MSU’s Bost motivated to play North Carolina
BY DAVID MILLER

STARKVILLE — Dee Bost is looking forward to Mississippi State’s game against North Carolina in the second round of the NIT. The sophomore point guard, of Concord, N.C., believes he has something to prove when Mississippi State (24-11) hosts North Carolina (1716) at Humphrey Coliseum at 11 a.m. Saturday. The 6-foot-2 Bost was the Class 3A Player of the Year in North Carolina and he wants to play well against the Tar Heels because of what he perceived to be a lack of attention from Nor th Carolina coach Roy Williams and his staf f when he was being recruited. “It’s just another game, but I would like to show them why they should have recruited me a little harder,” Bost said. North Carolina will be an esteemed guest of Mississippi State’s no matter the record or tournament. When the game tips

Division I Championship. East Mississippi (27-7) was edged 77-75 by Northwest Florida State in a consolation game to be eliminated from the tournament.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The MAC champion Ohio Bobcats, who had a losing record in conference play, have found their way in March and now boast an NCAA tournament win for the first time in 27 years. Armon Bassett scored 32 points to lead the 14thseeded Bobcats to a convincing 97-83 win over No. 3 seed Georgetown in the Midwest Regional. In early March, no one expected Ohio (22-14) to be in this position. The team had just finished a 7-9 season in Mid-American Conference play and entered the conference See MSU MEN, 3B tournament as the ninth seed. Four wins later, Ohio was in the 65-team field. Forty minutes later, the Northwest Florida State Bobcats are in the second scored the winning basket with round. Ohio seized the lead 12.6 seconds remaining on a shot early on its 3-point shootby Latraius Mosley.

off, one of college basketball’s most storied programs will take the floor at Humphrey Coliseum. Usually that storied program is Kentucky, but Nor th Carolina’s six national championships should make for added excitement, no matter how much of a down year Williams’ squad is going through. The Tar Heels, one point losers of 10 of 12 games, missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003. Williams hadn’t missed the Big Dance since 1989, his first season at Kansas. So why the big deal for a second-round NIT game? For one, the Tar Heels won the national title last season and have an alltime NCAA tournament record of 102-39. No team outside of Kentucky has Humphrey visited Coliseum with as much historical prominence as North Carolina. Mississippi Former

Bulldogs begin SEC play at Florida
BY DAVID MILLER
dmiller@cdispatch.com
STARKVILLE — As Mississippi State coach John Cohen sees it, there’s nothing that compares to league play in the Southeastern Conference. ends in the SEC and he’s hopeful last weekend’s games against UCLA, Oklahoma and Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the Whataburger Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, have given the Bulldogs ample warmup for the three-game series against the Gators.

Mississippi State went 1-4 at the Whataburger Classic, beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-2 in extra innings on the final day. Prior to the classic, the Bulldogs had won five straight games after unexpectedly dropping three straight at home to Southeast Louisiana. That kind of up-and-down non-conference per formance was to be expected with a young squad, Cohen said Thursday.

“We just need to hit that tipping point,” Cohen said. “Right now, we’re experiencing a lot of things for the first time. Our kids are doing a great job in practice, but we’re experiencing a lot of things for the first time. The game demands repetition and it’s the biggest thing we’re lacking right now.” Though the Bulldogs enter today’s 6 p.m. star t in Gainesville with an 11-6 record,

Golfers in Furman Intercollegiate
STARKVILLE –– The Mississippi State men’s golf team is coming off one of its best rounds of the season in the final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate, where it tallied a 283. MSU was five strokes better than any other team among the 14-team field. The Bulldogs look to carry that momentum into the 41st-annual Furman Intercollegiate this weekend, which will be played at the par-72 Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. Mississippi State is led by true freshman Robi Calvesbert who has been the Bulldogs top finisher in the previous four tournaments. I Copeland receives All-American honor: Senior Wendy Copeland was chosen an indoor track and field All-American by the USTFCCCA on Wednesday. The Tupelo native is only the fourth Lady Bulldog to receive this honor. Copeland earned the accolade after competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 12. She finished in 16th place after jumping 19 feet, 10 ? inches. However, she jumped 20-9 ? earlier in the season to move to second alltime in MSU history.

