We worked in close cooperation with representatives from the maritime industry throughout the
development of the curriculum and the target competencies. As such, graduates from the programme
meet all the demands from industry and can act
as highly-competent future technical managers,
surveyors and developers. Graduates will have a
choice of high-level job opportunities, both nationally and internationally in:
Shipping and ship management
Port operation
Shipbuilding, repair and conversion
Classification societies
Maritime education and training
Maritime technical service
Marine offshore operations and services
Maritime authorities
Marine finance and insurance
Particular high demand can be expected from the
Indonesian and Asian shipbuilding and supply industry, from shipping companies and from the offshore industry. Most graduates find employment
in the technical management of these companies.
Employment opportunities are also to be expected
from European maritime companies, in particular
classification societies, shipping companies, and
maritime supplies and service companies with
branches in Asia.
Upon successful completion of the degree,
graduates can continue studying for a Masters in
Operation and Management of Maritime Systems
in Rostock-Warnemnde, Germany.

Future challenges for efficient, safe, and environmentally-friendly shipping will require a smart combination of competencies for ship building and ship
operation. This bachelors programme implements
an innovative approach based on the high standards
of German engineering science.
The bachelors program is focused on the growing
demand for marine engineers in Indonesia, Asia and
around the world. It was designed by Wismar University and ITS Surabaya, both of which have a superb
international reputation and the highest standards
in higher maritime education.
By combining the strengths of both, the universities
have created a new outstanding programme for fu
ture marine engineers. The partners use the Polimarin Semarang, the former Semarang Growth Centre,
a leading maritime education and training centre
in Southeast Asia built in cooperation between the
German and Indonesian governments. The entire
study programme is held at ITS Surabaya with the
support of four professors from Wismar University
and several guest lecturers from the international
maritime industry.
The main benefits of the programme include:
An excellent study programme in Indonesia
followed by global employment opportunities,
The development of outstanding competencies
and a high educational standard of marine
engineering,
Alignment to the needs of industry and
preparation for postgraduate studies.

The Bachelor Program offers a unique combination

of competencies in shipbuilding, ship operation
and ship maintenance technologies.
The first two semesters provide a well-founded
education in natural sciences and the English
language. Subsequently, the special curriculum
in semesters 3 to 7 will develop key competencies
from maritime technical management such as:
Technical ship operational management
Ship maintenance management
Marine surveying
Marine safety and environmental management,
Naval architecture for marine engineers,
Basic engine room design.
The programme has a particular focus on the
systematic understanding of maritime-technical
systems, including their function, construction,
operation and maintenance. Practical experience
in these areas is developed through extensive
laboratory work and simulator exercises.
A well-defined set of specialised elective courses
is offered in semesters 5 to 7, preparing for particular subjects of contemporary marine engineering
practice as well as an understanding of Germanys
culture and language.
Students write their bachelors thesis in semester
7 and defend it in a colloquium public to both
contributing universities.
