Hello Everybody,
Advent. The anticipation and excitement of waiting the arrival of the New King, and
for poor Mary that arduous journey with a big bump to contend with, it cant have
been easy and she must have felt afraid. But we all know she coped and provided
us with the best ever reason to celebrate, and so we should. Deck the Halls and
get those baubles out.
Our family have had our own advent with the (quite reluctant) arrival of Delphine, a
healthy 9lb 3ozs, but the mix of worry, excitement, and waiting was just the same
for our first-time mum, but well worth it, and now we have our first granddaughter to
share Christmas with.
So it just leaves me to wish you a Happy, joyous Christmas and a healthy, funpacked New Year from me, Steve and the Voice Team.

GRIMSTON MEDICAL CENTRE

01485 600341
CONJUNCTIVITIS
This is a condition that usually recovers fully without medical
treatment. Symptoms are red, itchy eyes, often accompanied by
a yellow or green discharge that causes the eyelids to stick
together in the morning. Bathing the eyes is often all that is
needed, though persistent infections may require medical
treatment.

Eye bathing
Use water that has been previously
boiled and allowed to cool. Soak a
new cotton wool ball. Wipe the
eyes gently with this to remove the
discharge and crusting several times
a day. Discard the cotton wool after
each use.

When to see the doctor

If conjunctivitis persists for more than four days
If you have eye pain
If your vision is affected
If you wear contact lenses
If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell
Is it contagious?
Conjunctivitis is highly contagious, so keep children with
conjunctivitis away from school or nursery until the condition
is cured.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Christmas Love it or Loathe it?
Some would say the best thing about Christmas is the preparation! The days leading up
to the big day; hearing a favourite carol or Christmas hit on the radio, decorating the tree,
especially if it's a real one that fills the house with the aroma of pine. Then there's the
shops, bustling, busy, full of sparkle and colour, green, red and gold. The children's
school concerts and nativity plays are a must see if you can. Or maybe it's the church
services, fun family services and Christingles, churches full of lit candles, traditional
carols sung and shared and hearing the Christmas story one more time. There is the
sense that something really special is just around the corner. The lead up to Christmas
can be full of expectation, anticipation and HOPE.
Others would say they love Christmas because of the LOVE! Love shared openly with
family and friends Christmas cheer and Christmas spirit in full flow (and not all of the
alcoholic variety!) It is about showing our love and receiving love from family and
friends. But for some, of course, Christmas does not hold such things they may well
say they loathe Christmas! For those who are alone Christmas can be a special day
with no-one around and the lonely then feel very alone indeed! So we all need to
remember to share our love with those we know who are alone and isolated by popping
round to say hello, showing them that they are cared about and loved. For many people
Christmas Day is filled with a special kind of love, a love found in going to visit someone
or even to help prepare and serve Christmas lunch for others.
So what about the Big Day. The Special Day! For many it is pure JOY. There are the
church services in the morning (don't forget!) then perhaps favourite Christmas films
and shows on the tele. And of course the presents; the joy and the excitement of tearing
off the wrapping paper, shouts of surprise and laughter. Followed by seven times more
than we can possibly eat! Then there's the fun and frivolity, paper hats, crackers
popping and the obligatory family board games and charades! Oh JOY!
Whatever the holiday means for you, whether you relish the hope in the build-up, love
the love given and received, or enjoy the joy in the day itself - or if it is a difficult day for
you love it or loathe it - it is good and right that we remember that all this was started in
the mystery of God coming to share our lives in the form of a little child.
And that child brought with Him the Hope and Love and Joy that we will find by putting
our trust in Him He is our greatest gift for all of us for all eternity. Knowing that leads
us to one response only REJOICE!
I pray that your Christmas this year will be full of Hope and Love and Joy & every
blessing
Revd Jane

It was reported the Chair of Leziate

Parish Council had, earlier in the day,
placed a poppy wreath on the war
memorial at Ashwicken Church, on
behalf of the parish. It was a simple
reflective time as the Parish Council
remembered the ultimate sacrifice
that had been given by villagers in
the past.
The Council is still waiting for quotes
to arrive regarding the boundary on
the left hand side of the village hall
drive. The boundary trees and
hedges need pruning back and this
will be discussed at the next meeting
in December.
Councillors were concerned and
dismayed that it appeared Highways
had not actioned much if at all any of
the work that was promised back in
summer, although it was good to see
the bus stop being reinstated, along
Gayton Road.
A Parishioner had reported they are
contemplating raising a petition to
reduce the speed limit along East
Winch Road. The Parish Council
agreed to support this.
The Council confirmed that Holt
House Lane is a highway but classed

Primary School

At the beginning of November we held

a very popular Multicultural Week in
school.
The children were involved in a variety
of activities including Bollywood
dancing, traditional indian dancing with
costumes, stories about Diwali and
food tasting from around the world.
Parents brought in amazing dishes to
sample from Egypt, Poland, America,
India, Pakistan, Africa, France and
Germany.

