The American system of school education differs from the system in some countries.
Todays students are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are
demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high
school, in the US the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), or the Common Core
These standards establish guidelines for what every student should know and be able to
do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade. Today, 42
states and the District of Columbia have voluntarily adopted and are working to
implement these standards. English language arts and math were the subjects chosen for
the Common Core State Standards because they are areas upon which students build
skills that are used in other subjects. Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and
use language effectively in a variety of content areas, so the standards specify the literacy
skills and understandings required for college and career readiness. Common Core for
English Language Arts (ELA) and Literacy reflect the skills and knowledge students will
need to succeed in college, career, and life. An integrated model of literacy. For
conceptual clarity, the Core Standards are divided into Reading, Writing, Speaking and
Listening, and Language strands. But the processes of communication are closely
connected, and the Standards present an integrated model of literacy. For example,
Writing standard 9 requires that students be able to write about what they read etc.
Research and media skills are blended into the Standards as a whole rather than treated in
a separate section. The Standards for Speaking and Listening. The Standards define the
range and content of student speaking and listening. A special emphasis is made on the
two sets of skills: 1) Comprehension and Collaboration; and 2) Presentation of
Knowledge and Ideas. Being productive members of these conversations requires that
students contribute accurate, relevant information; respond to and develop what others
have said; make comparisons and contrasts; and analyze and synthesize a multitude of
ideas in various domains. They should make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual,
graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance
understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. The Collegiate