Ex-porn star reveals purported Tiger Woods texts
BY JOHN ROGERS
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — A former porn actress says she may reveal more potentially embarrassing information about Tiger Woods after releasing sexually graphic text messages that she claims prove her affair with the golfer. Joslyn James told The Associated Press on Thursday that she disclosed the messages because she wants people to realize that she was honest when she came forth earlier this year and said Woods had avidly pursued her. “I just wanted the public to know and the truth to be out there for me to have people see what I was being told and not

just judge me for being with a married guy,” she said. James posted more than 100 texts on her Web site Thursday, including some in which arrangements were made for her to meet with Woods at hotels where he was staying. Others stated a desire for rough sex, including messages dated Aug. 29 in which a person James says is Woods tells her he wants to slap her and that she should beg the next time he sees her. James, whose real name is Veronica Siwik-Daniels, said she met Woods when she was working at a Las Vegas nightclub he frequented. She said he led her to believe she was the only woman in his life other than his

wife. “If I would have known ever ything that was going on, and wasn’t being lied to, I would have done things dif ferently,” she said. A request for comment from a Woods spokesman was not immediately returned. She has saved more than 1,000 texts Woods sent her, James said, and plans to release more in the days ahead. She posted the first batch just two days after Woods announced he was ending his four-month, self-imposed exile to play at the Masters at Augusta National in Georgia. They could be a distraction to golf’s greatest player as he prepares for his comeback.

The final three texts James released Thursday were dated Oct. 4 and indicate the sender became enraged with her, apparently after their relationship was nearly discovered. “Don’t ... talk to me,” the final one said. “You almost just ruined my whole life. If my agent and these guys would have seen you there ... “ She said the relationship didn’t end, however, until several weeks later. James is only posting messages she says are from Woods and none from herself to the golfer. She said that’s because her cell phone quickly overwrites outgoing texts and she wasn’t able to save them.

series that dates back 100 years to the first meeting in January of 1910. This will be the first ever postseason meeting between the two teams. The teams have not met since December of 2006 when 16th-ranked Memphis prevailed 82-70 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn. The last Ole Miss win came in 2004 at the FedEx Forum when Tommie Eddie scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 65-53 victory. Ole Miss cruised past Troy behind Terrico White’s 27 points and an impressive all-around effort. The Rebels eclipsed 80 points for the 14th time this season and outrebounded the Trojans 4732. Ole Miss dished out 18 assists, while committing only seven turnovers. Meanwhile, Wesley Witherspoon made a layup as time expired to lead Memphis past St. John’s 73-71 in the opening round. In his first season as head coach, Josh Pastner has led Memphis to the NIT. Memphis finished second in Conference USA with a 13-3 league record after going a perfect 16-0 and 33-4 overall last season under departed coach John Calipari, who is now Kentucky’s

2008 when they made it to the Final Four at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Memphis has a 27-11 lead in the all-time series, while Ole Miss enjoys a 76 edge in games played in Oxford. Tonight’s game will be the 39th meeting between the regional rivals in a

coach. Duke transfer Elliot Williams leads four Tigers averaging double figures with an 18.2 scoring average to go with 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Witherspoon averages 12.5 points, Roburt Sallie averages 10.7 and Doneal Mack averages 10.4.

