Analysis

In the first part of the experiment our group had depleted all the fish in the
lake by the first year and where not able to continue with the second year. In
order to survive with the $20 dollar set minimum most people had to take
many more fish than just one or two, while others took the most expensive
fish for themselves leaving almost no good fish for others. By the last person,
all the fish had died and were not able to reproduce. During our second
experiment we as a group conversed and decided to equally share the fish by
making the bear minimum to survive the year while leaving enough fish in
the lake to reproduce for the next year. This was very complicated and time
consuming, nor was it at all beneficiary for the capitalist pig inside all of us.
Eventually by year 2, most people went back to their selfish ways of taking
the most valuable fish first.
1. (Answered above)
a. The common resource depleted to essentially none by the first year in part
A because everyone was in it for themselves with a win vs. lose attitude,
instead of cooperatively fishing and regulating catch.
b. We did get different results in part 2 because, we eventually talked it out
and were able to all survive by compromises and regulations which led to
more fish reproduction for future years.
c. Cooperation led to compromises and fair profits that allowed all of us to
survive.
2. The green fish went out first because it is the most profitable and thus
most wanted fish, this relates in real life, because like elephants, they are
demanded of for their ivory. Recently their population has simply dropped so
much that the demand outstrips the supply and is beginning to threaten the
continuity of elephants in the wild. The fact that there are less elephants also
slows their ability to reproduce and regain in numbers.
3. Parking lots are a big example of how competition leads to many raging
hours waiting for a spot to open up. Everyone wants something and their
putting all their resources and time into getting it at any costs, even if it
means harming the environment for short gains.
a. Because its open to the public any one can come in and exploit it, and
they can do so any way they so please to do so, even if it means excessive
use or exploitation.
4. Air, water, solar energy, wind, trees, and rocks.
a. These are being used wisely, however they are not being used in a large
enough quantity to be efficient. They are used wisely because they indeed
work to benefit the world and make it a more sustainable society.

b. Use them in larger quantities as well as using them correctly as intended

will maximize efficiency and thus be a wise alternative to non-reusable
alternatives.
5. Some strategies to prevent the tragedy include privatization or private
ownership and or public or government ownership. (From PowerPoint notes in
class)

Conclusion
In the first part, the result was that our entire lake was ridden of fish by the
first year and all the players didnt have enough fish for the next year.
However in part 2 we had cooperated and managed to negotiate who gets
what fish without drastically reducing the fish population, allowing it to
regrow next year. Essentially we learned that to save the environment its not
simply a one mans job but rather a corporative one that stresses win vs. win
instead of win vs. lose. Human societies tend not to give a second thought
upon their environment and its consequences on other life on earth,
essentially a planetary world view, but to really help the planet we were able
to cooperate into a rather more steward like view where we knew fishing
would affect the environment but we still did it but just with consideration
and moderation. Deforestation is another example of overuse that can be
prevented with cooperation. To not deforest all the trees of an area but rather
spread it out across all areas. The trategy of the commons is very impractical
because if a common is just so large, people would either get annoyed or
rebels would break the system sooner or later. Large scale communication
can get very difficult to control and maintain especially when youre in a
business where everyone wants to make more money than the other guy
right next to him.
