Whau Local Board
I can only report back on the September WLB meeting,
as I wasn’t well enough to go to the October one.
Apart from the issue of the naming of the reserve in
Tiverton Road (see November-December issue of the
Avondale Historical Journal) …
Marjorie Sheat of the Avondale Union Parish was presented with a well-deserved community award from the
Board for all her decades of service as an organist to
the parish, along with the work she has done over the
years in giving piano lessons. It was wonderful witnessing her accepting the plaque.
The Board also decided on the leaseholder for the
former toilet/Plunket/Traffic Dept offices at 50A
Rosebank Road. This will be the Pacific Events Entertainment Trust. I must say, when I approached the previous Board regarding the possibility of saving the
building to some extent, rather than see it sold and
bowled for another carpark space, I wasn’t sure it
would work out. Acknowledgement must be made to
Derek Battersby, the chairman of the Board at that
time, for supporting the concept and seeing it through,
and to Board Member Duncan Macdonald who also
supported it from day one.

NZ History Federation conference &
AGM 2016 at Auckland
As a bit of a change from me trotting off to other parts
of the country — the 2016 conference is being held in
Auckland over the course of 29 April to 1 May. At the
moment, I’m putting together the event, in conjunction
with Garth Houltham of the Mt Roskill (Puketapapa)
Historical Society) starting with a Friday evening gettogether at Kinder House in Parnell, Saturday conference and AGM at Alberton in Mt Albert, Saturday
night dinner and a movie at Ryder’s Cinema here in
Avondale, and a Sunday morning visit to the Portage
Ceramics Museum in New Lynn.
Any help with sorting things out, especially on
Saturday April 30 would be very greatly appreciated.

Children’s book on story of
Oakley Creek
I heard from the Chairman of the Albert-Eden Local
Board, Peter Haines (via Facebook) that his Board are
backing a project to have a history of Oakley Creek
written for children. I think this is a marvellous project.
Peter has said he’ll let me know how it proceeds.

Next meeting of the
