“LOVE ACTUALLY” COMES TO NORTHERN MAINE
IN SYRACUSE STAGE COMEDY
by: Bill West

John Cariani’s play, Almost, Maine, which has come to Syracuse Stage from the Geva Theatre
in Rochester, is a delight. Cariani has said in a program interview that with wrong direction and
inferior acting, his take on different aspect of love could become simply cute without us feeling any
of the pain. Fortunately for this production he has a fine director in Skip Greer and a team of four
excellent actors.
Because the play is in fact a series of fairly brief vignettes (similar to a series of short stories, a
genre which Cariani loves), the actors have to change character and moods very quickly, and, happy
to say, they are all well tuned to the different nuances which Cariani has cast upon his various
scenes set somewhere in Northern Maine where he grew up. This is not touristy coastal Maine
with its picturesque villages, lobsters and fishing boats. We are many, many miles from Boothbay
Harbor, Castine and Bath – in those parts of Maine which have a bleak continental climate, where
the fields sprout potatoes and where lumber and pulp mills, with their gaunt stonework, rise up
beside the river courses.
However, the long cold winters do reveal a vast sky-scape in a region sufficiently far north to
experience the famous Northern Lights during the long dark nights of winter. The play makes the
most of this magical element in the atmosphere
of Northern Maine. All the action takes place on
a very starry moonless night, and we are given
glimpses of the Lights as they cast their brilliant
atmospheric hue upon the various lovers as
they undergo the pangs of emotion. In this
respect, lighting designer, Kendall Smith, has
done a superb job of conveying the spirit both
of romance and pain via the lighting effects he
achieves, with a truly stunning upbeat finale.
The starry sky dominates, with a few conifer trees decorating the stage and

real love must prove itself by distance – will she really return from
around the world?
The British movie, Love Actually, was also a series of vignettes,
some linked to others, some charming, some quite painful – but all
providing a commentary on aspects of love, especially the romantic
kind, and dealing with rather urbane people from the middle and
upper class echelons of British society.
Cariani’s scenes have transported this idea to the region he
knows best from his childhood – a region often unsung, where folks
live relatively simple yet harsh lives in a difficult environment. Yet, as
we all are aware, love knows no boundaries, and, as the playwright
notes in the program book, “Almost Maine is a play about people
who are normally very grounded, but who have become very excited
by love...and other extraordinary occurrences.” Cariani’s gift, is that
in these brief scenes, through skilful dialogue and clever dramatic
devices, he makes these characters come alive for the short time they
are on stage. Add to that Greer’ sensitive directing and actors who
can deftly assume the various roles demanded of them, and you have
a little winner on your hands.
The play runs through April 11. Don’t miss it. Call the box office at

production there were many such moments when ‘staged mayhem’ was
superbly organized. Timing is of the essence at these moments, and
Moss clearly had worked hard with his aspiring young actors to create
believable characterizations and achieve seemingly effortless ensemble
agility.
Charlo Kirk’s Gordon Miller, the theatrical producer ultimately
responsible for everyone else’s dilemmas, took command from the start,
aided and abetted by his two ‘clever’ incompetents, Brad Koed’s Harry
Binion and Robbie Simpson’s Faker Englund, and Miller’s girl-friend
Lori Pasqualino’s Christine Marlowe, while Kerry Kamierowicz’s hotel
manager, Joseph Gribble, caught between his brother-in-law Miller’s
schemings and the irascibility of the owner Gregory Wagner, was
wonderful in his moments of distractedness and near insanity.
Meanwhile, Chris Dwan, as Leo Davis, the playwright of the show
Godspeed that Miller wants to produce at the hotel’s theatre, is reduced

between us and who-knows-how-many amazing talents: they

I wholeheartedly endorse this kind of viral movement of
music throughout the Internet.
So I was really disappointed to discover that I’d have to

explained it:
According to reports, Google and Spotify have considered a
partnership in which consumers would be able to use Spotify’s

while Google would foot the users’ bill. Spotify has a similar

ZABROSO
by: Nadine VandeWalker

I hope I can find the words to express

how much I really enjoyed this dining
experience at Zabroso! It happened to be
my birthday when I dined there, and I
couldn’t have asked for a lovelier or more
delicious way to celebrate.
We arrived around 6pm on a cold
February evening, and from Syracuse it was
about a 40-minute drive – and definitely,
worth every mile and minute. I have never
been to the Oneida Mansion House before,
and I was excited to check out this national
historic landmark.
We found ample parking in the rear
of the mansion where Zabroso was
located. Entering, we walked through a
large reception area, a lovely room where
many large wedding receptions are held.