Leziate WI October meeting

There were 17 members present to
enjoy our speaker Michael Aldiss talking
about Victorian King's Lynn. We were
shown slides of many Victorian
buildings, such as the town hall where
the police station was housed with cells,
St Mararet's, St John's and St Nicholas'
church schools, lots of chapels, alms
houses built in this era, the Walks,
docks, Corn Exchange, railway station,
Frederick Savage Iron Works I could
go on! Michael held our interest and we
have a town to be proud of. Michael
was thanked by Eileen Baxter.
Our competition was Victorian
memorabilia won by Jan Eason, 2nd
Violet Giles, 3rd Ann Rainbird.
An invitation had been received from
Caithness Glass to attend their opening
evening on 17 November, which was for
all local WI members. There were free
refreshments and raffle, and we bought
Christmas presents and watched the
glass blowers creating lovely glassware.
Ali, a member of our WI, told us that her
husband Stewart had run in the Dublin
Marathon in aid of The Kidney
Transplant Unit at Addenbrooke's
Hospital as in 1999 he had donated one
of his kidneys to his son Joel, and in
2002 his other son Oliver had received a
kidney donated by an unknown donor.
We were all very happy to sponsor
Stewart via his wife Ali, who is a valued
member of our WI. In total Stewart
raised over 3000 for this worthy cause
and it was the first time he had run a
marathon
Our Christmas dinner will be arranged
for early December and will be at the
Farmer's Arms at Knights Hill. Our
December meeting will be our AGM.

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 9th November 2015
Development in Gayton
The Council was pleased to see so
many residents at its meeting. It was
clear that the potential for a further 150
homes in the Parish has caused
widespread concern. The Parish
Council acknowledged its limited
powers in this area and it was noted
that development across the Country
is now driven by National Policy
following the decision that the Borough
Council does not have a five year land
supply. This means that development
boundaries no longer apply and that
developers are likely to receive
planning permission on land that would
have previously been refused. The
Chairman urged all residents present
to make comments on any future
planning applications themselves as
each comment, as long as it raises
issues relative to national planning
policy, holds as much as weight as the
comments that the Parish Council can
make.
New School In Gayton
It was also clear from an informal show
of hands that the swell of opinion
among the residents who attended the
meeting is that Gayton does need a
new School but not at the currently
proposed site at the junction of Back
Street and Winch Road. The Council
agreed to facilitate another public
meeting for residents to meet with
planners from Norfolk County Council
to discuss their concerns about the
proposed site. Mr Beales reported that
Gayton Estate had provided a map
showing the land it had available, as
the land owner providing the land to
NCC, and the site had been chosen by

Norfolk County Council planners. A

demographic map does show that the
majority of children attending the
current School do live near to the
proposed new site, which appears to
be some of the justification for it. It is
hoped to arrange a meeting with NCC
soon.
Dog fouling
The Council noted initiatives
undertaken by other Parish Councils
in the Country and agreed that some
of these aren't appropriate for
Gayton. However, the Council told all
residents present that they can report
anyone for dog fouling to the Borough
Council and the offender could
receive up to a 1000 fine. If you
would like to report cases of dog
fouling, as much information as
possible is useful such as the name
of dog owner, address of dog owner,
description of the dog owner, breed
and description of the dog. Please
report to the Borough Council on
01553 616200 or by email to
CSNN@west-norfolk.gov.uk
There is one vacancy on the Council
which needs to be filled by co-option.
If anyone is interested in joining the
Council, they should contact the
Clerk in the first instance.

7.30pm on 14th December at Gayton

GAYTON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Our November meeting held on Tuesday 3rd was taken up largely by the Annual Meeting.
This is when a new Committee is formed consisting of members undertaking various
roles in order to lead us through the next 12 months. Reports were given on our financial
situation as well as on the talks and events we've been involved in over the past year.
It's always surprising looking back as to how busy we've been, even more so in this W.I.
Centenary Year. Members appreciated the work undertaken by the Committee and this
year particularly of retiring members, President Penny Andrews, Secretary, Jan
Newman and Programme Planner, Anne Manning. The new Committee numbers 6
members and our County Advisor, Meg Dorling was on hand to oversee the ballot for
President, the outcome of which was the election of Gillian Smith
.
During the serving of refreshments members enjoyed completing a quiz with Margaret
McKay, Judy Venables and Marion Scales gaining prizes. Kath Roberts won the
competition with her prettily carved and lit pumpkin
.
.
Members were thanked for their contributions to the catering for the Federation 'Fun,
Food and Fitness' Day at Middleton Village Hall on 27th October and transport
arrangements were made for the visit to Caithness Crystal on 17th November.
The programme for 2016 has been completed and copies will be available to view at
various establishments in the village. We'll be celebrating again in the early part of the
year. This time it will be Gayton Institute's 70th birthday
Our next meeting on Tuesday 1st December will be a Christmas Party with Rachel
Duffield enlightening us on the Seven Ages of Women! Why not join us, ladies, at the
Jubilee Hall, 7.30 pm when you'll receive a warm welcome.

