Strikes set for 1, 8 & 16 December... Rally behind the BMA!

SUPPORT JUNIOR DOCTORS

STRIKING TO SAVE THE NHS

UNIOR DOCTORS HAVE VOTED by

98 percent to strike in their battle
to defend the NHS from Tory Jeremy
Hunts plans to slash unsocial hours
pay. Strike dates are set for 1, 8 & 16
December.
A national strike by junior doctors, who
are leading resistance to a major attack on
pay and on our NHS, can provide a focus
for everyone who wants to fight austerity.
Jeremy Corbyns election was a
reflection of a mood for an alternative
to austerity, and of a hopeful movement
that wants to defend our NHS and show
solidarity with refugees. The attack on the
NHS has been a central plank of the Tories
agenda. And so has their Trade Union Bill,
which passed its third reading this month
and represents a fundamental assault on
our right to strike and our civil liberties.
What better way to challenge the bill
than for doctors to strike to save the much
loved NHS? Dont believe the Tories lies.
Many people will see that it is doctors
who are fighting to save the NHS and the
Tories who are trying to destroy it.
It was fantastic to see the BMA name
strike dates, even before the ballot had
closed. The action plannedwith one
days strike with Christmas Day level of
emergency cover, and then two more strike
days with all junior doctors outsends a
strong message to Jeremy Hunt that junior
doctors are serious about this fight.

Vibrant

The huge demonstrations, with up

to 30,000 in London and thousands
elsewhere, were what kept up pressure on
BMA leaders to organise the ballot and
name dates for hard-hitting strikes.
This vibrant campaign, cheered on by
many who hate Tory austerity, has the
Tories on the back foot, intensifying the
crisis they found themselves in over tax
credits. Jeremy Hunt is scrambling around.
The 11 percent offer revealed the Tories
weakness. It shows that the campaign is
having an impact. But, rightly, it was met
with derision by many junior doctors.
The Tories want to increase doctors
normal working hours from 7am to
7pm Monday to Friday, to 7am to 10pm
Monday to Saturday. These new working
hours would see doctors pay cut by an
average of 30 percent!
So the 11 percent pay rise Hunt

Junior doctors are defending our NHS

announced is still a pay cut, on top of what

has been effectively a pay cut for five years
running. Junior doctors carry huge debts,
and work beyond contracted hours.
Hunt knows that the junior doctors will
win widespread support from the public.
He knows this could light a spark and give
confidence to the nurses, porters, OTs, to
follow suit and join the fight. This dispute is
about more than pay. The slogan, Not Fair,
Not Safe, highlights the impact on patients.

Solidarity

Thats why it has to be all out for the

strike dates starting 1 December, and why
other health workers, trade unionists, and
community campaigners should flood the
picket lines with solidarity.
Theyre not just fighting for their own
contracts, but for workers across the whole
NHS and to defend the service.
Its no coincidence that one of the first
things the Tories did was rush through an
attack on our right to strike.
The Tories want to weaken the force with
the power to mount real oppositionour
unions. The junior doctor strike takes place
in this context, and this is why it is even
more important to have an active strike,
with every junior doctor joining picket lines.
Junior doctors are the first to see an attack

on their unsocial hours come to fruition.

But we know that an attack on all NHS
workers unsocial hours is waiting in the
wings if the Tories manage to restrict our
right to strike back.
The NHS pay strikes at the end of 2014
were a magnificent show of workers
across the NHSblack and white,
migrant and non-migrantall coming
together to defend our NHS. After the
horrific events in Paris, the right wing
press and the Tories will try to scapegoat
Muslims and whip up racism to divide us.

Cultures

The NHS s a brilliant example of why

immigration is not the problem and why
multiculturalism must be defended.
The NHS would not exist without
migrants and many different cultures.
What we need to beat the Tories
is united actionwhere we all stand
together in mass, national coordinated
strikes to win.
The junior doctors strikes are a chance
to win an important victory to defend our
NHS, our pay and drive back austerity.
Everyone who cares about the NHS
must rally behind the junior doctorsthis
is a fight we can win.
