Keystone was created by Michigan hospitals with a commitment to improve safety and reduce costs by enhancing the quality of care given. The first initiatives focused on care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and surgical settings. Data reflects that Keystone hospitals have saved more than 1,800 lives, $271 million in hospital costs, and more than 140,000 excess hospital stay days between 2004 and 2009. “Winning the 2009 Eisenberg Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality Award is a testament to the committed clinical teams, administrators and trustees of Michigan’s non-profit hospitals,” stated MHA President, Spencer Johnson. “Our initiative, as a whole, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to support clinicians in their voluntary endeavors,” Johnson added. The Award, for Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality at a National Level, noted that the Keystone Center used a quality improvement collaborative to focus on interventions to improve patient safety and prevent harm in intensive care units. Two of the interventions, eliminating Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) and the Comprehensive Unit-

FREMONT — The Michigan Health and Hospital Association’s quality initiative (The Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality) has won the National Eisenberg Innovations in Patient Safety and Quality Award from the National Quality Forum and the Joint Commission – a national accrediting organization for hospitals. GMHS has been a part of the ICU Keystone Initiative since its inception in 2003.

Local Census centers to provide assistance
Stanton- By now, most Montcalm County residents have received their 2010 U.S. Census form in the mail or at their door. Make sure you don’t mistake it for another piece of junk mail as it is quite possibly one of the most important pieces of mail you will receive this decade. When you receive your census form, just answer the 10 questions (it should take about 10 minutes) and return it in the postage-paid envelope provided. Information that you provide will be used for statistical purposes only; your personal data is protected under federal law and is strictly confidential. Lisa Lund, who is staff to the Montcalm Human Services Coalition, said “People who have questions, need assistance completing the form, or need replacement forms can get help in one of two ways- in person or by phone.” The Montcalm Human Services Coalition has advocated for adequate and accessible local Census assistance for Montcalm County residents. To get help in person, people can stop by a local Census Questionnaire Assistance Center (QAC). Through mid-April, four community organizations located in Edmore, Greenville, Howard City, and Stanton are doing their part to ensure that every resident is counted by serving as a QAC. A U.S census employee will be available to assist community members in completing census forms and assist with other Censusrelated needs. People are seen on a

Patriots of the Month
Colin Scholtens & Ike Higgin
Congratulations to Colin Scholtens and Ike (Isaac) Higgins for being selected by the staff as our “Patriots of the Month” for the excellent display of RESPECT. Colin, the son of Rob and Anne Scholtens of Kent City, is a second grade student. “I thought it was pretty good, because I saw Lizzie get one, and I was thinking I would like to get one. At first I was kind of embarrassed, but then I got kind of used to it, so yah…” commented Colin when he was asked what he thought when he was presented with the award. Colin attends the Grant Christian Reformed Church and some of his favorite verses are from Luke 2:4-16, “because it tells about how Jesus was being born. I liked how they said how the shepherds were so scared and like how a whole bunch of angels were saying Glory to God in the highest.” Some of his other favorites include: macaroni & cheese, hotdogs, pizza, and hamburgers; red, white & blue; Bible; and playing soccer. If Colin could give people a piece of advice it would be, “to have respect for adults and parents.” Respect, to Colin, means, “It means you say things like excuse me and please and all polite words.” Ike Higgins is the son of Jeremy & Becky Higgins of Grant, and is a Kindergarten student. “Excited, Pretty cool,” commented Ike when he was asked what he thought when he was presented with the award. Ike attends St. Bart’s Catholic Church in Newaygo and he could not pick a favorite verse, “I like them all, it is to hard to pick a favorite,” said Ike. Some of his other favorites include: play with friends at recess, sandwiches, and the color blue. When asked about what Respect meant to him, Ike commented “Using your manners.”

Sand Lake students visit the Grands Rapids Symphony
By Garrett eBenhoh
Sand Lake Elementary 5th grade students had a great time at the Grand Rapids Symphony. It was what they were looking forward to for the whole week. The students at the school loved the firebird symphony. They were bouncing off the walls in anticipation of it. “I love the symphony because of the vibrations from the instruments. You can feel the music, not just hear it.” stated Garrett Ebenhoh. To go there and experience it in person is more meaningful then just hearing it on the radio. Remington McKinnon from Sand Lake Elementary was the guest conductor for the symphony. “I was excited and a little nervous my legs were shaking” said Remington McKinnon. She did a great job. Thank you for letting us come Grand Rapids symphony it was a very memorable day. I hope the 5th grade students can come again.

