ofthecompanysiPhonesandiPadswithoutpermission.
Theamountwaslessthanthe$400milliontheWisconsinAlumniResearchFoundation(WARF)was
claimingindamagesafterthejuryonTuesdaysaidAppleinfringeditspatentforimprovingthe
performanceofcomputerprocessors.
Applesaiditwouldappealtheverdict,butdeclinedtocommentfurther.WARFpraisedtheverdictand
saiditwasimportanttoprotecttheuniversitysinventionsfromunauthoriseduse.Thisdecisionis
greatnews,saidWARFManagingDirectorCarlGulbrandseninastatement.
Jurorsdeliberatedforabout31/2hoursbeforereturningtheverdictinthecloselywatchedcasein
federalcourtinMadison,Wisconsin.Itwasthesecondphaseofatrialthatbeganon5October.
ThejurywasconsideringwhetherApplesA7,A8andA8Xprocessors,foundintheiPhone5s,6and6
Plus,aswellasseveralversionsoftheiPad,violatedthepatent.
WARFsuedAppleinJanuary2014alleginginfringementofits1998patentonapredictorcircuit,
developedbycomputerscienceprofessorGurindarSohiandthreeofhisstudents.
MuchofthedisputeoverdamageshadtodowithwhetheracertainportionofAppleschipsthatwere
placedindevicessoldabroad,ratherthanintheUnitedStates,alsoviolatedtheWARFpatent.The
jurorsfoundthattheydid.
Applehadsoughttogreatlylimititsliability,arguingbeforejurorsthatWARFdeservedlessthaneven
the$110millionthefoundationsettledwithIntelCorpaftersuingthatcompanyin2008overthesame
patent.
ApplehadarguedthatWARFspatententitledittoaslittleas7centsperdevicesold,afarcryfromthe
$2.74thatWARFwasclaiming.
WARFusessomeoftheincomeitgeneratestosupportresearchattheschool,dolingoutmorethan$
58millioningrantslastyear,accordingtoitswebsite.
OnThursday,USDistrictJudgeWilliamConley,whoispresidingoverthecase,ruledthatApplehad
notwilfullyinfringedWARFspatent,eliminatingachancetotriplethedamagesinthecase.
Lastmonth,WARFlaunchedasecondlawsuitagainstApple,targetingthecompanysnewestchips
anddevices,theiPhone6Sand6SPlus,andiPadPro.
