The Burgenland Iron Curtain Trail

Discovering a piece of history

For almost half a century, the Iron Curtain separated the continent - from Barents Sea to Black
Sea. Today, you can discover this past division
of Europe with your bicycle along the 14 longdistance routes of the EuroVelo 13 (a total of
10,400 km).
A 290 km-long section of this Iron Curtain Trail
leads along the border between Burgenland and
Hungary, where the Iron Curtain used to stand from
1948 to 1989. Many tragedies took place here,
with people trying to flee the Eastern Block losing
their lives. And tears of joy were shed, too. Such
as during the Pan-European picnic on 19 August
1989, when 600 GDR citizens fled to the West.
As Austrian Foreign Minister Alois Mock and his
Hungarian counterpart Gyula Horn cut the barbed
wire fence together with the Governor of Burgen-

land, Hans Siptz, on 27 June 1989 at Klingenbach,

the Iron Curtain became a part of history.
A history that you will discover in the company of
this roadbook. The Burgenland Iron Curtain Trail
is one of six top Pannonical bicycle routes. In the
roadbook Cycling along Lake Neusiedl, you
can find the famous Lake Neusiedl Cycle Path
(Neusiedler See-Radweg), the Puddle Cycle Path
(Lackenradweg), the Cherry Blossom Cycle Path
(Kirschbltenradweg) and the new Festival Cycle
Path (Festival-Radweg). The Paradise Route in
Southern Burgenland is enchanting with its
incredible diversity. In total, 2,500 kilometres of
splendidly structured and well-marked cycle
paths await you in the land of the sun.
The choice is yours. Burgenland biking
pleasure for all expectations

Please plan your tour along the Iron Curtain Trail in good time.

1st stage : Kittsee-Halbturn (approx. 40 km)

Start your Iron Curtain tour in Kittsee, Austrias
largest apricot community and centre of the culinary
Kittsee apricot region. Around 30,000 apricot trees
produce 700,000 kg of fruit a year that you can also
buy at stands along the road. Concerts take place
in the summer in the old Castle Kittsee on an open
air stage, while the Ethnographic Museum can now
be found in the new castle. The old estate on the
main square and the holy trinity column, the Heideturm, the Blue Cross and the Jewish cemetery behind
the old castle are some of this nice towns attractions.
After passing through the town Pama, you will
come to Deutsch Jahrndorf, Austrias most
eastern community. There, it is worth stopping by
the border triangle between Austria, Hungary and
Slovakia, where a sculpture park commemorates
the fall of the Iron Curtain.

On your way to Nickelsdorf, you will see many

old independent farmyards. Every year since 2005,
Nickelsdorf has hosted the largest open air event
in Austria: the three-day Nova Rock Festival.
Close to the town, a monument reminds visitors
that the foreign ministers of Austria and Hungary,
Alois Mock and Gyula Horn, symbolically breached
the Iron Curtain there on 27 June 1989.
While Nickelsdorf is seen as the stronghold of hard
beats, the classical concerts and exhibitions in
the baroque Castle Halbturn (Lucas von Hildebrandt!) are much more harmonious. Wooden
maize granaries known as Tschardaken are
typical of the town of Halbturn and stand in the
spotlight at the Tschardaken festival in the late
summer.

2nd stage: Halbturn Pamhagen (approx. 40km)

Before cycling away, you could also consider
making a short detour to the neighbouring town
of Mnchhof. In the well-known town museum
there, you will not only find Heideboden buildings
from 1900, but also toll sentry boxes and a frontier barrier, as well as one of the Trabis that were
used to flee to the West at the time.

Andau, the next fixed point on your tour, became

famous because of an inconspicuous wooden
bridge across the Einserkanal that gave the last
opportunity to 70,000 Hungarians to flee to the
West during the Hungarian uprising of 1956. Today,
a sculpture boulevard along the so-called road
to freedom commemorates the events of those
days. The surrounding Pannonian steppe landscape is exceptionally beautiful. You can even
observe great bustards, the heaviest flying bird,
from the top of viewing towers.
Wallern, located at 120 m above sea level, is the
lowest lying Austrian town and is regarded as the
vegetable garden. From here, you can cross the
border into Hungary through vine trellises and the
town of Pamhagen, with its historical Trkenturm
(Turkish Tower) bell tower and the prehistoric
burial mound of the Pamhagenese Castle.

3rd stage: Pamhagen Mrbisch (approx. 50 km)

After passing through the settlements of Fertjlak
and Sarrd, you will arrive in Fertd. Fert means
swamp - and you now find yourself in the centre of
the Fert-Hansg National Park. Fertd became
famous for its splendid Esterhzy Castle. This Hungarian Versailles situated in the centre of an enchanting park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and
is also interesting for music lovers, because Joseph
Haydn spent many years there as a court composer.
In Fertszplak, a row of white Hungarian folk
baroque arcade houses awaits you, some of which
have been turned into ethnological outdoor museums.
The neighbouring town of Hegyk has made a name
for itself thanks to its thermal bath.
Hidegsg welcomes you with a church from the
13th century that is really worth seeing, as well as
a refreshing spring. Your route now leads through a
wine-growing region past the village of Fertboz,
where you will be able to look down from a former
watchtower on a mountaintop over the countryside
and Lake Neusiedl. Fertboz is also the end station
of a museum train.