Chris, our waiter, was promptly at our table to take our

order. I decided on the roasted butternut squash soup with
curried pears for $7.00. Tim then ordered the grilled hanger
steak served with yucca fries in garlic mojo for $22.00 for his
main dish and I chose the Zabroso’s shellfish bouillabaisse for
$28.00.
Chris brought out fresh, warm, crusty rolls with creamy
room temperature butter. I love when I can spread the butter
over my bread without ripping the bread because the butter
is too cold. Chris also mentioned he fills in as a bartender
here when he is needed. He was quick to tell us that Ruben is
almost famous for his homemade Sangria. When I come back
in the summer for the tour of the mansion, I will be sure to
visit the bar to get a sample of that!
My soup was amazing! It had sweet curry pear compote
drizzled on top with a hint of smokiness. The creamed
butternut squash soup base was so rich I thought it had
cream in it. I found out after dinner from the chef it did not. I
could have easily eaten two bowls of this.
Our entrees came out promptly after I finished the soup.
Now I wished I hadn’t eaten all of my soup. The shellfish
bouillabaisse was served in rich tomato pimenton based
broth. I could see the fresh herbs, pieces of garlic, onion,
Chef/Owner Ruben Lopez tomatoes, fingerling potatoes, with oversized shrimp and
scallops in a large bowl. The shrimp and scallops were
cooked perfectly in this zesty tomato pimenton sauce that
made the dish absolutely delicious. All of the flavors hit your
tongue at different times. Tim’s entrée was a large piece of
seared hanger steak covered with a parsley chimichurri sauce

of water (something you should have been already doing), decrease
your sodium intake, reduce your sugar intake, add more sculpting
exercises to improve on your “problem” areas (consider adding more
crunches, squats, and push-ups), and really focus on toning. You won’t
be able to lose a substantial amount of weight in those last two weeks
(probably not more than 2-4 lbs) so don’t kill yourself in an attempt to
do so. Focus on improving the appearance of your body by shaping it
and reducing the flab. Also, keep in mind that muscle weighs more than
fat. This means that you may not have lost as much weight on the scale
as you would have liked, but you have converted fat into muscle, which
is perfectly fine. In turn, muscle burns fat faster. This means the more
muscle you build, the more likely you are to lose weight and keep it
off. At the end of eight weeks, you will notice a leaner and more toned
body. If you have watched your diet you will have lost a few pounds of
excess flab as well. You will want to show off not hide the new body
you’ve worked so hard for. Now that doesn’t mean you should stop
there! You can decrease the intensity of your workouts, but keep up an

next spring, you won’t have to work
so hard to get ready. You’ll already be

FRESCO TORTILLAS GRILL
by: Alisha Tondro

Just a short walk away from campus and easy access from a number
of downtown businesses is Fresco Tortillas Grill. Located on Walton
Street, the grill is owned by Gary Dong.
About a year ago, when Fresco Tortillas Grill opened, the
Owner Gary Dong
area was a little more populated. With a couple of clubs that
closed down and less traffic in the area, business has slowed
a little.
However, Dong has kept the little restaurant up and going. With
yellow walls and a bright red awning announcing the name of the
restaurant and the numbers where orders can be placed, it is a sight
that just can not be missed.
With a large vase with fresh flowers and white Christmas
lights draped in the front window, the establishment welcomes in
customers. As patrons enter, they are also welcomed by a menu that
has been posted in the window.
It seems a great restaurant for repeat business. And there seems
to be quite a few patrons who agree with one customer commenting
that if it ever closed he wouldn’t know where to go for his lunch
break.
The interior of the restaurant is lightly decorated and there
are only about a dozen tables for dine-in orders. However, the
restaurant relies heavily on the take out orders that can be called in
as well as ordered online at www.campusfood.com.
Fresco Tortillas Grill delivers orders for $10 or more to the
downtown area. Most of the delivery orders are made within a five

