The program included a

The program ended at 7:30 p.m.
Several non-Christians, who were
present, seemed to be quite im

My friend, Miss Vanpoecke, the exprincipal of the School-with-theBible, has offered to help head up a
group of "correspondents" as they

this project.

THE LETTER

DID YOU KNOW WE ALL have a ministry

of reconciliation to perform as part of Christ's
body? Sure you did, but probably like we
sometimes "discovered" old truths once agam,
you too have seen new light and beauty in
passages often read before in Scripture.

While getting ready for a Billy Graham campaign,

'Soontuns 9ajnily

part of the international ministry of Mission

World held this spring in Europe, a particular

text emphasizing this truth look on new meaning
and life. That passage is found in the letter

75
560C

om:

of Paul called II Corinthians 5:11-21:

SiDce, (hen, we know wba( it is (o fear ttie Lord, we try (o permiade men. What we are
is plain to God, and I hope it is also plaii to your conscience. We are not trying to
commend ourselves (o you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us,
HO that you can answer (hose who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the
heart. If we are out of our mind, it is for Ihe sake of God; if we are in our right mind,

it is for you. For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all,
and therefore ail died. And he dies for all that those who live should no longer live for

(hcmselvee but for him who died for tbem und raised again.
So from DOW on we regard no one from a woridly point of view. Though we once
regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is
a new creation; Ihe old has gone, the new has comel Ail this is from God, who reconciled
us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that God was
reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he

has committed to use the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's

ambassadors, as though God were makitif, his appeal through us. We implore you oo
Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so
that in him we might become the righteousuess of God.

If we can understand what Paul is saying in vs. 20, it would seem this reconciliation isn't just
between God and those outside Christ, but also His children, "the church of God," and all the

Saints (II Cor. 1:Ib) arc implored upon to be reconciled to God. Is this not an awesome task
and privilege that we must be continually engaged in and encouraging one another not to grow
tired of fulfilling? We hope God has given you strength and wisdom to this end in your part
of the world these first months of 1993 and thank you for your continued and ever so
important part in helping us fulfill this in the country of Belgium thus far. God bless you as
you remain faithful...in the ministry of reconciliation in the states...and with us in
Belgium...towards the world and towards Christians.

IN HENKI'S EFFORTS OF REACHING drug addicts and helping them understand God's

plan of reconciliation there has been advancement and he has been involved in various ways.
He has gotten a telephone (number 089 305703) in his basement workshop/office and a
doorbell hooked up so he is more accessible! It has made family communication better as
well as making him more accessible for those needing him for "talk therapy" and other
services he is able to offer addicts and other friends and contacts.

He has been able to convince three diflerent addicts to be admitted in the hospital to get off
drugs. ONE left before the cure was ended, but has since decided to try and go straight at
home, claiming to be off two weeks. Henki says she mdeed looks belter, so join us in praying
that she may be successful. The SECOND succeeded so well he was discharged early and
Henki continues to encourage him to stay clean. This is the "Piedro" that was mentioned in
the Jan-Feb report that we discovered is PIETRO from his letter. After 43 days he wrote
saying he was very thankful to God that his condition was improving and getting better every
day. He said he hopes that 1993 will change liis life for the rest of his life and that he wants
to fight to the bitter end until drugs and alcohol are totally eliminated from his life. Isn't that
great news~and something we can be specifically praying will be granted him and his
family?!? Henki was able to take him one night to hear Billy Graham (via satellite from
Essen, Gennany) so now the follow-up must be effective. The THIRD was in and out of the
hospital two or three limes and was sure God had worked a miracle that she had been
accepted back so quickly after leaving. Unfortunately, she is now out again, but is trying to
stay clean in the home of a friend. We can't give up too soon on these folks, always lifting
them before the throne of mercy and encouraging, motivating, loving them towards victory
in Jesus.