Croton Community Church has much to offer
After 59 years, the Croton Community Church wants to let people know it still has much to offer. The church was started in 1951, by Pastor Ralph Redding. It was a small white church then, but eventually, more space was needed for Sunday classrooms. The church purchased the old gymnasium at the end of Wealthy Street in Croton. That was approximately 12 years ago, and now they are a “small church tucked in a big building”. This building is familiar to a lot of the locals because for many years it was a roller skating rink. A unique location for a unique little church. While the address is actually 5750 E. Wealthy Street, folks are just as apt to get there following the simple direction of “Go East at the Croton Library - straight to end of Road”. Many pastors and guest speakers have passed through the doors over the years, but the church now has a full time congregational leader in Pastor Dwight Reed. Pastor Reed, and his wife Jane reside in Muskegon, however enjoying the beauty of the Croton area, they also camp seasonally at the Croton Township Campground. The Reeds have two adult children, who serve as missionaries in Bolivia, South America, and five grandchildren. The church offers a full calendar of events, and has started wonderful traditions by offering their Annual Pig Roast in April, Vacation Bible School in August, their famous Swiss Steak Dinner in September, and of course their Halloween event, which includes dressing up, games, candy, donuts, cider and hot coffee, to warm all the Croton families and friends. The year is ended with a heartwarming Christmas program featuring guest singers and a program put on by the “Cherub Choir”, something not to be missed, really putting you in the Christmas Spirit. April will be a very busy month for the church, starting with the Easter

Service, where there will be inspiring music, an Easter message, and Children’s Church, with crafts and an Easter Story, and ending with a fun Easter egg hunt. On April 11th, there will be a free showing of the movie “fireproof”, which will be a lead in to study classes on marriage and parenting, lead by Pastor Reed and his wife. Call 231-652-4120 to find out more about the movie and classes. Take a drive through Croton, and stop by any Sunday or Wednesday and meet Pastor Reed and the rest of the church family....good food and good people. This “small church tucked in a big building” has a lot to offer.

Based Safety Program (CUSP) have produced notable results (as mentioned above). Additionally, the MHA had created collaborative work around a Keystone Surgical Initiative focused on elimination of surgicalsite infections and wrong-site surgery. This focus, especially on Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI), was actually the first Keystone project implemented at GMHS. The Keystone Center Initiatives have been studied by national and international health care organizations, and are becoming models for use across the world. The next two (2) Keystone programs will focus on safety and quality in the ER and OB. Gerber Memorial is also participating in these new initiatives. “Patient safety and quality is at the very center of what we do,” said Barb Wainright, Director of Quality Management at GMHS. “Our participation in MHA Keystone: ER and MHA Keystone: OB will further ensure our patients receive the safest, highest quality care, and that both patient and staff satisfaction will increase.”

Donation to Helping Hands
It is clear that this community is not lacking in individuals and businesses that care about serving others. On March 11th Latitude staff member Chad Stockwell presented $1000 to the President of Helping Hands, Joyce Ebenstein. This $1000 represented proceeds from the Winterfest Entertainment Tent held January 15th and 16th. Proceeds from this event were also donated to Field of Dreams Foundation. Helping Hands is very pleased to announce a partnership of service to the community by the building of a relationship with My Friend’s Closet located at 841 Shaw Street next to BC Pizza in Howard City. They are asking that people from the community consider donating their gently used, and freshly laundered clothing to My Friend’s Closet knowing that it will be put to use in serving the needs of those in the community who are not able to purchase clothing for their family based on the challenging economic circumstances in our area. This program is expected to be just one of several new visions that the Helping Hands organization has for the community. Considerable discussion has been occurring with the local ministerial association as to expansion of the Helping Hands ministry and more details will be emerging in the coming weeks and months regarding those efforts. Helping Hands has a strong foundation of support in our local community and greatly appreciates that support as it continues its nearly 20 year history of service to the community. TO THE EDITOR: Nobody ever does anything wrong. At least that is what I’ve learned in the last few years. People always justify their actions with a rationalization; the conclusion is then that nobody does anything bad or hurtful or wrong because there was a reason for it. That’s what I remind myself when rotten things happen, like having my son’s Christmas present stolen off the front porch. On March 4, Fedex delivered a 52 lb package to the front door of my home at 130 Godfrey in Howard City; it was a bed shaped like a fire truck for my 2 year old son, a gift from his grandmother. We never received the package and now my son just doesn’t get a bed. Maybe the party who pilfered it thinks we are wealthy and can just go out and buy a new one, and they don’t care that we can’t. Maybe it just looked too easy and nothing should be that tempting. Or maybe the economic hard times just dull one’s conscience about what is really wrong with stealing. Whatever the storyline, the ending is the same; a sad little boy and a mom who has to teach him a lesson about people that I wish I could spare him until he was a bit older. BRANDY ANTOR Howard City