Autumn Term Awards 2015

We are very proud to announce that
Gayton Church of England Primary
School has achieved the Sainsburys
School Games Silver Mark and the
Healthy Schools Award.

The School Games Mark is a

Government led awards
scheme launched in 2012 to reward
schools for their commitment to the
development of competition across
their school and into the community.
Our children have taken part in
numerous Cluster Sports Events
including archery, hockey, rugby and
gymnastics. During the school day
the children receive high quality
Sports coaching through Edufit, Top
Coaching and our own NPECTs
trained TA. We also offer a great
range of clubs for all abilities.
This term we have taken part in the
Cross Country Event, where 7 of our
pupils qualified for the area final and
more recently we took 2 teams to
the Glebe Hockey festival.

I had a day off on 'magazine day' last month so was lucky to

be able to see the magazine bundles being collected from
Bridge House by our kind volunteers. Fortified with a
delicious cup of coffee from the Curreys I snapped a photo
of each one. Two are featured this month, look out for
others to come. Sarah
The Magazine Team : Gayton Thorpe
Bev Edge not only collects the magazines for Gayton Thorpe,
he also delivers and here he is with the November issue. If
you see him walking round the village every month, you now
know why! Thank you Bev.
The Magazine Team: East Winch
George Brown collects all of East Winch's magazines and
then he and his wife, Elsie, deliver the bundles to the
houses of those who kindly distribute the magazine in
East Winch. Thank you George & Elsie.
Thank you to all our deliverers in all our Villages. Without
you we could not go on and we look forward to 2016 as
we continue to support village life in Gayton, Gayton
Thorpe, East Walton, Ashwicken, Leziate & Bawsey, &
East Winch with West Bilney.

Before you say "I don't believe"

Roger Carswell
8:30am Saturday 12th Dec. 2015 Dukes Head Hotel PE30 1JS

Roger Carswell is one of this country's most effective evangelists and has spent his
Christian life sharing the gospel. He says the truest act of friendship is to introduce
someone to Jesus.
It has become fashionable to believe that Christians are a deluded naive lot,
following myths and fairy tales and that science has debunked the need for God in
society today.
But Roger Carswell says NO Christian faith is not a leap in the dark, it is founded on
so much evidence that the nonbeliever is the one who has questions to answer.
So before you say "I don't believe" come and hear Roger Carswell on the 12th Dec.
9.50 includes a full english, tea or coffee and oodles of toast and jam!

I Keep My Snowman in the Freezer

By Ian McMillan
I keep my snowman in the freezer, just behind the pies
He likes it there, he told me so, I could see it in his eyes.
I made him on a cold, cold morning when the snow was fresh and deep
Now he sits in the freezer with the fish that we got cheap.
I keep my snowman in the freezer and look at him each day
If I'd left him in the garden, he would simply have melted away.
But now he's like my Grandma, living somewhere safe and nice.
He's in a frosty, snowy palace, on a throne of coldest ice.
I keep my snowman in the freezer near a lump of frozen beef.
And I've got a treat for him in August.
I'm taking him to Tennerife!

EAST WINCH NEWS

East Winch Parish Council Meeting 2nd November 2015.