State great Bailey Howell, who is the the only Bulldog to have his number retired, is anxious to see the matchup because of the historical significance. “When I played, the only team in the South that was highly competitive on the national level was Kentucky,” Howell said. “You had Murray State and Memphis State back then, which we both played, but you didn’t really have teams like Kentucky, UCLA or Seattle University coming to Starkville. Besides, we only played 25 games back then. Nor th “Playing Carolina is good for basketball, period. It’s especially good for MSU to compete against a team that’s so highly regarded.” Howell’s assessment of the current college basketball landscape doesn’t differ that much from the late 1950s and early 1960s when he was an allSoutheastern Conference player before becoming an NBA All-Star: “In the world of basketball, people don’t regard the SEC as high as we think they should,” Howell said. “All those teams in the East, they think that’s basketball heaven up there and it’s always been that way.” While the stage won’t be as grand as the NCAA, MSU coach Rick Stansbur y admits the North Carolina contest is special because of the Tar Heels’ history. Add in the fact the Bulldogs will have added juice to go with the chip on their shoulder from being snubbed from the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs haven’t played a team with North Carolina’s history, outside of Kentucky, since facing Duke in the 2005 NCAA tournament. Ironically, the Bulldogs’ 63-55 loss gave Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski his 66th NCAA tournament win and put him No. 1 on the all-time list past former Nor th Carolina coach Dean Smith. “Just the tradition of North Carolina, you better respect that,” Stansbury said. “They’re not coming to Starkville very often. That doesn’t happen much. “People always ask, ‘Why don’t you ever schedule Duke or North Carolina?’ Well, not just them, UCLA or Kansas, those teams don’t come to Starkville, that’s just the way it is.” And while the Bulldogs enter the game as favorites with a No. 1 seed compared to Nor th Carolina’s No. 4, Stansbury warned of overlooking a team that’s disappointed compared to UNC teams of the past. “Here’s the first thing about UNC, you look at their record and think

they’re not very good, but it’s North Carolina and (Williams) has got the most talent of ever yone we’ll play against,” Stansbur y said. “Seven McDonald’s AllAmericans on that roster.” I NOTES: MSU senior guard Barry Stewart will start the game after x-rays on his foot came back negative. Stewar t had checked himself out of Tuesday's game against Jackson State in the first round of the NIT.

Northwest Florida State. EMCC sophomore Coco Ware, of Starkville, tied the score 75-75 on a 3pointer before Mosley made the winning shot. The game was tied 3939 at halftime and was close throughout. Northwest Florida State took the lead for the first time early in the second half at 45-44 on a basket by Brandon Crawford. The game featured two of the biggest names in the tournament so far, Ware and Northwest Florida State’s Brian Bryant. Ware led EMCC with 22 points and Mosley was the for leading scorer Northwest Florida State with 23 points. Also scoring in double figures for EMCC were Deonte Alexander with 20 points and John Harris with 13. Also in double figures for Northwest Florida State were Bryant with 16 points, Brandon Crawford with 14 and Kahlil Owens with 10. EMCC was outrebounded 45-42. The leading rebounders for the Lions were Harris and Richard Dixon with six rebounds each, while Crawford had 11 rebounds and Owens had 10 for the Raiders. The Lions had 14 assists, led by Ware and Terence Bennett with four each. EMCC made just 17-of-

A last second 3-point attempt by EMCC rimmed out as time expired to send the Lions home with a 1-2 record in their first NJCAA Division I Championship appearance. EMCC beat Brunswick (N.C.) in its tournament opener Tuesday before losing to Navarro (Texas) College on Wednesday and

45 shots for 38 percent, while Northwest Florida State made 20-of-40 shots for 50 percent. The Lions made 11-of-26 3-pointers for 42 percent and the Raiders were 7 of 18 from beyond the arc for 39 percent. EMCC was outscored 16-8 at the free throw line.