March 29, 2010

On Wednesday, February 24, Mrs. Fessenden’s class at MacNaughton Elementary got into the Olympic spirit. An opening ceremony took place before the games began. The students paraded through the halls of the school, carrying torches and waving flags, which they had made themselves. The class participated in several classroom Olympic games. Number counting/calculations race, coloring competition, vocabulary slalom, and curling were a few of the games the Olympiads competed in. Medals were awarded, followed by another parade in the closing ceremonies. It was a fun competition.

No School on Friday, April 2 — through April 9. School will resume on April 12. On Wednesday, June 2, 2010 the White Pine Family Medicine will be at Tri County High School to offer sports physicals for our TC athletes. Physicals will be given from 2:30 - 6:30 p.m. The cost is $20.

During the months of January and February, Mrs. Bergman’s fifth grade social studies classes were studying the West Indies and western exploration. After the earthquake in Haiti, the class shifted their studies to learning more about Haiti and its problems. The classes decided to become active and raise money to help out this island nation in crisis. After brainstorming, the classes decided to sponsor bake sales, popcorn, and hot chocolate sales at Edgerton on Thursdays and Fridays. They named the project, “Hope for Haiti.” Students helped by donating baked items, cups, hot chocolate mix, and popcorn. Mrs. Bergman organized each class into teams that worked on advertising, donations, sale day operations, and other promotions. Hot chocolate was offered at parent-teacher conferences. There was also a canister in the office that students used to drop off money for “Hope for Haiti.” The classes set a goal to raise $500 to give to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Haiti. On March 17, during an assembly, Mrs. Bergman was able to present a check for $615.92 to the American Red Cross of Grand Rapids. Ms. Jessy Niswonger, the American Red Cross representative, thanked Edgerton students and explained that the money will be used for medical supplies and medicines needed in Haiti. This service project was a great success thanks to the donations and hard work of the fifth grade students. It helped the students realize that a little effort by individuals within a large group makes a big task successful. The students want to offer a special thank you to everyone in the community for supporting Edgerton’s Hope for Haiti project.

