Growing Deeply

a daily scripture guide

Week of November 9 November 14

MONDAY: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 Eat your fruit

REFLECTION: Do you have a fruit that you dont like to eat? I dont care
for raspberries, for example. When you look at the spiritual fruits in this
reading, to which one(s) do you say, Eh, Id rather not? Why do you
think you feel that way?
PRAYER: Make me spiritually healthy as I choose to eat (live out) the
spiritual fruit.
TUESDAY: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 Spirit led
REFLECTION: Review UMH No. 382 Have Thine Own Way, Lord
PRAYER: Fill with thy spirit till all shall see Christ only, always, living in
me! (v. 4)
WEDNESDAY: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 Freedom and fruit
REFLECTION: Living free of the flesh allows us to make room for Gods
spirit to live, move and grow in us. Let some stuff go! In our culture, it
is hard to give in and flow in the Spirit because we value controlling our
present and future so much.
PRAYER: I cant do it all, Lord. I loosen the reins on my life so that you
can flow in and through me.
THURSDAY: Deuteronomy 6:1-9 The great commandment
REFLECTION: Remember the great commandment that Jesus speaks of in
Matthew was already a tenet of Jewish faith from the Old Testament.
ACTION: Write out verse 5 today on your body, on a sheet of paper, in
a book, on your smartphone, etc.

Sunday Sermon
Live Free or Die - November 8
Scripture: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 (MSG)

My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by Gods Spirit. Then
you wont feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful
self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is
incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so
that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according
to how you feel on any given day. Why dont you choose to be led by the
Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?
It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all
the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental
and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket
gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; allconsuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or
be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits;
the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and
uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. This
isnt the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this
way, you will not inherit Gods kingdom. But what happens when we live Gods
way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an
orchardthings like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We
develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart,
and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find
ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life,
able to marshal and direct our energies wisely...Since this is the kind of life
we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just
hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its
implications in every detail of our lives.

My Notes:

FRIDAY: Matthew 22:37-39 How to love

REFLECTION: Consider the ways in which you show that you love God.
PRAYER: As we enter this time of generosity and consecration, move me
to show you my love through my giving.
SATURDAY: Matthew 22:37-39 All of me
REFLECTION: Gods commandment to love is holistic, requiring heart,
soul, mind and strength we might even say its emotional, spiritual,
mental and physical.
PRAYER: All of me, Lord. I love you with all of me.