taken out of the game.” Tenth-seeded MTSU (25-5), which defeated the University of Arkansas at Little Rock 70-68 in overtime to win the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, comes into its matchup against MSU on a 16-game winning streak. The Blue Raiders have four senior starters, four players who have more than 1,000 career points, and are ranked No. 24 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll. They are No. 27 in the Associated Press poll. Clark leads the nation in scoring at 28.7 points per game. She also is fourth in the countr y in rebounding and sixth in the nation in field goal percentage (62.2 percent). Brandi Brown, a 6-foot3 for ward, Chelsia L ymon, a 5-5 senior guard, and Jackie Pickel, a 5-10 senior guard, eclipsed 1,000 career points this season, making MTSU just the sixth program in NCAA histor y to accomplish that feat. Junior Anne Marie Lanning (8.3 ppg.) is closing in that milestone as well. Of those five players, Clark has the fewest 3pointers (17). Pickel (80), Brown (71), Lanning (61), and L ymon (60) are the 3-point leaders on a team that is second in the countr y with 10 treys per game. That long-range marksmanship translates to a team that is third in the countr y in scoring (81.4 ppg.), eighth in scoring margin (17.3 ppg), eighth in field goal percentage (46.3 percent), and eighth in assists per game (17.8). “Are we great athletes? No,” Insell said. “Do we have great lateral quickness? No. Are we able to go up and dominate the boards? No. What we do we do well. We have had success doing that and we pass ball well, we share the ball, and we run the floor and knock down threes and Alysha Clark finishes inside.” Insell said his players typically have the green light to shoot 3-pointers, and there really isn’t a time when his players aren’t allowed to shoot it. “You have to guard the three ball,” Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. “They can light it up. You have to close out short and you have to close out long, and you have to have high hands and you really have to tr y to get into their space. I know when we played them it took a while for us to do what we needed to do and defend them the way we needed to defend. If people haven’t played them beforehand they are a team that can really be ver y, ver y successful.” MTSU last lost on Jan. 9 (63-43 at UALR). It has played a tough non-conference schedule that includes several common opponents with MSU, including losses to LSU (61-40 on Nov. 18), Tennessee (69-52 on Nov. 25), and Xavier (80-63 on Dec. 3). The Blue Raiders defeated Kentucky, a team that beat MSU twice, 57-51 on Dec. 28. Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell, whose team beat MSU in the SEC Tournament semifinals before losing to Tennessee, feels MSU matches up well with MTSU. “State is so athletic and they are able to bring some size to Alysha Clark with (senior center Chanel) Mokango,” Mitchell said. “She makes it difficult to score over her, and just the athleticism of their guards is so impressive. I think with senior for ward) Tysheka (Grimes) back and playing Mississippi State is an extremely dangerous team in this tournament.” Insell said his team needs to do a better job on defense. He said his team’s ef ficiency on offense often causes it not to play the same way on defense, but he has tried in the last week to change that. Playing MSU in the first round has ser ved as excellent motivation. “I think Mississippi State has the second best talent in the (Southeastern) conference,” Insell said. “I have been in the business more than 30 years and I have seen several films on them. Their point guard (senior Armelie Lumanu) is long and rangy and pushes the ball and shoots the ball well enough. (Senior guard Alexis) Rack is a great shooter who pushes ball. No. 33 (junior guard Mar y Kathr yn Govero) is just a great shooter. “What they have got is a lot of slashers. I think one of their best players is (senior for ward Tysheka) Grimes. She is rugged and big and goes to the boards well. They have a big kid inside in (senior center Chanel) Mokango, and she is a shot blocker who has lateral quickness and goes to the board well. They have good ingredients.” MSU coach Sharon

Fanning-Otis was equally expansive in her praise of the Blue Raiders. “They are one of the top teams in terms of scoring and 3-pointers and they have kids who play exceptionally hard and with a tremendous amount of experience,” Fanning-Otis said. “With that in mind we have to play our best ball. They beat Kentucky. They are a ver y, ver y, ver y good basketball team. I hope our team is ready to play for 40 minutes. That is what we have been focusing on.” Insell said the Blue Raiders will tr y to push the tempo and he imagines MSU will tr y to do the same. He knows from watching tape of MSU’s victor y against Georgia in the SEC Tournament that the Lady Bulldogs can get hot quickly and change the momentum of a game, so he said his players will have to be focused to 40 minutes.

