Origins of this presentation

Recharge the Idiom

Most people that watch H-I-M
enough times notice that there
are lots of mass (or custom
produced) items that have
never ever been shown.

H-I-M is in need of a slight
recharge of its idiom. The
changes are not huge, but
without change H-I-M will not
last.

This document was started with
only Iodine, Sulphur and high
power HF transmitters in mind.

Hundreds of products vital to
the functioning of the modern
world have not been shown!

More and more items kept
coming up, so there is this....

Fill the gaps!
AND : Have more narrators.

The Discovery Networks (in the US) –
if it is not careful -- will end up on the
“Ash Heap of History” due to the
ongoing global economic crisis.
There are too many TV networks in the
English speaking world, and those that
don't actually help their viewers (in any
way) will cease to exist.
Households are dumping Pay TV as a
service, as there is no spare money in
the economic system for it to exist.
Pay TV nets in North America have
economic models based on pure
fantasy – and “perpetual neverending
copyright” is no help to the system.

Origins of this presentation
Most people that watch H-I-M enough times
notice that there are lots of mass (and / or)
“custom produced” items that have never ever
been shown.
Showing how things are made is an old idiom,
dating to the 1920s. The idiom from the 1940s
to 1960s was everywhere.
In the US this TV idiom was practically
outlawed after 1980. The China Trade
seemed to make it so … and the NFB shorts
were about the only way it could ever come
back. This idiom now has to survive a global
economic crisis, and peak resources.

Update the Idiom
Narration is important. Having the
same narrator all the time can lead
a viewer to ignore the program
entirely.
Canada has scores of people skilled
in narration [& in show biz] (& in the
Industrial production of goods) >>>
ALL must do comedy! Drama
people are not a perfect fit...
Keep your current narrators for
about 2/3rds of each episode … but
have each guest do 2 full episodes.

Recharge the Idiom

Update the Idiom

H-I-M is in need of a slight
recharge of its idiom.

Narration is important, but having the same
narrator (or a small set of them) can lead a viewer
to ignore the program entirely.

The changes should not be
huge, but without change H-I-M
will not last.

Canada has at least dozens of people skilled in
product narration actively in show biz (or
Industrially producing goods).

Hundreds of products vital to
the functioning of the modern
world have not been shown.
Fill the gaps : entire sectors
have been totally ignored!

Keep your current narrators for about 2/3rds of
each episode …but have a random drop in
person.
Have each guest narrator do 2 full episodes of
narration. Keep the best 3 segments. Put the best
one out. Remainders should be “WEB XTRAS” …
Hulu, YouTube etc fodder.

Sun and Star Sensors for Spacecraft
Spacecraft navigation systems still need Sun and
Star Sensors to be able to know the spacecraft's
orientation.
Without this basic “dead reckoning” navigation
mechanism, most craft would be lost.
Ball Aerospace (known best for its Jam Jars &

than 30 Ball Aerospace star trackers in operation.

Vanillin made from Wood Pulp & Guaiacol
The demand for vanilla flavoring has always outweighed the possible
supply. The target markets are the ice-cream and chocolate industries,
making up almost 75% of the market.
Smaller industries include confections, baked goods, perfume, medicines
and cleaning products.
In 2001, the annual demand or vanillin was 12,000 tons, but only 1800
tons of natural vanillin was produced. The remaining vanillin was
chemically synthesized vanillin
Although the chemical structure of synthetically produced vanillin and
naturally-occurring vanillin are identical, it’s just a cheap alternative for
the real thing.
Today, a small amount of synthetic vanillin is made from with lignin
wastes, a by-product of the paper/wood pulp industries.
However, most of the synthetic vanillin is made from guaiacol, which is a
petrochemical precursor.

Diesel engines were used in airships and were

Diesel’s main advantages are excellent fuel
consumption because of Diesel's higher energy

keep the fuel from gelling at low temperatures.

Boxer “Flat” Engines
(motorcar, motorcycle and aircraft types)
A flat engine is an internal combustion engine with
horizontally-opposed pistons.
Typically, the layout has cylinders arranged in two banks on
either side of a single crankshaft and is otherwise known as
the boxer, or horizontally-opposed engine.
The concept was patented in 1896 by engineer Karl Benz,
who called it the "contra engine."
A boxer engine should not be confused with the opposedpiston engine, in which each cylinder has two pistons but no
cylinder head. Also, if a straight engine is canted 90 degrees
into the horizontal plane, it may be thought of as a "flat
engine", but this usage is not common.
True boxers have each crankpin controlling only one
piston/cylinder while the 180° engines, which superficially
appear very similar, share crankpins.

NAPEIR DELTIC DIESEL ENGINE
(and Compound Deltics)

Simple Deltic engines were possibly first used by a
German saloon sedan after 1933 with Gasoline.
Diesel designs were designed for the UK Admiralty
after 1948, but adopted by English Electric for
Diesel Locomotives (c 1956).
Deltics have massive Torque vs Weight Ratio, a
typical 3 Tonne 18 cylinder @ 3300 HP.
DELTICs Ram pistons together to obtain Diesel
ignition and this saves tons of engine block weight.

Iodine Production (Seaweed)
Iodine was discovered in
Seaweed. The U Montreal
Chemistry Department can do
this process, or maybe the
University in Halifax NS.

Ribbon seaweeds contain
iodine compounds which can
be obtained by extracting
Iodide ions from seawater.

Iodine can be extracted from the
seaweed by heating it in air to an ash,
in which the iodine is present as
iodide.
The iodide is dissolved out of the
residue by boiling water, the solution
filtered and the iodide oxidised to
iodine using hydrogen peroxide.
The iodine colours the solution brown
at this stage. Isolating the iodine from
this solution can be done by solvent
extraction, followed by evaporation of
the solvent.
