Bucilla White Crochet Hooks, Sizes 4 and 5.

AFGHAN STITCH STRIPSWith rose J and size 4 hook, ch 15, draw up a loop through the horizontal bar in the back of second
and all succeeding ch sts, retaining all 15 loops on hook. This is half of the afghan row. Work off as follows: yarn over and through
end loop, * over and through 2 loops; repeat from * to the end. 2nd row: the loop that remains on the hook is the first st of this row.
Pick up a loop through the second and all succeeding vertical bars, retaining loops on hook. Work off as directed for first row.
Repeat 2nd row until there are 303 rows, strip should measure about 67 inches. Afghan may be made in any desired length, but
the number of rows in afghan strip should always be a multiple of 8, less 1 row. Bind off with a row of slip sts. Make 2 of these
strips.
SHADED PATTERN STRIPES The shaded pattern is worked lengthwise on sides of afghan strips. With rose F and size 5 hook,
work 1 s c on edge of each of the first 3 rows (taking up 2 threads on edge); * yarn over hook, insert hook under bar of the 2nd

afghan st in same row as last s c (insert hook from below up), yarn over and draw up a loop, over and through 2 loops, yarn over
hook twice, insert hook under bar of 3rd afghan st in next row and draw up a loop, over and through 2 loops, over and through 2
loops; yarn over, insert hook under bar of 2nd afghan st in next row and draw up a loop, over and through 2 loops, over and
through 3 loops, over and through the remaining 2 loops on hook; skip 1 row on edge (the row right behind the treble). 1 s c in each
of the next 7 rows; repeat from * ending row with 3 s c after the last "claw stitch," as at beginning of row.
2nd row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each st, taking up both threads of st below. 3rd row: ch 1, turn, work 1 s c in first st of preceding row,
yarn over, insert hook around stem of 2nd s c in first row, and draw up a loop, over and through 2 loops, * over, insert hook in same
place as before and draw up a loop, over and through 2 loops, repeat from * once, over and through 3 loops, over and through the
remaining 2 loops on hook (puff stitch); * skip the s c right back of the puff st just made, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 puff st
around the next st in first row (the 4th st from last puff st); repeat from last * to end of row. (The first puff st rows should appear
somewhat fuller than afghan st strip; as work proceeds, the pattern will draw in and work become even.) 4th row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c
in each st. 5th row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each of the first 3 sts, * 1 puff st around next st in 2nd row down (center st of group of 3 s c),
1 s c in each of the next 3 s c; repeat from * to end of row and fasten off. The last 4 rows make the pattern, repeat them
continuously in colors as follows: 4 rows each of rose G, H, I and J; 1 puff st row and 1 s c row in black; 4 rows each of grey A, B,
C, D and E. Work same pattern on other side of afghan strip, being careful to begin and end the first row (the claw-st row) with 3 s
c; the claw sts will then come exactly opposite (i.e. on same rows).
This is half of afghan; work a duplicate piece on second afghan strip, but begin the first lengthwise row (the claw-st row) with 1 s c
instead of 3 s c, as in first half, and the 3rd lengthwise row (the first puff st row) with 3 s c instead of 1 s c; this must be done in
order to have the puff sts alternate, when the two halves of afghan are joined.
JOINING Crochet the two halves together with a row of slip sts, as follows: place the two pieces together, wrong sides out; with
grey E make a loop on hook, insert hook in first st of upper piece, and also in first st of under piece, yarn over and through all loops
on hook, * insert hook in next st on both pieces and work off as a slip st; repeat from * to end and fasten off.
BORDER-All rows in border are worked from right side of afghan. With size 5 hook and rose J. work 1 s c in each st on sides, 3 s
c in corner sts and 1 st in each row, or st, on ends; join with a slip st in first s c of round and fasten off. 2nd round: with grey E,
make 1 s c in each st, 3 s c in corner sts; join and fasten off. 3rd round: with rose J, make 1 d c in 4th st before a corner st, ch 1, 1
d c in same st as last d c, ch 1, 1 d c in same st (an open shell), skip 1 st, 1 s c in next st, skip next st, an open shell of 3 d c in
corner st, skip 1 st, * 1 s c in next st, skip 1 st, an open shell of 3 d c in next st, skip 2 sts; repeat from * around, spacing sts toward
end of rows so that a shell will come exactly at each corner; join with a slip st in top of first d c of round, and fasten off. 4th round:
with black, work 1 s c in center d c of first shell, after a corner shell, * 3 d c in next s c, 1 s c in center d c of next shell; repeat from *
to corner shell, 1 s c in first d c of corner shell, 3 d c in 2nd d c, 1 s c in 3rd d c, * 3 d c in next s c, 1 s c in center d c of next shell;
repeat from last * to next corner. Continue in this way to end of round, join and fasten off. 5th round: with rose I, work 1 s c in center

d c of a black shell, * 5 d c around the post of center d c of open shell in 3rd round, 1 s c in top of center d c in next black shell ;
repeat from * to corner, 5 d c around the post of first d c of the rose corner shell in 3rd round, 1 s c in top of center d c of black
corner shell, 5 d c around the post of last d c of same rose shell in 3rd round, 1 s c in top of center d c of next black shell; continue
in this way to end of round, join and fasten off. Final round: with grey D, * work 1 s c in each of the first 2 d c in rose shell below,
insert hook in top of next d c, insert it also in top of the s c right behind it in black yarn row, and make 1 s c; 1 s c in each of the
remaining 2 d c of rose shell, skip the rose s c in 5th round; repeat from * to end of round, join and fasten off. Darn in ends.