into a missed 3-pointer, Samford went back to the free throw line following a foul and Megan Wilderotter made a pair to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 64-62 with 34 seconds to play. The Lady Rebels took an 65-64 lead with 25 seconds to go when LaKendra Phillips converted an old fashioned three-point play when she hit a layup while drawing a foul. Maxwell then hit Hill on a back door cut for the game-winning layup. Emily London led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points and hit a team-high three 3-pointers. Hill finished with 19 points and four assists, while Crow grabbed a team-high six rebounds. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs made 19-of-21 free throws and hit their final 15. Ole Miss All-America candidate Bianca Thomas finished with 22 points and hit five 3-pointers to up her season total to . She moved into fifth place all-time on the SEC’s single season list. Rober tson scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Melson had 10 points, nine assists and four steals. Ole Miss held a 37-23 edge in rebounds and held a 14-2 advantage in second chance points, but

ing an Ole Miss turnover. Melson upped Ole Miss lead to 62-60 by making 1-of-2 free throws, but the Lady Bulldogs once again responded with two free throws to even the score at 62-62 with just over a minute to play. After forcing Ole Miss

Samford forced the Lady Rebels into 17 turnovers and turned those mistakes into 18 points. The Lady Rebels led by eight points following a 3-pointer from Thomas at the 3:39 mark of the first half, but the Lady Bulldogs closed the period on a 7-0 run to trail 2726 at the break.

experience by the game, Cohen is hopeful the competitiveness will carr y them in league play, where they finished 9-20 last season. That league mark is identical to the Bulldogs’ SEC finish in 2008. Mississippi State began league competition at South Carolina last season and took two of three from the Gamecocks. The Gators (13-3), however, won two of three on the road against Miami and went to an NCAA Super Regional last season. “They’re a top SEC team — they have upperclassmen sprinkled with young guys who are talented,” Cohen said. “They don’t have a glaring weakness. They might not be as strong on the mound after losing a couple of arms, but they are still a strong team.” Florida announced today’s and Saturday’s star ters, freshman Alex Panteliodis (4-0, 1.10 ERA) and sophomore Brian Johnson (1-1, 5.52 ERA), to match up with MSU freshmen Kendall Graveman (1-0, 3.78 ERA) and Chris Stratton (2-2, 2.95 ERA). Mississippi State’s normal Friday starter, sophomore Nick Routt, has been bumped to Sunday after giving up 25 hits in five star ts this season. Last season’s bright spot in an other wise anemic starting rotation, has an ERA over seven and was viewed as this year’s standard for the team’s nine freshman or JUCO arms. “We’re just rewarding guys for pitching well,” Cohen said of the shakeup. “One area of our team we feel is much improved

Cohen believes the team’s progression is on par with where he thought it would be entering the season. He believes the team’s skill level has improved, but the team’s togetherness, especially in the middle infield where junior college transfers Nick Vickerson and Jonathan Ogden have taken their lumps, has elevated. As the Bulldogs gain

is our bullpen. We have guys we can go to this year and we’ve taken a large portion of our better arms for late in the game. The star ting guys are groomed in that way, too. “We feel like Nick pitched well yesterday (Wednesday versus Mississippi Valley State) to an extent and he’s working to get back to where he was.”

hat is your “personal best”? The answer varies according to individual backgrounds and capabilities as well as how determined you are to succeed. The Tour de France champion’s personal best as a cyclist is certainly better than that of the biking enthusiast who only gets out on weekends. But both are glorifying God by using the gifts they have been given. The most qualified and determined of us can experience tragedy and loss that jolt our capacity to perform daily tasks and reach our goals. But that effort required when we do our best can prepare us for handling adversity. God can help us in times of difficulty, too. No matter what, we need to focus on God as the inspiration for our “personal best”. When we give Him our best as we worship each week, He returns it to us with added strength and peace. Won’t you give God your all this week as you worship Him?

