which users can configure services and protocols related to switch cluster will appear. Click a menu
item, the dialog box for the corresponding function will pop up. The configuration of switch cluster
includes: cluster management, neighbor discovery and topology discovery.
The cluster management function provided by Raisecom enables network administrator to manage
over multiple switches through the public network IP address of a manager switch. The manager
switch is a commander, while switches under its management are member devices. Generally, a
member device has no IP address and its management and maintenance are realized through the
manager device. A typical application is shown in Figure 2-7.

13

www.raisecom.com

User Manual

Figure 2-7 Cluster management

Cluster management mainly includes three protocols: Raisecom Neighbor Discover Protocol
(RNDP), Raisecom Topology Discover Protocol (RTDP) and Raisecom Cluster Management
Protocol (RCMP). RNDP is in charge of neighbor discovery and data collection, RTDP collects and
manages the topology information of the whole network, while RCMP completes configuration
operations on cluster members like adding, activating and deleting. Both RTDP and RCMP work at
VLAN 2. Hence, if a device that does not support Raisecoms cluster management function exists
between two devices with cluster management function, relevant configuration on VLAN 2 is needed
to have the communication of RTDP and RCMP unblocked. Different switches have different roles
in a cluster according to their status and functions. Users can specify the role of a switch through
configuration. The device roles in a cluster are commander device, member device and candidate
device.
Commander device: The commander device has a public network IP address. It provides the
management interface for all switches in the cluster. The commander device manages
member devices via command redirection. At first, users send management command to the
commander device via public network. If the commander device recognizes that the
command is sent to a member device for execution, it will redirect the command to the
member device. The commander device has the ability to detect neighbor information, collect
topology information of the whole network, manage the cluster, maintain the status of the
cluster and support various types of agent.
Member device: In general, a member device does not have an IP address. Users manage
member devices using the command redirection function of the commander device. A
member device has the ability to detect neighbor information, accept the management of the
commander device, execute the commands forwarded by agents, and report fault and log.
When a member device is activated, users can manage the device directly through network
14

management device or via Telnet from the commander device.

Candidate device: A candidate device is not a member of any cluster, however, it possesses
cluster function and is able to become a member device in a cluster.
A cluster must have a commander device. After the commander device has been specified, the
commander device will detect and confirm candidate devices via RNDP and RTDP.
A candidate device will become a member device after it is added to a cluster. A member device can
be managed via cluster management function only when it is activated. Users can either activate the
switch manually or activate it by configuring auto-activate function on the switch.

2.4 OAM protocol

Click [OAM] on the main menu of the main interface of the switch EMS, a drop-down menu from
which users can configure OAM relevant services and protocols will appear. Users can open up the
dialog box for an operation by clicking the corresponding item on the menu. The menu items
includes: OAM Table, OAM Peer Table, OAM Loopback Table, OAM Stats Table, OAM
Log Table, OAM Event Log Table, Remote Extend OAM Trap, Remote Invariable Info Table,
Remote Environment Table, Remote System Config Table, Remote Community Table,
Remote IP Subnet Table, Remote Port Table, Remote Port Stats Table, Remote Device SFP
Table, Remote Device Q-in-Q Table, Send Configure Frame Table, Remote Inside Loopback
Table, Remote Device VCT Table, Extend OAM Statistics Table, Extend OAM Status Table,
Extend OAM Notification Enable, Extend OAM Upgrade/Backup Table, and Extend OAM
Upgrade/Backup Status Table.
According to the factual need of carriers network, the management of network is generally
classified into three groups: Operation, Administration and Maintenance, known as OAM. Operation
completes the analysis, prediction, layout and configuration of the network and network service,
while Maintenance focuses on the testing and fault management of the network and network service.
ITU-T defines the OAM function as: 1) monitor the network performance, generate maintenance
information and valuate the stability of the network according to the above information; 2) detect
network fault periodically and generate maintenance information and alarm information; 3)
guarantee the proper operation of the network by transferring or switching to other entities and
bypassing the disabled entity; 4) send fault information to the commander entity.
ISCOM series switches realize the OAM function defined by IEEE 802.3ah and the Extend OAM
function defined by Raisecom. Take OAM Table as an example, the configuration process of the
function corresponding to the menu item is shown below.
Click [OAM\OAM Table] on the menu and an OAM Table dialog box will pop up. Select the
port whose parameters are to be modified in the dialog box and click <Modify>, a Modify dialog

be opened by clicking the corresponding menu item. The SNMP parameters include: SNMP Engine
ID, USM Statistics, USM User Table, SNMP Community, VACM Security to Group Table,
VACM Access Table, VACM View Tree Family, and SNMP Target Address Table.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely-applied network management protocol.
ISCOM series switch EMS realizes the management over ISCOM series switches via SNMP.
Access control is an important part of SNMP. We will introduce the access control configuration
function in the following section. At present, two access control models are commonly used.
Community-based access control
SNMP Agent brings forth the conception of community to protect itself and its managed MIB from
unauthorized accesses. In a community, the management station must use the name of the
community when executing get and set operations on all agents, otherwise the request will not
be accepted. When SNMP v1 and SNMP v2 adopt community name authentication, the SNMP
messages with community name that the device can not recognize will be discarded. The community
names are strings used to mark and differentiate different SNMP communities. SNMP community
can have Read-Only authority or Read-Write authority. Communities with Read-Only authority can
only query on device information, while those with Read-Write authority can not only query device
17

information but also configure the device.

Click [SNMP Parameters\SNMP Community] on the menu of the main interface of the switch
EMS, a SNMP Community dialog box will pop up. Select the community to be modified and
click <Modify>, a <Modify> dialog box will pop up (see Figure 2-12). Input the parameters to be
modified (for example: set the Community Name to read, set the View Name to internet and
set the AccessControl to ReadOnly), and click <Apply>, the configuration will be saved on to
the device.

Figure 2-12 SNMP community table

User-based access control

SNMP v3 adopts User-based Security Model (USM). USM brings forth the conception of group.
One or several users correspond to one access group. Every access group has its pre-defined read
view, write view and notify view. Users in the access group possess the read, write or notify authority
in the corresponding view. Users that send Get and Set requests must be a member of an access
group that possesses the corresponding authority, otherwise the requests will not be accepted.

The Remote Devices to be Upgraded or Backed Up adopts hyphen - to separate the number of
remote devices, the ifIndex of the local port the remote device connected to, and remote device ID list.
If the ifIndex of the local port is 0, the remote device ID will be the ifIndex value of the remote device
connected to them. If the ifIndix of the remote port is not 0, the remote device ID will be the ifIndex
of the remote device minus 100000. One table item in the remote device ID list corresponds to one
remote device. At most, 62 devices can be supported. For example, a RC551-GE is connected to the
port 27 of ISCOM2828F, then the item Remote Devices to be Upgraded or Backed Up should be
1-0-27 when upgrading/backing up the remote RC551-GE.
The data in the Extend OAM Upgrade/Backup Table will be deleted automatically after 5 seconds
from the completion of the upgrading and backing up operation.