Henki has been able to rent a garage close to his office where he has sleeping facilities for
dire cases. Especially during the winter montlis it is awful to realize that some of these folks
sleep outside without any shelter with freezing temperatures and rainy nights. Henki knows
the danger of temptation where valuable items are available so has this sparsely furnished
facility that can be used in emergencies in order not to bring them into our home. Help
towards this expense and the additional phone would be most appreciated if God lays it on
your heart to give.
He has gotten addresses and made more new contacts, visiting and gathering with different
addicts than he had met in the shopping centers. They each have their own personal needs
and problems and Henki tries to teach them, encouraging them with love, practical advice,
and spiritually sound direction.
He has received a book from the Teen Challenge International that is beginning a ministry in
the province of Limburg, Belgium. He is reading the book trying to get new insights and
information on how best to reach these folks and understand their situation better.

Since it

is a new ministry in Belgium (off-shoot of work established in the Netherlands) it still needs
to be built up. Thus far it is mainly a preventative ministry trying to reach schools and
institutions with teenagers to warn of the dangers of drug addiction. It is hoped eventually
to develop a cure center, D.V. It is certainly something we are seeing is needed more and
more in this part of Belgium at least, so hope you make it a matter of earnest prayeror send
someone who would be capable!!!

He is also discovering that it is not just te<;nagers and young people who are involved in
addiction. Many arc in their thirties and above, "just on drugs" 5-6 years. This lifestyle
causes the family such desperation what with all the bills, expenses and the embarrassment
of having children sit out prison sentences that suicide is often considered the only way out.
These folks have insecure lives since they can't keep a job, often going bankrupt, losing
home, car, and other possessions because of high expenses. They lose friends almost as fast
as they gain them bccause of their deceitfulness, lies, and other distasteful actions. They
develop ways of collecting money; for example begging from friends by asking for enough
money for a cup of coffee, and saving it until they have enough for a fix! Almost all of them
have had tragic and painful childhoods that have contributed heavily to their addiction. They
arc indeed a group of people who need true love and compassion that only can be given by
God and those empowered with His love. It is as though God is making the appeal through
us that you open your heats to us and this ministry of reconciliation that we may see some of
these become new creations in Christ so the old will be gone and the new will come.
THERE ARE A COUPLE OTHER LETTERS we would like to share with you at this time.
We finally had news from Robert, one of the refugees of Ghana that had lived with us while
we were in Opglabeck. He has been able to get papers to live and work in Italy. Not
everything is an ideal situation, but he is praising God for His care and providence and hopes
to save up and visit us sometime.
As most of you know, our oldest son, John Mark is attending Bible College in the states. He
had been able to visit several of our supporting congregations last summer before classcs
began with a slide report of the work here. He also has had the opportunity to share that
report with the student body of Lincoln Christian College. He put some of his newly learned
lessons from speech class to use and challenged them to write letters of encouragement to us.
What a joy it was to receive just such a letter. We don't know how to emphasize the
importance of not only having sufficient financial support, but faithful prayer warriors and
encouragers who stand behind us in the often discouraging, lonesome, and hard work which
makes many demands on us physically, spiritually, and mentally. We appreciate John Mark
and Stacy's effort. We also want to take this opportunity to thank each one who remembered
us with Christmas greetings and birthday cards, and other encouragement.
Last, but not least, was a letter from William and Jean Roland (Mary Esther's folks in the
states on furlough from India). They reminded us of their coming 50th wedding anniversary
this summer. Though we have none of the details yet, we plan on being in the states for
several weeks, to take in this celebration and visit some of our supporters. Please be
preparing for this and help us arrange a visit with you if at all possible. We are anxious to
see as many as possible face-to-face.
MISSIONARY WORK TAKES ON DIFFERENT FACES

Besides the many hours Henki spends reaching out into the world of darkness among drug
addicts, the Boonaerts' family found themselves occupied in many other activities. With the
following pictures we will give a summary of what happened in Belgium for Christ in 1992.

THE GENK CHRISTIANS: The Genk Church

that Boonaerts attend was built in the fifties

and the adjoining "parsonage" begun the end

of the sixties so there has been some

renovation and redecorating of late. Henki,

Mary Esther, and James stand on the
entrance steps in front of the church, one
of the most recent finishing touches which
was added in 1992
SHARING WITH ROLANDS AND

INDIAN CHRISTIANS: Enjoying a typical

South Indian meal with Mom and Dad

Roland along with one of the teachers

(and his wife) and a 1992 graduating
student of the Madras College
of Evangelism. We also shared in
several Bible studies, church

gatherings, and the graduation ceremony

while in Madras in April.

with one of the Leprosy Hospital
workers while visiting other parts
of India. It was encouraging to
see several changes and advancements
at (he hospital where the Rolands
worked over a year. Mary Esther
had the privilege of bringing a
devotional thought for the monthly
staff meeting.