President: Bob Cichewicz Vice President: Mike Bergman Secretary: Janet Powell Treasurer: Brian Corwin Trustee: Chad Dailey Trustee: Jill Fennessy Trustee: Tim Grant down. In 1955, the school became over crowded and one grade had to have classes at the American Legion building. This practice was necessary until the MacNaughton Elementary Building was completed in 1957. Fall of 1962, Sand Lake High School students merged with Howard City High School students at the Edgerton building. Seventh and eighth graders from Howard City attended Sand Lake High School. In September of 1962, The Howard City Record reported 951 students and 33 teachers at Tri County Area Schools. Herbert Peck was Superintendent and Don Wilson was principal of all Tri County Area Schools. The Last class to graduate as "Howard City High School" was the class of 1962. There were 46 graduates. The Class of 1963 was the first to graduate as the new Tri County Area Schools. There were 55 graduates. In 1965, grades ninth through twelfth moved into the new high school on Kendaville Road (the current middle school). Grades fifth through the eighth and the Pierson’s fourth grade moved to the Edgerton building (currently Edgerton Upper Elementary). It was decided by the board of education to close Sand Lake High School and Pierson School. In 1993, the new high school was built behind existing high school. Middle school students left Edgerton to move into old high school on Kendaville Road. Fall of 1993 to the spring of 1998, Edgerton building was used for adult education, Young 5’s, Alternative Education, and childcare. In August of 1998, fourth and fifth graders from MacNaughton Elementary along with fifth graders from Sand Lake Elementary moved into Edgerton building because of high student population. The school was renamed Edgerton Upper Elementary. For more Tri County School History, go to Tricountyschools. com and click on District History. The National Honor Society (NHS) Cancer Walk will take place from 6 p.m. on Friday, April 30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday May 1. Many walkers and volunteers are needed. You do not have to volunteer for the entire 24 hours, a few hours would be great. If you have any questions or want to volunteer, please contact Brittany Decker via e-mail at brttnyalyssa@hotmail.com. The last school board meeting was held on March 8th. The following are the action items that were voted on. ACTION ITEM #1 – Middle School Booster Organization. Motion by Grant, second by Powell to approve the organization of a middle school booster organization per the approved bylaws presented. Motion CARRIED (6-0-1). ACTION ITEM #2 – Easement Request. Motion by Grant, second by Dailey to approve the easement request as presented from the Village of Howard City. Motion CARRIED (6-0-1). ACTION ITEM #3 – Roof Repair Bid Request. Motion by Grant, second by Fennessy to seek bids for the Middle School roof repair. Motion CARRIED (6-0-1). The next school board meeting will be held on April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Administration building next to Sand Lake Elementary. In the fall of 1962, the student body from Howard City Schools and Sand Lake Schools merged together to become Tri County Schools. The first class to graduate from the newly formed school was the class of 1963. During the merge, the ninth through twelfth graders from both schools attended Howard City High School (currently Edgerton Upper Elementary). The seventh and eighth graders attended Sand Lake High School. The elementaries remained the same.

In 1871, the community voted to build a new schoolhouse in Howard City. Mrs. George Barber was the teacher. By 1883 an addition was added to accommodate the growing student body. In February of 1885, the school burned down. Churches and the Band Hall were used as school rooms until a new building was erected on Edgerton Street (on present Edgerton Upper Elementary location). This building housed grades K-12 and was called Howard City High School. In 1934, the gymnasium was built. Today it serves as a cafeteria and gymnasium. In 1936, a new building was built in front of the 1885 school building while students were attending school. It is the present Pictured is the Howard City High School built in 1885. The picture was taken Edgerton Upper Elementary building. When school let out for in 1912 and the building stood behind the present Edgerton Upper Elementary 1937-summer break, the old building (pictured at right) was torn building.

Lots of us do not know what this means. A few years ago I had some patients that worked for a company that required them to work 12 hour days, seven days per week. Some of their employees began to experience fatigue related problems, many had mental and emotional problems, and lots had social and marital difficulties. The rate of accidents and injuries was higher than average. Humans are designed to need recuperation time. Sleep depravation studies have all shown dramatic reduction in human performance when we do not get enough rest. During rest and sleep, many of the body’s processes are shut down. The chemicals that we used up during the day are replenished. We have all heard that we need eight hours of sleep per day. I think that varies quite a bit from person to person. Some need 10 and some can get by with 6 hours. And I do not think that all needs to be at the same time. I have a patient who writes books. He goes to bed at 9 pm and gets up at 1 am. He then writes for four hours and returns to bed at 5 am for 3 hours more sleep. This works very well for him and he does not experience any tiredness or fatigue during the day time. If, for some reason you do not get enough sleep at night, you can augment your sleep with power naps, or cat naps. This kind of nap should be limited to 15 minutes or less. The reason is that more alpha brain waves are produced in the first stages of sleep. If you sleep longer, you will awaken from a deeper stage of sleep and will feel more fatigued than rested. Many of our religious traditions teach us to rest on the Sabbath. That is a day for spiritual reflection and rejuvenation, but it is also important to spend that time resting and recharging our physical body as well. That does not mean do absolutely nothing, it means, rest and recreation. Recreate or rebuild yourself, physically and spiritually. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
