US History 2 Imperialism

Describe the motivating factors and effects in American imperialism.
Vocabulary: imperialism, protectorate, annexation, self-determination

2. Objectives
Students will be able to identify 3 reasons for American Imperialism by the end of the
period.
Students will be able to identify important locations of imperialism by the end of the
period.
Students will be able to define Imperialism, Protectorate, Annexation, and SelfDetermination by the end of the period.

Before students enter, throughout the whiteboards write:

2. Once students enter, hand out 2 hole punched notecards and a ring to each student.
a. Model to the class to put their name, class and block number on one notecard and write and
answer the question on the overhead on the second one. Share out.
Overhead questions: Why do you come to class? What encourages you
to be on time? What is your favorite movie of all time?
3. Explain that every day there will be a new question that relates to what they will learn or have
learned the day before. The notecards will be kept on their ring. If they miss a day, they are
responsible for making a card for the day they missed. It is a good resource for studying as well
as a pretty big points assignment. They will be checked on a regular basis.

4. Hand out folders and have them put their names on them.Left pocket label as ungraded.
Right pocket label as graded Explain that their work will be kept in the folders and the folders do
NOT go home. Assignments will be graded from the folder so if its not in the folder it cannot be
graded.
5. Entry activity: Have students walk the room and use a dry erase marker to write why the United
States is involved with the countries written on the board.
Example:
Moon-Exploration
China-Cheap labor
Iraq-Oil
South Korean-Military base against North Korea
Japan-Electronics, military base
6. Discuss why the US needs to be involved in these places.
7. Powerpoint, Imperialism, Who, what, where, when, why
8. Maps activity, three options:
1. Use a computer to fill in map on worksheet
2. Create interactive timeline/map using myhistro.com (Must be completed within the period)
3. Use a textbook or classroom map to complete imperialism worksheet
9. Completed worksheets should be placed in ungraded side of folder. If doing an online activity,
link should be written on top of assignment for teacher to check.

6. Assessment
Students will fill out Imperialism Worksheet with 90% accuracy. Map skills reteaching as
necessary.

7. Reflection
Reflect on the planning and presentation of the lesson.
