Every Sunday at 4.00 p.m. the Chaplain and Choir of the Chapel
sing a choral service. As part of the Chapels inter-denominational
foundation we have regular visiting preachers from across the
various Christian churches. There is an invitation to all to join us
in worship at the Robin Chapel.
Full details of services and of other events can be found on the
Chapel website: www.robinchapel.org.uk.
Among the hymns and carols in todays service, we commemorate
the death on 17th September of Sir David Willcocks (1919-2015).

Processional Hymn:
Of the Father's heart begotten,
Ere the world from chaos rose,
He is Alpha, from that Fountain
All that is and has been flows;
He is Omega, of all things
Yet to come the mystic Close,
Evermore and evermore.
By His word was all created
He commanded and 'twas done;
Earth and sky and boundless ocean,
Universe of three in one,
All that sees the moon's soft radiance,
All that breathes beneath the sun:
O how blest that wondrous birthday,
When the Maid the curse retrieved,
Brought to birth mankind's salvation,
By the Holy Ghost conceived;
And the Babe, the world's Redeemer,
In her loving arms received:
Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises;
Angels and Archangels, sing!
Wheresoeer ye be, ye faithful,
Let your joyous anthems ring,
Every tongue his name confessing,
Countless voices answering:
Words: Prudentius, transl. R.F. Davis
Tune: from Piae Cantiones (1582) arr. Sir David Willcocks
Bidding Prayer:
Beloved in Christ, be it this Christmas time our care and delight to
prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels; in heart and
mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to
pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.
Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of
God from the rst days of our disobedience unto the glorious
Redemption brought us by this Holy Child; and let us make this Chapel
glad with our carols of praise:
But rst let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and
goodwill over all the earth; for unity and brotherhood within the Church
he came to build, and especially in the dominions of our sovereign lady
Queen Elizabeth, within this City of Edinburgh, and in this Chapel: And
because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time
remember in his name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry
and the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn;
the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; all who know
not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his
heart of love.
Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but
upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no man
can number, whose hope was in the Word made esh, and with whom, in
this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.
These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of
heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us:
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy
kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we
forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen
The Almighty God bless us with his grace: Christ give us the joys of
everlasting life: and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the
King of Angels bring us all. Amen.
Hymn:
God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born upon this day,
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray:
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy.
From God our heavenly Father
A blessed angel came,
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same,
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name:
The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoicd much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind,
And went to Bethlehem straightway,
his blessd Babe to find:
But when to Bethlehem they came,
Whereat this Infant lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His mother Mary kneeling,
Unto the Lord did pray:
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface:
Words: English traditional carol
Tune: English traditional arr. Sir David Willcocks
In a manger laid, and wrapped I was So very poor, this was my chance
Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass,
To call my true love to my dance.
Tomorrow shall be my dancing day;
I would my true love did so chance
to see the legend of my play,
to call my true love to my dance;
Words: Traditional
Hymn:
O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
O morning stars together,
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth!
For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
Choir:
How silently, how silently,
The wondrous Gift is givn;
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His Heavn.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still,
The dear Christ enters in.
Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath
made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and
Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
Choir: Carl Rutti I wonder as I wander
I wonder as I wander out under the sky,
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die.
For poor on'ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the sky.
When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall,
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.
But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall,
And the promise of ages it then did recall.
If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,
A star in the sky or a bird on the wing.
Or all of God's Angels in heaven to sing,
He surely could have it, 'cause he was the King.
Words: John Jacob Niles
Hymn:
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born!
Fourth Lesson: Matthew 2:1-11. Wise men are led by the star to Jesus
Read by Mr Victor Mc.Laggan, Member
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod
the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his
star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had
heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And
when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people
together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they
said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the
prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among
the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule
my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men,
enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent
them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young
child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may
come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they
departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them,
till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw
the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were
come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and
fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their
treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and
myrrh.
Hymn:
In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth hall flee away when he comes to reign;
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ.
Enough for him, whom Cherubim worship night and day,
A breast full of milk and a manger full of hay.
Enough for him, whom angels fall down before,,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.
What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give him Give my heart.
Words: Christina Rossetti
Tune: Cranham (Gustav Holst)

Fifth Lesson: John 1:1-14 The Incarnation of the Word of God
Read by The Chaplain
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were
made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in
darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent
from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear
witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not
that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true
light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the
world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He
came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to
them that believe on his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the
will of the esh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was
made esh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of
the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Hymn:
O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him,
Born the King of angels:
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
God of God,
Light of Light,
Lo, he abhors not the Virgin's womb;
Very God,
Begotten, not created:
Child, for us sinners
Poor and in the manger,
Fain we embrace thee with awe and love;
Who would not love thee,
Loving us so dearly?
Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above:
Glory to God
In the highest:
Words: tr. F. Oakeley, W.T. Brooke and others