In Balf, which is today a district of Sopron, there

used to be a camp during World War II where forced
labourers and about 30,000 Hungarian Jews from
Budapest were held prisoner and used to build the
so-called South-Eastern wall against the Soviet
troops. Only a few prisoners survived the atrocities
of the Nazis.
Fertrkos (Kroisbach) will remind you vividly of
recent history - with the Monument to the Opening
of the Border in the 1989 Park, where you will also
find the baroque water mill of the episcopal estate.
If you look around the town, you will encounter
amongst others, an old pillory and a baroque church
with a fortified tower. The towns Festival Quarry also
contains an epigraph for Hungarian Jews and political prisoners who were murdered there by the
Nazis.
A few kilometres beyond Fertrkos, you will come
to the national border and Mithraeum, a Roman
temple. You will then reach Mrbisch am See - one
of Austrias top locations for operetta enthusiasts.

Traditional Streckhof farm buildings with

columned-front porches await you in the Hofgasse
farmyard streets of this picturesque wine village, as
well as the lovely historic house, Heimathaus.

this opportunity to flee to the West. Many monuments
are dedicated to recent history - such as the Pan-European statue of Gabriela von Habsburg, the Monument of Open Doors, the Upheaval monument
as well as the Japanese pagoda which symbolises
happiness over the reunification of Europe.

Soon after Mrbisch, you will once again reach the

Hungarian border and after a short distance, you
will see the Freedom Square. There, a memorial commemorates, among other events, the Pan-European picnic that took place there on 19 August
1989. During that peace demonstration, the border
was opened symbolically for three hours at the old
Pressburg road. Hundreds of GDR citizens took

You will follow the national border for a while, before passing through the old border town of Klingenbach and reaching Schattendorf. The town
became the focus of attention in 1927, when a child
and a man were shot by nationalist combatants
during a social-democratic rally. Just after the
border, you will reach gfalva (Agendorf), which
was once important because of its nearby brown
coal mine, Brennberg. You can learn more about
that in the mine museum of Brennberg.
The landmark of Sopron, a bilingual town of 55,000
inhabitants, is the fire watch tower, which houses
the city museum. The historic centre is captivating,
with its atmospheric streets that are often used as
a film set. Today, the city is often visited by Eastern
Austrians for shopping.

Along the foothills of the Rohrbach Forest, the

route leads you through Harka and over the border
to Neckenmarkt. This award-winning Austrian red
wine community (Blaufrnkisch) is famous for the
old tradition of flag spinning that goes back to the
battle of Lackenbach in 1620. Learn more about it
at the Viticulture & Flag Spinning Museum.

5th stage: Neckenmarkt - Lutzmannsburg (approx. 30 km)

The next town on your tour, Raiding, is entirely
dedicated to the memory of composer and piano
virtuoso Franz Liszt (1811-1886). His birthplace
was turned into a museum and is located next to
a modern concert hall for almost 600 visitors. In
2012, Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori built
Storchenhaus (Stork house), a guest house for
cultural exchanges, followed by a modern resting
place for cyclists called Drei Wanderer (Three
Wanderers) in 2014.
After passing through Kleinwarasdorf with its
church dating back to 1505 and Kroatisch Minihof,
you will reach the Burgenland-Croatian community of Nikitsch with its beautiful castle in a large
English park (private property). In Lutzmannsburg,
you will have reached one of the countrys most
significant tourism communities. Here, the familyfriendly spa Sonnentherme will make visitors want
to take a relaxing break. Epicures know Lutzmannsburg as the portal to the land of Blaufrnkisch wine.
Just outside the market community, a monument
commemorates the Iron Curtain.

6th stage: Lutzmannsburg Bozsok Rechnitz (appr. 30 km)

In Strebersdorf, you will be cycling along the
Bernsteinstrae (Amber Street), the most important
Roman trade route, which was built during the 1st
century. This will take you to Frankenau-Unterpullendorf, a settlement that used to be the largest
Roman settlement in Burgenland. You will find
antique relics at nearby town Gromutschen and
funnel-shaped sink holes, pits made from the
former mines caved-in shafts, in Unterpullendorf.
And the Mittelpunktstein, the stone that marks
the centre of Burgenland, is also located nearby.
Klostenmarienberg, built in 1197 as a daughter
monastery of Heiligenkreuz Abbey, is known for its
Chestnut Festival in the autumn.
Just after the border, you will reach lmod, a small,
peaceful town, where archaeologists have excavated two ironworks. An idyllic forest accompanies
you to pretty Kszeg. This architectural gem of
Hungary is a prime example of a successful city
restoration - as medieval buildings in the historic
centre and Castle Jurisics can attest. Its lord once
managed to get a superior Ottoman army on the

run, which is why all the church bells in the town

still ring every day at 11am, even today.
After crossing fields and meadows, you will reach
Kszegszerdahely and then Bozsok, an important
settlement during Roman times. Today, the late
Renaissance Castle Sibrik is one of the most
charming attractions of the town. A few kilometres
further, you will reach the small wine village of
Rechnitz, located in the centre of the cross-border
natural park of Geschriebenstein-rottk.

