Thinking Hats Newsletter
On the 4th of February, the school held a very successful Thinking Hats Information Evening for parents. The parents left with a clearer understanding of Thinking Hats but still had a few queries about some of the hats. In this newsletter we will give some more examples of Thinking Hats and how they are used. Thinking Hats can be so enjoyable to work with! By Anna Michels and Erin McFarlane. The Six Thinking Hats—First of all, Kristen, Morgan and Kaitlyn have worked on a summary of the Thinking Hats to remind and inform parents about what the different types of thinking are. Yellow—Yellow Hat means think of the positives of things. Black— Black Hat means the negatives of things. White– We think about facts with the White Hat. Red—We think about feelings with the Red Hat. Green— Green Hat is for creativity. Blue—Blue hat is used to think about next steps in learning and to organise thinking. By Kristen Downie, Kaitlyn McPherson and Morgan Watts.
Blue Hat Thinking. During the Thinking Hat evening the children presented the parents with many of their own tasks under different Thinking Hats. However, some parents still wondered about how Blue Hat thinking could be used. In class children have used Blue Hat to help with next steps in their own or other children’s work to help them improve. It is also very useful for evaluation of learning for example at the end of a topic. Some P3 children wrote “We used the Blue Hat at the end of our Plants Topic to write what we would like to learn in the future about plants and about what else we could learn for ourselves” (Gerard Murphy, Rachel Clark, Rebecca Jamieson). Here is a Blue hat problem to work on yourself! Put on your Blue Hat and choose which of the other hats you would want to use first in the following situations. A man collapses in front of you in the street. _________ Hat. Your friend is accused of cheating on a test, but you know they didn’t. _________ Hat. There is a bad smell in the room. ________ Hat.
Parents learned about the Green Hat and got creative at this station. Everyone enjoyed getting involved in the tasks which helped them learn more about how Thinking Hats are used.
Parents moved around 4 different stations. At each station the children had prepared interesting tasks for the parents to complete. Parents felt more informed about thinking hats as they used different Hats.
Megan explains the meaning of the Thinking Hats to parents in preparation for the quiz! During the quiz parents had to decide what Thinking Hat was being used in various statements. It was quite a challenge!
Our Experiences on the Night. The Thinking Hats Information Evening was a great success due to the participation of the children and adults who came along. The children who worked on the stations were creative in their ideas to make the night enjoyable for the parents and they were very confident in their delivery of their challenges. We gave the parents challenging examples of how to use Yellow and Black Hat thinking. It was really fun to see what they come up with and we all really enjoyed ourselves.”
“At the Green Hat station we thought it was quite challenging when the parents created their own hats. The parents answered a lot of questions about Thinking Hats” By Megan Hill. “Everybody likes Thinking Hats because it is more challenging.