SEPARATION FROM JOHN MARK AND CHARITABLE EFFORTS: Having John Mark

go to the states in May meant preparation, separation, and upkeep of his place. He left his
Daihatsu Charade so James and Mary Esther have transportation. This has been a double
blessing since Henki's car was stolen in December. James checked the oil before a trip to
Eindhoven, Holland to bring a load of clothing and supplies. Different church joined together
to help Christians in need in former East block lands and Genk Christians were part of the
efforts.

ENCOURAGING OTHER
CONGREGATIONS: The Unaken

church holding an immersion

in the Rekem building
because they do not have a
baptistery. Immersing is
Pascal, one of Boonaerts

converts of the eighties.

Cindy is the name of the
teen who is being immersed.
Cindy is one of the teenagers
who attend the youth weekends
and whose folks were converted

in the eighties.

YOUTH WORK: Some of the teenagers in the Genk building at the all church potluck dinner
held during the November 1992 Youth Weekend. There are several non-Christian youth so
these continue to be good opportunity to witness and train youth. We also try to have an
influence on those involved in the small music ^roup that meets at the church.

i'.

COMPUTER EDUCATION: Learning to use the recently purchased second-hand computer

in our Genk home. Since James has had classes at school, he's able to instruct the "greenies"
and figure out how to use the printer, and etc. Mary Esther has been so busy at the School
with the Bible so hasn't yet started using it regularly, but we expect that to change soon.

FELLOWSHIP WITH AMERICAN CHRISTIANS: Visiting in Ma Boonaerts Uving room

with Marty and Jay of the Maryvale Christian Church (Arizona). It was an unusualexperience
for us ail around and we were sorry it had to end so quickly. It's always a blessing to have
American Christians visit us. The Vermeulens of Iowa were among our other visitors.

THANKSGIVING was spent with English speaking American and Canadian missionaries of
Belgium and Holland. One family had recently adopted (the baby pictured) and folks enjoyed
seeing his pictures. Two families will be leaving the European ranks the summer of 1993 so
the need for spiritual harvesters continues to grow in this continent.

WELCOMING EX-CO LABORERS: A large group of friends and Christians welcomed the
Dennis and Linda Mcssimer family from South Africa with us in December. They had spent
many years in Belgium as missionaries before having to leave for Johannesburg
for health reasons. They were on their way to the states for their "first furlough."

DENNIS MESSIMER had the

special joy of ending the

year and crowning his visit
in Belgium by immersing Luud
Stevens in the Genk church.

His wife Elly had been led

to Christ by Boonaerts'
converts while they were on
furlough in 1980. Messimer's
had stayed involved with Luud
and Elly's family, but he had
never made a decision to follow
Christ.

God continued to work

on his heart during the Messimer's

absence. This caused a time of

rejoicing for all present at the

"reception" for the Messimer's
while they were in the province
of Limburg. What a way to bring
the year to a close!

INTRODUCING
OUR PROMOTION AGENTS

In our

travels in the States this summer,

we discovered that this ministry of

Henki's has a title and people are
hired to do what he is doing.
It
had even been an observation of one

social worker in Belgium that Henki

was not a "missionary", so therefore
he shouldn't go out to the streets
convincing addicts to be admitted
-for detoxication.

One of the highlights this

summer was a visit with Jerry and
Barbara Mueller. They have been
longtime friends and acquaintances
of our family since Mary Esther was
a

mish-kid in India.

The Muellers

served in England continuing Fred

Miller's mission efforts there and

are presently serving with the Mowrystown Church of Christ in Ohio.

Though John Mark will be in

the States continuing his studies at
Lincoln, he will not be able to
visit among congregations on our
behalf.