After passing through the old towns of Bucsu
(first mentioned in 1236) and Narda with is town
church dating back to the 13th century, you will
reach Felscsatr, where the Iron Curtain Museum (Vasfggny Mzeum) awaits visitors with
many interesting exhibits. After cycling along fields
and a stretch parallel to the river Pinka, you will
pass through Vaskeresztes to reach Horvtlv,
a town often populated by Croats, where a monument commemorates the victims of the World
Wars as well as those of the uprising in 1956.
After Pornapti, you will reach Bildein, where
the Burgenland historic house tells the tale of the
development of the youngest federal state of
Austria, from its birth in 1921 to current events.
The wine culture house in the centre of the village
is a meeting place for culture and gastronomy.
And the border experience trail evokes special
feelings, with its stations - such as a labyrinth, a
trench with a bunker, a reconstruction of the Iron
Curtain and, a floating bridge - intended to make

visitors reflect and debate. Another thought-provoking detail is a board with information about
the infamous south-eastern wall located near the
town.

By passing through Strem, where you can admire

the distant countryside from a platform, you will
reach Heiligenbrunn with its romantic wine cellars.
One hundred and twenty historic cellars from the
17th and 18th centuries, partly covered with straw,
invite visitors to get acquainted with the Uhudler
wine. The original wine from unmodified grapes
(direct producers) is held in high esteem by many
people because of its fine wild berry notes. After
passing through Reinersdorf and Gromrbisch,
you will reach Inzenhof, where there used to be a
land-mine field at the time of the Iron Curtain, next
to St. Emmerich church. The golden tower cross
of the church that was destroyed during World War
II was blessed by Pope John Paul II. This is where
your tour along the former dividing line of a now
reunited continent comes to a very contemplative
end...

Bicycle fun in the land of the sun, Central Burgenland

Discover Central Burgenland, one of the best
wine-growing regions of Austria, on two wheels.
And experience idyllic landscapes, picturesque
towns and culture along the wayside...
So many highlights: The Liszt Cycling Path (Lisztradwanderweg, B 46) starts in Raiding, where you
will, among other things, encounter the virtuoso
composer in the birthplace of Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
and the Liszt Centre. A beautiful arcade courtyard
and the adventure museum "Der Natur auf der Spur
(Tracking down nature) await you in the Esterhzy
Castle of Lackenbach. Lake Sonnensee in Ritzing and
the wine and flag spinning museum in Neckenmarkt
will tempt you to take a well-deserved break. And
finally, the wine house in Horitschon will introduce you
to the Blaufrnkisch wine ..
The 38 km-long Red Wine Cycle Path (Rotweinradweg, B 40) is another circuit that leads through the
diverse and undulating landscape of the land of
Blaufrnkisch wine. You will cross the wine region
around Neckenmarkt and cycle along the southern
slope of denburg mountain and through the Biri

wine-growing area. You will get to know many towns

such as Deutschkreutz, Horitschon and Raiding. You
can visit Castle Deutschkreutz, Liszts baptistery in
Unterfrauenhaid and at the end of your tour, the
swimming pool or vinatrium in Deutschkreutz.
The Sonnenland Draisinentour offers an unusual
and very relaxing way to cycle, during which you will
be able to experience Central Burgenland with a
bicycle draisine. You will be cycling on an old 23 kmlong railway line which leads from Deutschkreutz to
Oberpullendorf..
Travelling is also fun with a SEGWAY. Guided SEGWAY
tours allow you to explore Central Burgenland on a
trendy electric scooter. A SEGWAY course has also
been set up specifically for groups.

Cycling in Rosalia - mountain and castle

Experience this variety up close along the Rosalia Cycling Track (Rosalia Radwanderweg, B 32),
which links Wiener Neustadt to the Kogl Cycle
Path. The asphalt cycle path may have a few
steep ascents, but this 21 km-long track features
many attractions, such as Castle Forchtenstein
and the bathing lake of Neudrfl.
In Walbersdorf, the Rosalia Cycling Track reaches
the Kogl Cycle Path (Koglweg, B 30). This familyfriendly, 34 km-long cycling circuit leads you
to, amongst other attractions, the landscape
protection area of Rohrbacher Teichwiesen with
its botanic rarities such as the fringed gentian and
pasque flower. The other cycle paths in Rosalia

also have lots to offer individuals and families

alike. Connecting paths allow for detours to
the Leitha Cycle Path (Leitharadweg, B 11) and
Lake Neusiedl Cycle Path (Neusiedler SeeRadweg, B 10). And if you take the Hexenhgel Connecting Cycle Path (Hexenhgel-Verbindungsradweg, B 33), the mysterious witch
hill will make you wonder.
Rosalia is an El Dorado for mountainbikers. This
unique mountain bike arena is almost 100 kilometres long. You can choose from five tracks.
They all bear region-specific names, but some of
them have reached nationwide fame and are interconnected by the Buma Bia Track.
