Specification:
Title: Tablet PC Selection
As a manager in a business you will often have to decide which of several alternative
products to purchase. A Weighted Scoring Model can help you make a reasoned decision
that you will be able to justify to your manager. For evaluation purposes the Total Cost of
Ownership is more important than the purchase price, so this needs to be included in your
model.
For the purposes of this coursework, assume that you are a manager working for an
international company with a team of sales executives who need to be in constant contact
with Head Office. The Head Office is in your own country, and there is a group of managers
based there. Some staff will need to use their tablets worldwide.
You have been tasked to evaluate a range of tablets with built-in email and other
functionality (e.g. camera, media player, organiser, browser, GPS) to determine which is the
best one for the company to purchase for all its managers and sales executives. You have
been particularly asked to consider the Samsung Galaxy and the Apple iPad 2 as well as
other makes (e.g. Sony S, Motorola). You will need to consider the usability and functionality
of the system, both now and in the future, and the Total Cost of Ownership.
Members of staff currently use a range of models, which is expensive, difficult to manage,
and does not provide the level of functionality needed by the company. You have also been
asked to plan the implementation of the new tablets to all four hundred staff over the period
of a month. You need to decide how this is to be done, identifying responsibilities,
milestones, costs, etc. Make sure you allow for testing such that the chosen system meets
your requirements, and allow for post-implementation evaluation.
PART A The Weighted Scoring Model
(10% of this coursework)
Decide on a set of appropriate business-related factors and criteria to decide which tablet to
purchase. A 2-level Weighted Scoring Model MUST be used, and one of the factors must
be the Total Cost of Ownership.
PART B The Spreadsheet Model
(30% of this coursework)
Plan a spreadsheet-based 2-level Weighted Scoring Model to assess the packages against
the factors and criteria. Extend your spreadsheet to calculate the Total Cost of Ownership
4
for each of the tablets. Implement your plan to produce a robust and flexible spreadsheet
system for the purpose of selecting the package to purchase.
Your model should include
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
You MUST demonstrate your spreadsheet model to your tutor who will test it and mark it to
ensure that it meets requirements.
FAILURE TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR MODEL WILL MEAN THAT YOU WILL GET ZERO
FOR THIS PART OF THE COURSEWORK
PART C The Use of the Weighted Scoring Model
(20% of this coursework)
Use your spreadsheet model to compare and contrast the features of at least 4 different
tablets, and decide on which one best meets the requirements.
PART D The Presentation
(20% of this coursework)
Prepare and present a 10 minute presentation, with a maximum of 10 slides, to justify the
factors and criteria that were selected, the scores that were given to the tablets, and the final
recommendation.
You MUST give a presentation to your tutor and fellow students explaining your options and
your decision.
FAILURE TO GIVE A PRESENTATION WILL MEAN THAT YOU WILL GET A MAXIMUM
OF 10 MARKS OUT OF 20 FOR THIS TASK.
PART E - The Project Plan
(20% of this coursework)
Select a project management methodology to implement this project. This should include
allocation of responsibilities and resources, a work breakdown schedule, a Gantt chart, a
network diagram, identification of the critical path, etc.
Implement the plan using project management software.
Document the plan appropriately within the system (e.g. using notes with the project)