Conan O’Brien is in show talks with Fox
BY FRAZIER MOORE
AP Television Writer
And by mid-May, he just might be anointed by Fox as its late-night leading man, when the network’s program lineup for next season is officially unveiled. Rumors and reports that O’Brien was likely headed for Fox were almost instantly set swirling in January with his abrupt departure from NBC. Since his “Tonight Show” finale Jan. 22, O’Brien has been out of sight. But next season he could be back on the air with a new late-night show on Fox. “They are definitely talking,” said O’Brien representative Leslee Dart on Thursday, but added that Fox “is by no means the only place he’s talking right now.” The logical moment to have a deal in place would be Fox’s upfront presentation May 17. But that’s two whole months from now and, lately, things have been moving very fast for O’Brien. He exited NBC after just eight months as host of “The Tonight Show” when NBC proposed reinstating his predecessor, Jay Leno, to the 11:35 p.m. Eastern time slot, and pushing back O’Brien’s show a half-hour. Within three weeks, a theater tour for O’Brien was in the planning stages.

NEW YORK — The next few months could keep Conan O’Brien very busy. For starters, he needs to keep posting those random tweets on his recently opened Twitter account. Then in April, he hits the road for a cross-countr y comedy tour that’s scheduled to last two months.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (March 19). You stop striving and start belonging. You’ll be embraced by those you once only wished you could know better. You may currently feel that you’ve been doing a job that doesn’t suit you perfectly, but in April, you’ll get the professional validation you’ve been craving. Lifestyle improvements happen in June. Scorpio and Sagittarius people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 20, 18, 4, 37 and 50. ARIES (March 21April 19). You’ll be happier and freer if you try not to

impute a meaning and motive into the behaviors of others. Observe the way they are from a detached place, without feeling that you must figure them out. TAURUS (April 20May 20). Facing a challenge head-on is sometimes easier than avoiding it. That is the case here. You need to turn around and look this thing in the eye so you can see that it’s not nearly as big a monster as you’re making it out to be. GEMINI (May 21June 21). You will find that people who are overly tense repel you. They may even scare you a bit. It’s a good lesson. Relaxed people are attractive people. The things you do to put yourself in a relaxed state will be worthwhile. CANCER (June 22July 22). You’re on a roll. If your friends could see you now! Well, actually, they can and do keep pretty constant tabs on you, especially when you’re doing as well as you’ve been doing lately. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll be in a situation that calls for some star quality. You’ve trained yourself to change moods in a snap. All you have to do is hit the switch and your bright, energetic attitude turns on. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Since you know in the first two seconds whether or not you like a person,

FAMILY CIRCUS

you’ll have no problem navigating the fresh faces that enter your world today. Believe in your first impressions, and stick by them. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You have no idea why it is that people seem to be staring at you longer than they look at most people. There is something ineffable you give off that is making an impression. SCORPIO (Oct. 24Nov. 21). An acquaintance who once seemed to look right past you will now be amazingly friendly. What changed? Not that much. It’s just that some people take longer to warm up. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Express your creativity. Even the sharpest critic will accept you. In light of the fact that you can do no wrong, you may as well do what genuinely pleases you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Know when to quit. Yes, it’s good to push yourself to see how much you can stand, but at some point, walking away is the next step forward. That might be the case now. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 18). People who know you will cherish you. Then there’s the clueless one who just doesn’t seem to catch on. This same person has on occasion forgotten your name. It probably wasn’t personal, but if it was, so what? PISCES (Feb. 19March 20). The preparation for the day’s events takes longer than the events themselves, but it’s worth it. If you feel good about the way you’re dressed and how you look, you’ll get a fantastic head start.
