Child, Youth and Family Programs
The YMCA is committed to helping children and youth reach their full
potential—in mind, body and spirit. That’s why we provide programs in a caring
and supportive place where you and your family can be healthy, meet great
friends and be happy. By participating in programs at the Y, your family can grow
up strong, get active and enjoy life together.
Memberships include free drop-in programs and activities for both kids and
adults at the best times of day. Check out our ‘at a glance’ schedules for all
drop-in programs and activities, available for pick up at the branch or on our
website.

Preschool
All Preschool programs are offered at these standard rates:
Members $36.00 / Non-Members $46.00
Toddler Time (2 ½-3 ½ years)
Children will learn how to socialize with other kids, begin to recognize
basic colours, shapes, letters and numbers, and will develop
independence by staying in a group setting without Mom or Dad.
Each class is a mixture of art, science and play.

Crazy Critters (2 ½-3 ½ years)
Teachers provide a chance for children to learn about our world and the
world of science through simple experiments. We also get “up close and
personal” with a variety of bugs and insects so that your child begins to
understand and appreciate nature.

Preschool Picassos (2 ½-3 ½ years)
Do you have a budding artist in your home? Let our teachers help your
child discover the artist inside him/her in this fun art class! We will explore

Do you remember losing yourself in a good book? This class encourages

Winter Break Camp (6-12 years)
Reminiscing about summer camps? Join us for day camp over the

Preschool gym and swim is a great way to keep your children healthy and
active while having fun. The first half is spent in the gym, playing sports
and games and the second half is spent learning games in the water!

Babysitter Training (11+ years)
Train to become a babysitter—learn how to care for children and babies,
behaviour management skills, home and outdoor safety. Our course is

Birthday Parties at the Y
Birthdays are special. That’s why we take care of all the details so you
can take a break from the details and join the party too. We provide
balloons, napkins, table cloths, plates, cutlery and two enthusiastic
party staff to lead the group in games and activities. All you need to
bring are the guests, snack and cake.

Youth
Youth Night (11-15 years)
Come down to the Y for an evening of Air Hockey, Ping Pong, Nintendo
Wii and X-Box Kinect with your friends. Every Friday showcases a different

YMCA Youth Leadership Development
You’ve got influence—why not use it for good? YLD helps you get to
know yourself better, become a skilled leader and interact with a variety
of people. Plus, you’ll make friends for life and have fun. Activities include
team building, social events, volunteer opportunities, fundraising, training,
special events and a Youth Conference weekend. Try it free for one month!
Youth Leaders can also join the Interact or Rotaract clubs, sponsored by
Rotary which meets Thursday evenings to plan and run community service
projects.

Lifesaving Courses
Bronze Star
Bronze Star is a pre-Bronze Medallion program that helps prepare candidates for
success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decisionmaking skills as individuals and in partners. Candidates learn basic lifesaving and
resuscitation skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Includes 400 metre
timed swim.
Pre-requisites: Swimming ability of YMCA Star 4 or Red Cross Swim Kids 8
Recommended minimum age: 12 years

Bronze Medallion
Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied
in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill
and fitness. Rescuers learn advanced lifesaving techniques for challenging rescues
of increased risk, involving conscious and unconscious victims in varying water
depths. Participants develop stroke efficiency and endurance in timed swims (500
metres). Includes CPR-A.
Pre-requisites: Bronze Star or 13 years by the last day of course

Bronze Cross
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced
training, including an introduction to safety supervision. Bronze Cross is a
prerequisite for all advanced training programs, including National Lifeguard®
(NL) and Instructor certifications. Includes a 600 metre timed swim and CPR-C.
Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing
aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic
emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze
Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits.

Barracudas Swim Club

Non-competitive swim club run by professional and certified coaches. Each practice
includes one hour of intense swimming, drills and stroke correction plus dry-land
warmup. Three practices per week. Register based on skill level.
Junior – Must be able to swim 50m of front and back crawl. Swim lesson equivalent
is Swimmer/Star 1.

Development – Must be able to swim 100m continuously with proficiency in front

Courses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
provide the skills needed to recognize and respond
to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults,
children, and babies.
