Echo control in EWSD

1. Source of Echo
1.1 Acoustical Echo
The acoustical echo is caused by poor isolation between the microphone and the
speaker of some telephone sets. Normal this kind of echo is cancelled by the telephone
set itself.
1.2 Electrical Echo
The echo occurs in a telephone network primarily because of impedance mismatches at
hybrid (2-wire local loop to 4-wire trunk). Because the hybrid cannot be made to split the
2-wire loop perfectly, a part of signal, that is transmitted in sending direction, will be
reflected back at the far end to the originating side. Therefore, the originator hears his
voice delayed.

Whether a caller hears his echo is dependent on the delay present in the network. A
delay time less than 16ms is usually not noticeable. Most callers will hear echo of their
own voice in case of 25/30ms round-trip delay. If the delay increases, the quality of
transmission becomes worse and the usage of echo control equipment is necessary
(round-trip delay: 50ms).
