Frederick Scrappy Carao operated Freds Diner for many

years in Whitehall, New York. It was a family operation, and
his daughter, Cynthia, was among the workers. Scrappy was
aptly named, as he was a feisty one.
Cynthia remained in the restaurant business after Freds closed.
She managed for others, then went out on her own in Argyle,
and Ft Edward. When Henrys Log Cabin Diner closed, Cynthia
jumped at the chance to take over what had been an excellent
restaurant location over the years. She renamed it Scrappys
in honor of her father, and carries on her fathers tradition of
providing generous portions of really good food.
Cynthia offers Breakfast from 6am til 2pm and Lunch begins
at 11am. For breakfast you can get cereals, omelets, griddle cakes,
breakfast sandwiches, and many choices of meats and beverages.
For lunch she offers burgers, hot dogs, cold sandwiches, grilled
sandwiches, club sandwiches, soups, appetizers (like wings)
salads, chicken tenders, chicken & biscuits, deluxe entrees and
other delightful fare. For dessert you can try one of her scrumptious pies, bread pudding, chocolate pudding, cheesecake, or
strawberry shortcake. (She makes her own biscuits!)
She offers the absolute best oatmeal breakfast in the area, which
you can get all day.
Give Scrappys a try. She is there 6am til 2pm. Call ahead and
your meal can be ready for you. 518-741-0344.

Its easy to talk about the ideals of our country, but then its clearly a different matter to hold

examples of commitment to the values our country stands for. Take a few moments and think

be better Patriots, whether in or out of uniform, and stand up for and demand that our rights,
values and freedoms be maintained, those actions in themselves would be a great tribute to all
Veterans who have served and are presently on duty around the world. When ever I see a

VETERANS DAY OBSERVANCE:

November 6, 2015

Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church
services and in many places the American flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. Some schools are closed on Veterans Day,
while others do not close, but choose to mark the occasion with special assemblies or other activities.
Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11. However, if it falls on a Sunday, it is officially celebrated on the Monday following. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the
11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In
1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the countrys service and with gratitude for the victory".
There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am.
In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and
thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all
Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate
ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples."
An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was
originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service men in the history of the United States and
the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans". Congress approved this
change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, whereever and whenever they had served.

ON THE FARM

by Andy Manne

OPTIMIZE YOUR FARM DEBT. Consider financing options to improve balance sheets
Todays financial times put even seasoned producers to the test. They illustrate the importance
of planning for both ends of an ag cycle. When
prices are higher, use that time to build your This weeks ag report is
working capital. Certainly use some of your
funds toward planned equipment purchases, sponsored by:
but, realize the importance of reserving cash
funds for the future. Understand the impor1135 STATE RT. 29
tance of evaluating financing options and facGREENWICH, NEW YORK, 12834
toring in future interest rates. Carefully consider whether those rates are applied using a
(518) 692-9611 FAX - (518) 692-2210
simple or compounded formula as well as payment terms and loan covenants when making
a purchase, regardless of the size of the item.
If youre going to spend money, make sure its in a way it will make money. Set Borrowing
Boundaries. A good place to start is with your machinery fleet. For owned equipment, consider
refinancing options. Machinery debt is a great option to reimburse working capital by putting
a new loan in place, especially if youve used cash in recent years to do capital expenditures,
says Adam Stonecipher, vice president and ag banking officer at First Midwest Bank in Danville,
Ill. Be sure to only refinance loans on assets you intend to keep for the life of the loan.
Many vendors are now offering financing for inputs. The biggest factor to look at is when
money is due, Stonecipher says. In some cases, you book
inputs in the spring and dont have to pay until after harvest. If
your marketing plan calls for storing crops until next spring,
make sure you have an operating note in place to pay that bill
or you may incur major fees.
Difficult Decisions. By continually assessing finances and
goals, you can make good decisions. For example, stop farming acreage of cash rent ground if it will create a loss.
Continue to look for ways to trim expenses. Be prepared to
evaluate expenditures and processes, even ones that may seem
normal and customary. Dont let the drain of day-to-day operations over power planning.