The Muellers have o-Ffered

their time and expertise in helping

in this area by visiting churches
within reasonable driving distance
from their home.
They can be
reached at P.O. Box 29, Mowrystown,
Ohio 45155 or by phone 513-442-3461.
We hope to prepare an all new slide
show on the drug ministry sometime
a-fter the new year to have available
for their use.

At this time, we also want to

remind you when sending checks -for
the ministry, to make them payable

line.

All checks should be mailed

Please include
a note indicating that the check is

lERE IS A SPECIAL LETTER Henki always carries

/around with him. This official letter was provided by

a "Rijkswachter," one form of the security forces in

Belgium.

When Roger found out about Henki's intervention

work among addicts, he realized Henki could be endangered

with addicts in his car.

If he were stopped he could be

imprisoned and his car confiscated if drugs of any form were

found in his car or on the addicts he brought to the cen
ter. The letter outlines Henki's work of transporting ad

dicts to detox centers and that he has made his activities

known to city authorities.

One time while driving with a replacement car while ours

was being repaired last month, the police upon seeing this
letter said, "0, you're the man of the Charade," and let
Henki go with no further delay.

That was three states

How the letter was useful some dayslater is truly a

^working of God's hand.

HENKI AND A YOUNG MAN who'd been with Els the night of her

overdose, went to visit Pino in jail. Henki not being a

chaplin, nor having other necessary papers to visit con

victs wondered how he would be able to visit Pino. Upon

arriving he showed the letter and immediately he was

ushered in along with the accompanying addict. Orders
were given to provide a place for Henki "not behind glass"
but in the chapel. The three were able, unhindered or
with police accompanyment, to talk for almost two hours.
This was a great source of encouragement to Pino and Henki
excitedly told of the experience, showing praise for God's
open doors.

Pinois now out of jail and has gone with Henki to Els' last
resting place.

Many of the addicts asked Henki about at

tending Els funeral. Her parents choose however only to

have a private one with the family and her remains cremated.
Henki continues to have contact with them and they are
feeling guilt for some of their actions. We surely pray
God's word planted and watered in their hearts may bring
forth fruits as well.

This has also been an opportunity to continue teaching

Pino Scriptural truths.

He is sure "this isn't the end"

with Els and Henki is able to build upon other truths

previously taught Pino. While he was still in jail another
inmate to whom Henki had given the equivalent of "Good News

for Modern Man" in Dutch, begun reading. He shared the ex

citing things he found therein with Pino and other addicts
of Genk. You see what a chain reaction is in porcess as
Henki reaches one then another with the gospel.
PINO WAS PROUD TO SHOW Henki that he's not begun using
drugs since being out of jail. Henki also reports Pino
looks so strong and healthy compared to about this time
last year when he first began working intensly with Pino
and Els. Pray with us that he and others may truly be

Some news of the Genk church of Christ where we attend mostly is also in
order.

The YOUNG PEOPLE CONTINUE THEIR MUSIC PRACTICE

in the attic

space above the worship hall.

The congregation has decided to help
towards some more renovations since they see the youth are serious about
continuing to use the area.
(The young poeple have done lots of in
sulating as well as practicing!) Now the church plans to provide heat by
hooking some radiators onto the central heating.
They also hope to re
place a ladder with stairs for access to the room.
This should be a boost
to our teenagers.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDIES from the Navigator series have been pretty well
attended for the most part.
Occasionally with sickness or during busy
summer months, they were postponed.
Otherwise good discussions and new
insights are being learned from God's word.
Plans are to learn new songs
as soon as the musician can learn some of the "Praise" songs that have
been translated into Dutch to teach the Christians.
This should be a good
experience for all involved.

DEATH IS ALWAYS A PART OF LIFE and the congregation had it's share this
year.
Shortly before our furlough two folks of the church left this life.
One had been very faithful until death.
We greatly miss the quiet, gentle
spirit of Finneke.
The other, Pol Wijman had been instrumental in Finneke
being won to Christ.
Henki has been able to make contact with some of his
^n-Christian family via his drug addict work.
Then there were 3 deaths the beginning of October that affected the Genk

congregation.

Josien's mother (Henki's youngest brother's wife) died

after a long struggle with cancer at the age of 55.