mile radius. The grill also does catering. So
far the largest catering job it has had was
for St. Joseph’s Hospital. Although it was a
large order, catering can be done for small
parties as well.
With convenient hours between
11:00am to 10:00pm weekdays, 11:00am
to 11:00pm weekends, and 12:00pm to
10:00pm on Sunday, the grill is an open
opportunity for most office workers in the
area for a fresh lunch.
From the tortillas to the sauces and the
guacamole everything is made fresh per
order. With an average wait of three to five
minutes per order, not only is the food
fresh, but it’s also an absolute convenience
in this busy world.
“I’m pretty confident our food is better
than most in the area,” Dong boasted.
The menu offers a hearty burrito at
only $5.99 and enchiladas starting at $4.89
a piece. Customers can even order fajitas
by the pound. These start at $10.99. And
don’t forget the nachos. They start at
$3.19.

has lived in the Syracuse area for about

All this began in 1892. It seemed like out of nowhere a creature
appeared that conveyed it would serve man. Its odd appearance was far
different than ours yet it was able to communicate what it wanted and
it was able to multiply. It demanded much human care. The hypnosis
theory came about as this creature had an uncanny ability to enslave

man kept serving this creature. It would kill and man would care for the

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
COLOR IT UP

That’s my typical three-word advice on how to improve

your diet. People get stuck in ruts. Tuesday night we have
pizza. Friday night we have fish etc. etc. with the same
sides of French fries and coleslaw.
What about a little variety? We have at our disposal
produce from all over the world via the great Wegmans.
Mangoes and papaya and pineapples are available
essentially year-round. The awesome cornucopia of
fruits and vegetables rivals anything I have seen from
the individually hand polished apples in the Korean
markets in Manhattan to the gigantic open-air markets
in Bangkok. Okay in Bangkok I don’t know what was
in most of those stalls. It didn’t look edible and it didn’t
smell edible and I wasn’t going to try it… period. Yes,
I know I am the “just try it“ guy. But I do draw the
line if I can’t recognize it as food or it’s still quivering
on the plate. Yes, I have preached that you should try
something new, but that preaching stops at the pulpit
of scorpion tails or snake bits or salted flat fish from
the incredibly murky waters of that part of the world.
Try something new, sure, but don’t be an idiot.
You don’t have to get exotic to add variety. From
interviews with my patients done over decades most
of you think broccoli or asparagus is exotic. People speak about “having arteries

Let’s get back to the fungus! Mushrooms are a fantastic add-on, but
they must never be front and center. A portobello mushroom burger

some sautéed onions on top of the hamburger and you have knocked

With a full kitchen staff and six bartenders, the
kitchen is also kept a busy place. Hotch’s has a full
menu. With appetizers to pizza and everything in
between, there is something for everyone’s appetite.
The kitchen serves burgers at quarter lb. or half
lb. for $1.50 more. And at $6.75 for the cheapest
burger, any appetite can be suppressed. The menu
also gives choices such as a Philly cheese steak for
$7.25, pasta dishes starting at $7.99 for spaghetti,
and salads for those who are watching calories.
Hotch’s also does banquets. They have already
hosted four since opening six weeks ago.
There is more to do at Hotch’s than the bar and
diner. There is a small pool room, an electronic
jukebox and an electronic dartboard.
Once all of the renovations are finished, Hotch’s
will have a full wrap around bar that leads into
the large, two level dining area. There will also be
patio seating once the weather starts to change.
Eventually the kitchen will be placed to the back of
the house rather than behind the bar.
With big changes coming and a dream being
realized, Hotch’s Sport Pub and Grill is quickly The bar at Hotch’s Sports Pub and Grill

When do you give up?
What is the nature of hope, of faith, of

which The Man and The Boy, who have