Councillors Toby Coke (NCC) and Jim Moriarty (KLWNBC) both attended. Cllr. Coke
particularly wanted to inform us that over the next 3 years, NCC's budget would be
cut by 111 million. Though the council was investigating sharing some resources
with neighbouring counties, the cuts would hurt, with children's services being a likely
casualty among others. NCC wants to hear the public's views on what could or could
not be cut.
The contract giving the Parish Council ownership of the telephone box is about to be
signed. Though we would like to move it, BT advises against it, as not only is it
extremely heavy, and would have to have the electrics dug out, but the cast iron
frame is very brittle, and movement might break it.
The Walton Rd sign on the A47 is going to have another sign fixed to the back of it so
that it can be seen from either direction.
The street lights in Town Close are to be replaced by LED lighting soon. This will
save electricity and maintenance charges. A complaint about the road surface in
Town Close had been received. It was felt that, though rough, there were no
potholes, and in any case it would be better to wait till after the winter if repairs were
needed. The resurfacing of the footpath seems to have been done well in places, but
poorly in others.
In the play area, the Council is researching the best sort of bench to install, and the
clerk is to investigate the cost of removing the tyres.
Jennifer Lamb spoke about her Neighbourhood Watch group, which has also set up
a No Cold Calling area. She said it has had a beneficial effect on the people within
the area, and encouraged others to set up similar groups. Her Neighbourhood Watch
scheme mainly involves informal social gatherings through which members find out
when their neighbours will be away and, most important, get to know each other.
The extension of the silica sand mining was discussed, as there is now a 6-week
consultation period about the next potential areas for extraction: an area running
from Church Lane south through Bilney Woods towards Shouldham. One of the
concerns is the proposal that lorries carrying the sand to Leziate should use
Common Rd and the A47. A meeting will be arranged during the consultation period.
The next regular meeting will be on Monday, 4th January 2016.

A children's service bringing the beauty of Christmas to young and old. Everyone has
an orange with a candle in it, symbolising the light of Jesus in the world. We will be
collecting money for the Children's Society, which supports children who need help
and understanding all over England and Wales.

East Winch Church News

Yes it's happened! The work is finished! A bit later than expected, it's true,
but we were finally signed off on 6th November. The last thing to be
finished was the doorstep for the west door, as the stone the builder had
hoped to use turned out to be faulty and he had to get another one.
A wonderful team of volunteers cleaned the church (and my goodness there was a
lot to clean!), transforming it just before the All Saints Day service on 2nd November.
It is now clean, reasonably warm compared with how chilly it used to be, and though
we can't get rid of the bats, most of them leave the church in the winter. Inside the
church there's a display of photos of the work carried out and of the grotesque heads
round the windows which are too high up to see from the ground. A larger selection
of photos is displayed on the East Winch and West Bilney website.
One embarrassing thing is that no-one noticed until the scaffolding was
down that after repainting the clock faces, the hands had been replaced
so that they showed different times. This is not easy to rectify from
nside, and we'll have to get a specialist in to fix it. Bother!

GAYTON THORPE NEWS

"Church internal changes progress
We have received permission to remove the rereridos for investigation purposes, so
we can see what the situation is with the wall behind it. Investigations will happen in
the New Year, following which we can look at what needs to be done, if anything. We
also have permission to limewash the interior of church, which can be carried out in
the Spring.
Christmas Carol Service
Our Carols by Candlelight will be held on the 21st December at 7pm. Do come along
and join us for a good sing and festive refreshments afterwards.
We will be needing readers for the Carol Service. If you or someone you know would
like to read, please let me know on 07776 158659.
We will be decorating the church for the Christmas Carol Service in the morning of
11th December. If you would like to help, feel free to come along and join the fun!"

Nar Valley Ornithological Society (NarVOS)

Tuesday 26th January 2016, 7.30pm at the Barn Theatre, Sacred Heart Convent
School, Swaffham. Access and parking from Sporle Road.
Please come along to this illustrated talk by Sue Bryan, entitled:

Peru

Many of you know Sue Bryan as a NarVOS member as well as for her work at RSPB
Titchwell. Sue loves birdwatching, be it local or across the globe, and she has made at
least two trips to Peru. Her presentation is bound to bring out the best of this birding
paradise. This NarVOS meeting will start with a short AGM, prior to Sue's talk, but we
request that everyone turns up for 7.30pm.
Visitors most welcome. Admission 2 on the night if you are not a NarVOS member.
For more information about this meeting or NarVOS call Ian Black on 01760 724092.

EAST WALTON NEWS

East Walton Milestone
Apparently we have a very good example of a milestone situated on the Greyhound
corner. It's rare to find these complete. The style of the East Walton inscription dates
the stone at 1700. Until it is set up again we don't know where it is measuring to.
There is a Milestone Society who would assist us to set it upright and tell us more
about its history. If anyone would like to join us for an erection and wetting of the
milestone text me on 07974770067 and I will be able tell you when.

Bonfire
After a very wet and blustery setting up, Saturday evening turned out just fine for our
annual bonfire. Do you know we had a staggering 900 people on the meadow
enjoying our spectacle!
I won't say it was easy, but admission was collected, burgers sold, beer and cider
barrels emptied and cakes sold out within hour. Miraculously the scouts got all the
vehicles on and all the vehicles off.
Nobody noticed the downgraded (because of the wind) special fire lighting effect and
the fireworks were our best yet.
Our chosen charity this year is Riding for the Disabled. Thanks everyone.
