested public from Northborough and surrounding communities are encouraged to attend. On Wednesday, January 27, Preservation Massachusetts will launch our new website! Through collaboration with consultant Gena Peditto, our newly designed and organized site will keep you informed on the latest preservation news, events and programs. Our resource collection, from Consultant's Directory and Tax Credit studies to a new FAQ and links section, will make finding the information you need easier. Social Wednesdays! With the Boston Preservation Alliance!
After a brief hiatus for the holidays, "Social Wednesdays!" is back! Join the Boston Preservation Alliance's staff and young professional members who are "in the know" about what is happening in Boston in an informal and relaxed setting. Meet, mingle and exchange ideas on historic preservation, real estate, architecture and urban planning in Boston. Salem Athanaeum Celebrates 200 Years in 2010!
The Salem Athenæum, a preeminent cultural institution, marks its 200th year in 2010. With its collection of historic and contemporary books and quality programming comprised of lectures, courses, and concerts, the Athenæum will celebrate its members and collections and their influence on Salem and the world. The celebration will continue yearlong with programs featuring contemporary historians, writers, musicians, poets, theatrical presentations, and critics. For those wishing to delve more deeply into the 19th century, the Athenæum will offer two multi-week courses. One course will be a study of Orientalism in British Literature (January 21 to March 4), including an optional 12-day trip to Egypt in March. The second course will offer an opportunity to learn about William Bentley's Salem (April 12 to May 10), featuring the historic writings and wisdom of Salem's own Reverend Bentley. On March 6, 2010, (exactly 200 years from the date of its incorporation) the Athenæum celebrates its anniversary in style with a Federalist period "assembly" (the name given at that time to a splendid social event
