What is hour of code?

TheweekofDecember7th­13thisthe“HourofCode”(alsoComputerScienceEducation

Week)sponsoredbyCode.org. Duringthistimestudentsaroundtheworldwillgetan introductiontocomputerprogramming­nopriorexperienceisrequired(bystudentor teacher).Students(orteachers)willchoosehowtospendtheirHourofCodethrough game­basedactivitiesonlineoronaniPad. Thereare“unplugged”activitiesforthosethatdon’t

wanttousetechnologyfortheHourofCode.Thisisaworldwideinitiativewithover100million

learnersin196countries!

Thegoaloftheeventistopromotecomputerscienceasanoptionforfuturecareers. Thehope isthatbyexposingstudentstocoding,especiallygirls,studentswillbeencouragedtoexplore codingfurther. TheDepartmentofLaboranticipatescomputersciencewillbeoneofthe fastest­growingandhighest­payingindustriesinthefuture.

How it Will Work At Coonley

● DuringtheweekofDecember7th­13thteacherswillchooseONEHOURtodedicateto

theHourofCode(ThereisnotaspecifichourfortheHourofCode­itcantakeplace anytimethroughouttheweek).

K­4TeachersmaychoosetodoHourofCodeduringtheirtypingperiod. Please filloutwhatday(s)/time(s)youarecompletingyourHourofCodehere.Ifyouare usingyourtypingtimepleasesimplyput“HOC”byyourname.Websiteswithlesson plansareincludedinthisdocument. Teacherscanchooseanyactivityfortheir classroomtocomplete. Lessonscanbebrokenupintosmallersessions(aslongasyou aredevotingaminimumofonehourfortheweek). Itisrecommendedthatteacherslook throughtheactivitiesanddecidewhichlooksbestfortheirstudents

Thereisnoset­in­stonewaytocompleteHourofCode! Teacherscanchooseactivitiesonthe iPads,laptops,computerlab,Chromebooksoreven“unplugged”activitiesthatincludeno technologyatall! Teacherscanofferstudentsachoice,assignonetutorialforeveryone,have coding“stations”withdifferentapplications,partnerwithanolder/youngerclassroom,have studentsworkindependentlyorinpairs,etc.AllHourofCodeactivitiesareself­guidedanddo notrequireaccounts/signingin/signingupforactivities.