Then, without being
informed of her deteriation or death, Clothil was- also buried.
She had
been taken to her hometown area by her children about a year ago and put
in a nursing home. Ladies of the church had visited her in the course of
the year and could tell she wasn't happy.
Her non-believing children
informed the congregation of nothing, so Clothil left this life in lonliness and dejection.
The way of the world is sometimes hard and selfish.

The third death was the stabbing of a young man at a birthday party.
was to have married into the family of one of the Genk elders.

He

This starke

reality of the criminal world also left the congregation a bit more pro
tective of their youth, and the young people maybe a bit more sober to
danger.

^ THE JOINT CHRISTMAS PROGRAM is to be in the Genk building this

year so plans are being made for this time of fellowship and
sharing.
Several congregations are to be invited so it will

The Billy Graham campaign this spring resulted in many accepting

Follow up work continues and

evangelistic work are encouraging.

parts of Belgium are enthusiastically planning to get even more involved,

including some young people on fire for the Lord.

A small inter-church group decided to stand behind Henki in his efforts
when they heard of and saw his work among the addicts.
They hope to be

involved themselves and enlist others with prayers, finances and other
help and suppport (used bedding, clothing, etc.). All these united ef
forts to spread and strengthen His kingdom in the small but strategic
land of Belgium are intended to bring ultimate glory to God, and we trust
Him who began a good work to bring it to completion!
FURLOUGH

TRIP

We were certainly blessed with our "furlough trip" to the States, this
summer.
Though we wern't all able to be together the whole time it was
a success.
We are still being able to enjoy it through the cassettes and

reading materials gathered along the way.

Recordings of some of the

sessions at the NACC; copies of materials from the Media center at Lincoln
Christian College, and books from various Bible book stores and friends

provide this "after-glow." Many happy memories, several pictures, gifts

and some correspondance remind us of time shared among American Christians.
Thanks to everyone who had a part in any way.

Our Roland family reunion and celebration of the 50th and 25th wedding
anniversaries of William and Jean Roland and Henki and Mary Esther res-- pectively was of course the high light. The- folks had prepared-materials
with family tree info, from both Roland and Rothermel sides for each

family. We enjoyed sharing childhood memories with several slides,

talking and Indian food.
Janette Oke (cited in a Day Brightner product
prepared by Focus on the Family) said something that seems to express
it so well: Our family is a unit that is not shared by everyone. It's
ours by design, by tradition, by growth. We love and protect it in our
own special way. Aren't these some things to remember and rejoice about
when family--both our physical and Christian family is seperated by
1/2 the globe?
DRUG

MINISTRY

During 1993 Henki's work among drug addicts has increased and taken on
more specific shape.

He has been able to motivate about 30 addicts to

be admitted for treatment.

Many of these have been in more than once,

some on their own initiative but most of them Henki has worked hours with

and brought personally to detox centers.

In October he had been able to rent a garage for those without a place

to sleep who were seriously working on entrance.

In fact he had slowly

built it up to the place he was bedding down 7 addicts each night after
feeding them their one sparce meal that day.

Several were on

waiting lists to be admitted for treatment and Henki was glad to be in

volved

in this

work

after

the

break

this

summer.

Then from the most unexpected corner, trouble arose. We'd always expected
danger from the pushers and dealers seeing their customers being re
moved.
Instead the police began agitation!
After a conference with a
police at the station, Henki thought the matter was solved.
The next day
all the mattresses and bedding were confiscated and the addicts informed
they could no longer sleep in that garage.
Henki is now awaiting a meeting with the chief of police, the mayor, a
social worker and a welfare man.
We know the last two are sympathetic

and quite impressed with what Henki has been able to do "single-handed"
and without the use of methodon-substitute drugs.
We know our God and
prayers on Henki's behalf have provided the strength and protection and
success

Henki

has

received until

now.

We

trust

i t will

continue

to

the

further amazement of the officials and glory of God so request you to

pray without ceasing.

With the situation as it is, along with still being without transportation
Henki's work among the addicts has reduced to talking with them and en
couraging them as best he can. Sometimes it seems pretty discouraging and
unfair so we have to wait on the Lord to work out all things for good in
His own time,

for we know He is in control!
