Numerical Investigation of Fluid-Structure Interaction in Tidal Turbine

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bettar Ould el Moctar
Module and simulate an axial tidal turbine of SCHOTTEL company, http://www.
schottel.de/home/, and compare results with the experimental work using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). OpenFoam codes has been used for simulation. The modeling
of the tidal turbine will help us to understand and analyze many factors in the tidal turbine
operation. The next step to compare the results between the modeling with and without the
structure deformation effect of the turbine, such as power and thrust coefficients.

Work summary

Numerical Simulation of Flow Through Radial Impellers and The Slip Factor
Prof. Galal Khalafala, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim
The thesis was investigated a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis
of the flow through a centrifugal pump. ANSYS/CFX was used for CFD simulation. Numerical
results was in a good agreement with the pump performance curve particularly around the
design point. Slip factor was calculated from the numerical results and it was compared with
known mathematical models. The effect of adding splitters and increasing number of blades
on slip factor was studied. It was found that by increasing the number of blades or splitter
length, the slip factor improved. In addition to, the effect of adding splitters and increasing
the number of blades also studied on the produced head and the pump hydraulic efficiency.
However, the resulting hydraulic efficiency did not show a corresponding improvement due
to the incurred hydraulic losses. Another master student study now more factors and will
complete that work.
